I would argue Come and The Gold Experience are part of his classic era anyway.

Agreed. I feel like over time people (at least on the Org) have stretched his classic era from 1980-1988 to 1980-1995. And I would agree with that.

I don't. Everything was a mess in those days. Releasing singles without videos (Letitgo), videos without singles (Dolphin), having his greatest hit in years and then a new album without it (Come), touring behind an album that wasn't out yet (Gold) and then promoting yet another album (Exodus). It could have been part of his classic era because the music was good enough, but his obsession with record companies ruined it. But, with Prince it's all or nothing. Even when he screws up, he's interesting.

TGE. He had a lot of publicity around that time because of the name change and it was also pretty sucessful due to TMBGITW

It should have been more sucessful because there was great music from late 93-94...

However interms of commercial success, as recalled in Alex Hans and Per Nilsens books... TGE album was a very moderate underwhelming success just going GOLD and sold just a little more than the dissapointing commercial success of COME... Also the European tour was not a huge success, many shows did not sell out and had to cut their whole stage props down throughout the shows to save cost.

Playing songs from an album that no one except diehard fans have heared, is not going to sell out arenas. It worked as a club tour, but not in the big venues. Reviews were also pretty negative. And TGE came out more than half a year after the tour and more than a year after Most Beautiful Girl was a hit, so no one cared about it anymore.

I hear what you're saying, but I only care about the music. In that sense, I think the classic era goes up to 1995.

COME?

Really?

Prince must me laughing at that. He certainly didn't intend it as a classic album.

To me it's an album full of...album tracks. Nothing strong enough to be a single. Not even Letitgo.

I know lots os people like that album version of Come, but I thought the more guitar-orientated version which segued into a cowbell-less Endorphin Machine then into Space was a much better proposition.

It's not that any of it's bad, just... Meh.

I WILL say in Comes' favour that in the context of the WB battle, it's fairly unique in showing Prince at a low-point ("Solo", "Dark" "Papa")

Nah... AOA and PE are another era all together. Lets call it WB 2.0, which I think has come to an end already.

I agree, the original stripped down monotonous version of Come was much better. Imagine being in a concert hall in 1993 waiting for the encores, which you think will be 199 like on the last tour. Then Prince does a speech about people thinking he makes too much music and then says:" How you gonna stop the music when the voice says COME!" and then rips into this song, followed by Endorphinmachine and Peach, all new. headbang

I did think the question is too limiting. i thought the consensus was Prince's classic era included the prince album.

Many of Prince's albums could have been part of the classic era. I still think the Hits albums was a mistake and ended Prince's streak of hits. Prince benefittted by always being in public

consciousness so the 1993 break hurt.

That said in response to thequestion that was posed: D&P, prince< Gold, Rave, High, Musicology, Planet Earth, Lotus Flower, Artifical Age could have been classic era albums.

Also other combinations of the songs into other possible albums could have made for more classic albums which we have all played with for years creating better albums tracklists than Prince has done, or we think we have (Sorry - if Prince is on here lurking somewhere smile ).

The Classic Era, to me, ends with The Gold Experience. I think by then, he had said everything he was ever going to say, and honestly I can't imagine living without any of these albums. Even the low points (Graffiti Bridge movie, eg) were part of his story.

.

Imagine if Prince had retired after TGE? 17 albums and quite a legacy, with a level of musical quality that was sustained almost throughout the entire run.

.

Everything after -- C&D, OF4S, Emancipation, NPS, etc. never quite achieved the same level.

It's odd but I remember prince announcing a retirement in 1993? And I was so excited. Thinking at the time it was the ultimate declaration of genius. I've loved a lot of music since but part of me still wishes he had done it

^He said that, but of course he didn't mean it. It was just the first step in trying to get out of that contract.

The fans here over rated TGE so much... I'm glad to see how many more people now realizes how outdated, plastic and corny the album as a WHOLE sounds today, regardless of some amazing tracks on that album.

It's a flawed album for sure, but it's is the most daring Prince album of the 90's. Daring, yet accesible and enjoyable. Which is a hallmark of 80's Prince. Whereas most of his 90's albums sound condescending in his seeking of a younger audience.

To us late-comers unpredictable promotion and avalanche of music coming from all directions was classic Prince. That's what made him stand out, special and unique. The arrogant, foul-mouthed, angry, cool, untouchable, multi-talented symbol. That was 'wow'. That was classic. razz

Not to say that 'I' am right and 'you' are wrong - but that we all have our truths and experiences.

I happen to think that TGE is a 95% flawless album. Such a big step up from the nice, but underwritten Come.

AOA and PE (PE is the more 'fun' album, IMO) are good albums, but almost nothing on them screams 'knockout hit'.
