It's called sampling. Prince has done it many times. Many people have also sampled him. Big deal.

From the same album, Tick Tick Bang has the drums from Jimi Hendrix's Little Miss Lover.

The Release It drums aren't sample. They've be replayed. Still the same beat, though.

I thought this was going to be about Schoolyard, where Prince mentions this tune.

4 years I considered this beat one of P's best beats ever, so of course when I learned it had been sampled (or replayed) I was heavily disappointed. Then I realized that it doesn't matter because in the end artistic creativity isn't just about creating elements but also putting them together. P created a killer track by using this borrowed beat with the elements he created and added to it, the song is most likely way funkier that way than it could have been if P had tried to create another beat to it.

Sure he could have credited the sample/interpolation but at the time it was still fairly common to NOT credit samples.

Also while I understand the disappointment of the OP (reflecting mine at the time), I find it so totally ridiculous to say "another rip-off" when talking about a man who's composed more than 1000 songs and only occasionally borrows or samples something from someone else's composition. It's not like P's catalogue is made of rip-offs...
