Let's Discuss High - The Chocolate Invasion - The Slaughterhouse!

Let's discuss the tracks Prince recorded for High, The Chocolate Invasion, and The Slaughterhouse (using the Princevault track list for High). This was an odd time in the world of Prince, if you ask me. I remember the hype on the Org when High was rumored...but then the disappointment when people heard the songs and were let down. Then the album never materialized. I was okay with that because he release TRC instead, which I think is a masterpiece.

Supercute: This is a great pop tune. Simple, straightforward, effective. The sound effects are corny though.

Underneath the Cream: Fuck yeah. Great song. I started a thread about it the other day to show my appreciation.

Golden Parachute: Not the worst song ever, but nothing special. Undercooked.

When Will We Be Paid?: Great song. Passionate. Blistering. Nice work.

The Daisy Chain: Terrible. Just awful.

Gamillah: Zzz...zzz...zzz...oh, uh, what?

High: Wow, what a stinker! This would have been his absolute worst title track.

My Medallion: Cheesy, but for some reason I like it.

U Make My Sun Shine: Pleasant. A little unexceptional.

When Eye Lay My Hands On U: Excellent. I love it.

Judas Smile: Much ado about nothing.

Sexmesexmenot: Lame.

Vavoom: Good song. It SMOKED live. Wow.

The Dance: Good, but I like the 3121 version better.

Silicon: I really like this one. Cool beat. But a little underdone.

S&M Groove: Kind of fun. But forgettable.

Y Should Eye Do That When Eye Can Do This?: No, don't do any of this. Or that. It all sucks. Don't do anything, please. I saw him perform this one at Paisley and it was directionless, pointless bragging.

Hypnoparadise: Kind of cool. I like it.

Props 'N Pounds: My least favorite Prince song. Not even Purple and Gold has a fucking Kurt Loder sample. This is Prince at his most desperate and clueless.

Northside: Boring but pleasant.

Peace: Funky. Fuck yeah.

2045: Radical Man: There's nothing radical about this crap.

There were some other songs around this time that aren't on he track listings. Wasn't there some boring instrumental called Habibi?

Excuse the typos. I was writing quickly.

Respectfully disagree re:High as title track. I loved it the first time I heard it and still do. One of his best.
High album would have been a classic if dropped officially and promoted. Still so happy I have these tracks from NPGMC tho, they all rock!

I don't really care for Vavoom all that much, although it has some cool guitar harmonies weaving in and out. Judas Smile and Silicon are kind of odd, but I like them...I just have to be in the mood to give them a spin.

--

I absolutely LOVE all of the rest, especially "Sexmesexmenot" and "Y Should Eye Do That When Eye Can Do This." It baffles me how anyone can hear those two in particular and not be floored, the bragging and slam against "Sister" and "Dirty Mind" notwithstanding.

Hi-yo Silver, it's The Bone Ranger!

Golden Parachute and Underneath the Cream do bore me a little. I like P talking in the beginning of underneath though. That's the only good part of that song.

Yes, let's!

