Here are classified subliminal images that went through the wrecka stow owners minds,
when the Warner Rep. presented them The Great Adventures Of Flower Power Skipper for the first time:

Such a disappointment for you that he is not an American.

Yet still the same idea stands:

You mean "Why were 1988 people so upset" ?

The way I see it, the "Explicit lyrics" stickers didn't turn into a commercial argument right away.
At first, they were a true warning, backed up by Tipper Gore's campaign, for midwest families coming in to buy the latest Disney VHS or Betacam or whatever.

An era where The Max of hottiness was this kind of stuff, ruling the charts supreme :

All this stuff is sexy as your buttered toast fallen on the wrong side, when you pick it up and there's one greasy, long hair and some kitchen dirt as frosting.
Breakfast will wait.

This musical goo should be erased from all magnetic tapes and hard drives on earth, its authors militarily brainwashed, so not to give further reason for the machines to annihilate us when the singularity kicks in.

In Europe, as nudity is litterally part of THE culture (wanna see naked bodies? Enter the nearest museum, and there are quite a few), Skipper In Its 1988 Prime was seen as fun. Depeche Mode, The Communards, Soft Cell, Erasure, Culture Club, Wham! and countless others were already educating through the charts the european kids minds with diversity, in subtle, and not so subtle ways.

Knowing how desperately hetero Skipper was, I was very proud of displaying my vynil in the subway, and not only because of my natural Prince proselytism, or unveiling an early and not fully realized LGBT sympathy feeling (man, I was only sixteen — but I guess that's no excuse).

I was proud because the stuff was beautiful AND hot (From the bushy eyebrows to the female genitals superimposed on an orchid leaf — see above, and look for yourself on the cover, I didn't photoshopped shit). And the work from a french, so there (even though I have no french blood running through my veins, but tomorrow never knows).
Believe me, when you're in a crowd with a 30x30 cm, it is no pathetic CD.
It's like you're carrying a poster that screams Sex.
Just because the androgyny of the aerograph work (no Photoshop, my friend).

The very fact you question a spectator about someone's sexuality
puts him in a situation where (s)he has to define his own intimate persona.
It forces you to position yourself, because here's a depiction of a being
that appears to be part of both sides, thus somewhat treathening.
This is as ancient as Michelangelo, and art doesn't get more sociological than that.
This almost political role art can have was perfectly exposed here.

Mondino is a close friend to Jean-Paul Gaultier.
Would Madonna be a complete Madonna without the golden-plated nipples from "Open Your Heart", the unexisisting bras from the Cannes festival, and the Pershing-missile-breasts from the Blond Ambition tour ephebes ?

Living in France in the second half of the eighties (or should I say, in Paris) was really exciting, I don't know if coke is to blame, but all creatives were given the green flag, and so graphical oddities were all around, in commercials, fashion, pop, a time where the wealth of the Reagan years flowed over Europe's intelligentsia and creative budgets.

Let me state that a lot of the aforementioned goo was also produced, which confirms that some (wo)men are to be kept away from the Spice, or any other "Travelling Without Moving" substances.

The Lovesexy artwork is borrowing a great deal from The Renaissance, so in Europe you would look first at the aesthetics of it, the subject being somewhat mundane (a naked man).

In America, after 8 years of Ronald McDollar's puritanism, white teeth and hair conditioners, where was taste and culture to be found except for a very little happy few, chased away from the heart of the country to the point they're forced to live on the coasts?

The "Hey, I'm a Queer" poster may be OK for european record stores,
it's another story when moms and daughters come in to buy Tiffany's LP.
"Mom? What is with the Lady with a mustache?"

Not all people in 1988 were the same.

Neither are they now.

Some countries behave diffierently than others.

Even in 1988 nudity had a long history and painting the world as a place where there was no place for this is twisiting the facts a bit.

Back then it was about marketability.

And the P album cover was less marketable.

Not because anything was showing.

