Good question. Prince has recieved a LOT of criticism for having rappers on his album, but really, he's been doing it like forever. I nominate Irresistable Bitch.

There is no such thing, and since you are widely considered the best Musician on Prince.org, you should know that.

Until I see your skillz on the spoons, you're just a wanna-be chasing me, Beau Hall and TheChronic.

EDIT - Sorry, it was "TheChronic". How could I possibly screw up the name of the man that was not just too fine but THREE FINE, and who went to the University of Michigan (very impressive!)?

Not to mention the guy that announced his return to Beaumont, Texas by writing it on the walls inside Porta-Potties.

My bad!

Prince can speak-sing masterfully like on Irresistable Bitch or even the parts done by others in Lady Cab Driver, but when it comes to actual rap -- rythming n rhyming, that musicality you give to speech without singing, he's been... well it's his version of rap, and it sounds hmm ok on a few songs like 18 and Over but you're never going to convince a serious hip hop freakthat he's inspired by the art form as it's practised. But at the same time, he's great at speaking into a mike, his concept of that predates rap and that's the problem.

U Know
Silicon

those are the only two times that i heard P rap, where he doesnt embarrass himself or the genre...like Aerogram said, theres plenty examples of Prince doing a spoken word/chant type delivery "Sexuality", "Sign O The Times","Lady Cab Driver", "Arrogance" etc...but just spittin pure bars, he usually sounded awkward, with an outdated flow..."U Know" broke that mold, and is the first time P sounded current while rapping

A problem arised circa D&P.

Suddenly Prince thought he had found a style by rapping right on the quarter notes.
And it sounds like amateurs night. Old School gone bad, and not in a good way.
Dead On It is an exception, the only good attempt at it.
And Days Of Wild.

But of course, rapping is about making your syllabes flow through the quarter notes.
It's Jazz.

Whatever freedom Prince has with the bass, the guitar, or the keyboards, he's unable to genuinely replicate it with his voice.

Prince worked his voice against Stevie Wonder, Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, guys, like Michael,
in absolute control of their voice. To the point where emotion flows from within (The Beautiful Ones).

You get something, you lose something. Prince is no 2Pac.
Prince polishes himself a lot before going out in the world. Not Snoop.

What he does on Hardrocklover's verses is interesting. I could qualify it as somewhat rap.
He must have laid an ear on FKA Twigs for sure.

Irresistible Bitch, for all its glory, is more sung talk-over than rap... But it has a jazz quality.
And you get the NYC rap feel, oddly enough, because of the drums: there's no Linn!

But the groove is all Prince's, stripped down to the bone.

I think Big Life City Remix is the one.
That's Prince the comedian, and this is par with Dead On It. Here Prince's talent doesn't have to scream (hint, hint).
It's tongue-in-cheek and has humorous self-deprecation (disguised as self-grandeur, as always).

Does Strange but True qualify as rap?

Wonderful Ass' bridge sounds like rap to me, with all those repetitive ryhmes in "ate"...

So it's not an easy question.

Is "Comeonbabycomeon, let-me-feel-U-up, comeonbabycomeon — [Eric's Sax]", rap?

Will Prince ever cease to amaze us? biggrin

In short, Skipper can't rap. But he can be surprising trying.

Ahhh, but Face Down is in a category of its own.

I recently discovered that lounge-sounding G-Funk remix, and it blew me off.
The guy re-recorded the whole song from scratch, and this version is one of his best vocal performances, lead and background.

The video is one of the rare rewatchable Prince vids.