  1. Supercute: I really like this one. One of Prince's best choruses IMO. That little staccato closed hi hat sound used to annoy the fuck out of me, though.
  2. Underneath the Cream: We just talked about this one. I like the Hawaiian keyboard line, and the dreamy aspect of it. One of the last times Prince got dirty? "Come in2 this wet dream - eternal."
  3. Golden Parachute: Glorified background music. Doesn't belong on an album.
  4. When Will We Be Paid?: Heard this for the first time live at Paisley, and I didn't love it. Hearing a multimillionaire whine about being paid just left a bad taste in my mouth. And this was the last song of the set, after which he promptly stormed off the stage all pouty. That didn't help my impression of the song much either. That said, I respect this song, and think the vocal is great, but I don't love it and rarely listen to it.
  5. The Daisy Chain: I used to kind of like this one but it wore thin quickly, and hasn't aged well. The beat and bass are kinda cool, I guess.
  6. Gamillah: I think this is a rather nice instrumental that goes somewhere interesting by the end. Is this what he was working on in the studio footage from the Rave DVD?
  7. High: I know it's corny AF, but I don't care. It's kind of a guilty pleasure at this point. I love the super up-front rhythm guitar, and the vocal delivery. I remember during TRC Celebration he talked about sending this one over to KDWB but they wouldn't play it, asking, "How can a dope song like 'High' not get on the radio?" Ummm....
  8. My Medallion: I love the beat, and think the story is kind of charming. But the lazy refrain that just repeats itself over and over kind of makes me hate it.
  9. U Make My Sun Shine: I still really love this one. Great love song that sounds like a gospel song, with fine additions from Angie Stone, Millenia, and even Kip adds a little something nice.
  10. When Eye Lay My Hands On U: I flipped the fuck out the first time I heard this song, and played it all night long, refusing to go to bed. For some reason I now skip it every time it comes on. I don't know why. This is the last song I remember Bart saying something positive about back in the alt.music.prince days. Fun fact. lol
  11. Judas Smile: I actually like the song a lot, but I feel like the production is missing something. Maybe it's the drums that sound a little bland for me. I think the last half is more interesting than the first.
  12. Sexmesexmenot: I think this one is funky as hell on a loud system. There's the is super deep bass sound that you can't hear at all without good speakers.
  13. Vavoom: Prince talked this one up on his website quite a bit, calling it a "straight up hit single." I was a little underwhelmed. It's kinda fun I guess, but probably better live.
  14. The Dance: I really like the bass line on this version, and miss it on the 3121 version. This one is definitely inferior to the 3121, though. It's boring without Prince's psycho caterwauling at the end. I feel like this one might have been slated for the Madrid 2 Chicago album.
  15. Silicon: The lyrics are interesting, but are better on the Adam & Eve remix of TGRES. I think it needed more interesting music.
  16. S&M Groove: Kinda funky, but sort of an inferior Come On with a rhythm guitar line. I remember when a bit of this streamed on his website at the time along with Funkradio, which I would really love to hear someday.
  17. Y Should Eye Do That When Eye Can Do This?: I love the beat, and the horn parts are sick. The lyrics and delivery are dreadful.
  18. Hypnoparadise: This could have been so much cooler with edgier production. It sounded super dated then, and has aged even worse.
  19. Props 'N Pounds: I can't believe this made an album. I like the Linn and the guitar, I guess? And the bass is funky. It could have so much better without the awful lyrics. Remember when he was constantly rambling about the prefixes and suffixes of words, like it was revolutionary or even interesting? rolleyes
  20. Northside: This one is funky as hell live, and desperately needs better drums on the studio version. The bass is crazy funky before the breakdown. Camille on background vocals.
  21. Peace: Funky jam. I have to edit out the "comedy" bits with Kip and Johnnie, though. And Larry's vocal gives me the creeps.
  22. 2045: Radical Man: Too lightweight and repetitive to be radical. Camille can't even save it.

Schlomo, I think we were at many of the same Paisley shows in 1999-2001 or so. We've discussed it before, but I'll bring it up again because I think it's cool. Do you remember when Prince played Y Should Eye Do That for the first time? Kind of an underwhelming show in the Love4OneAnother room, with Geneva prancing around? I just thought Prince was fucking around on his keys. I never imagined it was an actual song he was performing! It seemed so...empty. lol

I don't know if I ever told you this, but I remember you in line, with a girl, introducing yourself to someone else. You asked them if they were on the org and said your screen name was KingSausage, which compelled me to look at you. Shorter (than me anyway) with a slender frame and a buzz cut?

Yep. That was me! Hahaha. Fortunately I lost the buzz cut. Y should my hair do that when it can do this? (Also, that was before I got married, so I'm glad someone witnessed me talking to a girl.)