More because of the false nudity response and the NON-comprehension of the message of the album which combines with the album cover.

The flower thing is a non argument. Did people stop smelling flowers up close after the Lovesexy album?

One strange thing I noticed, but I may be mistaken, is that you can identify pics like this one, where you clearly see Prince all confident and ballsy.

This seems more like a pose he would take with someone he feels comfortable with, like Jeff Katz or another official photographer. Judging by the style, it's not Mondino.

The John Lennon & Yoko Ono nude album cover was covered in brown paper when it was sold in stores.

Good point. But did that help or hurt sales? Also, Two Virgins wasn't homoerotic and andogynous in the way that Lovesexy was. It was a man and a woman on the cover and evoked the Garden of Eden more than anything. The Lovesexy period was pretty much Prince at his "most gay" or whatever it was that people were worrying about. I was open minded about this sort thing way back in in 1988 and I still found some of the images from that era rather jarring in ways that challenged me and my way of thinking. In retrospect, it was a good thing.

.

Also remember that Prince was on the radar back then. He was still VERY popular and mainstream and was one of the "nasty ones", along with Madonna and a lot of metal acts, a charge brought forth by the PMRC and the whole record labeling "Parental Advisory" thing, so this sexually charged image didn't appear out of whole cloth or in any sort of vaccum.

.

Of all of the artists that came under scrutiny for expressing sexuality, at the time, Prince was the most gender bending and challenging for that era, at least amongst the mainstream. I know for a FACT that this cover alone cost him sales because insecure friends of mine couldn't stand to be caught dead owning it and the music wasn't enough on par with SOTT or Purple Rain to warrant the "risk".

.

Aside, and unrelated to the cover, this was also the first time Prince really truly "got weird" about things (pulling The Black Album, releasing the CD as one track, battling the record companies, etc.)

Didn't have any hesitation or embarrassment buying
Lovesexy. Did feel a little embarrassed when I
bought George Michael's cassette single for I Want
Your Sex. And of course the sales clerk did not
disappoint and made some wise ass remark.

I believe Jeff Katz did take this, there are 1 or 2 others (not as good as this) floating around, sorta looks like the Parade photoshoot with the hand poses.

This one Prince was proud of and released, it reminds me of his 1978/80 Prince-Dirty Mind look

Ugh.

If that is your argument to stop smelling flowers up close then you are the type of people I suspect to find mostly on that one continent.

I propose a general habit and you make it very very specific in an attempt to find a reason.

So my question is: did you persist and change your habits?

I was talking about the habit of smelling flowers up close.

Any reasonably sane person has learned that flowers are the genitalia they are supposed to be.

We do not need any Lovesexy cover references to beautify that situation.

I was talking about smelling flowers up close in general.

You sketch a different very much more specific situation.

If the world was made of "reasonably sane persons", I think you'd get yo ass kicked something severe every time you give a bunch of flowers to a lady.

"We do not need"? Who's "we"?

Man, you must have been smoking the flowers.

Taken from Reply #8, from this org thread :

PHOTOGRAPHY
Mondino shot one roll of Kodak Ektachrome film using a Hasselblad camera. Later that day he met Prince at his hotel and showed him the contact sheets. Prince chose one shot for the album cover, and the rest were destroyed.

... If this is true, that means the roll was made of Prince striking the Lovesexy pose naked. And therefore these "Glamo-Retro Dirty Mind Revisited" shots are from a different session.

For all the newbies and those who haven´t seen this one before....it´s the alternate album cover for Lovesexy.

I think the portrait looks slightly different than what was later used for the album cover. So I wonder if ALL the negatives were really destroyed, because this is most likely from the same session.

He probably has the whole session taking dust somewhere in The Vault.

Seeing the alternative cover, I can't help but thinking of a reboot of the eponym 1979 album.

Man, when I think about the other side of "Prince" the album, the flying pegasus... I mean thank God for the musician. If Prince didn't have any talent, he would surely be one heck of a weirdo.