Very rarely listen to these albums now. Only couple of decent tracks amongst all the plastic uninspired stinkers. Supercute, Vavoom and When I Lay My Hands On U are unlucky to be in such bad company.

I used to think these songs were the armpit or sweaty asshole of Prince's catalog. But they're way better on average than MPLSound or Planet Earth. I think they're better on average than NPS too, though nothing here can rival Come On.

I do like Rave (either version) way more than these songs though.

Weird time to be a Prince fan, for sure. As these songs were individually released to fans monthly as per of the NPGMC, they were exciting to me. There aren't any masterpieces here, but I definitely got the sense that there was an abandoned project that Prince decided to share with us. And that first year of the club was so promising with the "Ahdio" shows and individual tracks no one had heard before.
.
Then most of the songs from year 1 were compiled into these albums. I was a little ticked off. Same songs for the most part, some slightly alternate / extended versions so it was compelling to drop money for them, but most songs crapped all over by censoring. Made me very glad to have the originals.
.
Some of the censoring seems unnecessary, too, even for Prince. . The word "damn" is backmasked in SM Groove and we've heard "hell" and "damn" out of his mouth since then.
.
While there's nothing overly special on these compilations other than an apparent requirement to use car sound effects on every song (how many engine starts and horn beeps are there here?!?), the highlights make them fun. I actually really like Sexmesexmenot - the extended ending on the album version was really killer I thought. Vavoom - Prince was probably right about. Could have been a radio hit with a decent video. Look at how well Cream did.
.
Lowlights are really, really low. Like Planet Earth low for me. Props N Pounds is just scraping-the-bottom-of-the-purple-barrel awful. I'm with King Sausage on Y Should I Do This - just....no. Y Would Anyone Listen 2 That?
.
Overall, it felt like the Vault doors were opening a little back then. 3 years removed from Crystal Ball, we got to hear songs that were otherwise going to never be heard. For that, I appreciate both albums.
.
Sorely missing from these: Van Gogh, Jukebox With A Heartbeat. I think he should have put one on each album. At the very least, the ratio of engine and car horn effects per song would have been reduced.

Van Gogh! Yes, I new I forgot something. That's a good one.

I've never even heard Jukeboz With A Heartbeat. Damn.

Has anyone ever detailed which songs were censored, extended, or otherwise changed from the Ahdio shows to the eventual Chocolate/Slaughterhouse releases? I feel like I've only ever heard censored versions.

I missed out on most of these tracks back in the day. I had next to no disposable income, so I passed on joining the NPGMC. I only heard these songs on random CDs friends sent me, most of which stopped working years ago.

I think these are very under rated projects. Way better (on average) than NPS or Rave or even Musicology or Planet Earth. I wish this stuff would come out in lossless, uncensored quality, preferrably on CD (or VINYL!!).

I love: When Eye Lay My Hands On U, Judas Smile, Sexme Sexmenot, High, U Make My Sun Shine, S&M Groove, Props N Pounds, 2045 Radical Man, The Daisy Chain

I like: Supercute, Gamillah, Silicon, Why Should I Do That, Golden Parachute, Northside, Peace

The rest I'm "Meh": Underneath The Cream, Vavoom, The Dance, Hypnoparadise

Lots of good stuff here. It's also fun to see how different our tastes can be. It seems every song has it's fans... COOL!

Jukebox With A Heartbeat was buried in an Ahdio Show, never released as a stand-alone track. I edited it out as a single track but it's marred by the Ahdio Show's crummy 128kbps MP3 bitrate.

I'm pretty certain the original tracks were made available monthly as your choice of 128 Kbps or 256 Kbps MP3 files. (I remember downloading the lower bitrate song so I could get it quickly, then letting the higher quality files download later because it was not a fast process back then with a dialup connection at home).

The two compilation albums we are discussing here were released as awful rights-protected WMA files. To my ears, the 256 Kbps MP3 files sound better (and those are the ones not censored, but some tracks are shorter than the compilation versions).
