BTW I've read b4 that P reportedly claimed he wasn't so happy with Parade (an unusual thing for him to say, he's usually his biggest fan) but I could never find out what he said exactly and in which interview, to the point where I wonder if it's a urban legend or what. Does anyone have the exact quote?

Surprising, because in a rehearsal of Girls & Boys Prince says he's "so glad someone else didn't put out this record. I'd be scared to death!"

Sounded very confident and satisfied with Parade.

Gotta go with Parade. ATWIAD is bookended by 2 songs that I'm rarely in the mood to listen to. I can play Parade all the way through and enjoy every note.

I vote ATWIAD. Parade is an overrated album...the songs work well in the context of the Under the Cherry Moon movie, but as an album, it just doesn't work for me. "I Wonder U" and "Venus de Milo" are horrible songs. If they were replaced by " heart Or $" and "Alexa de Paris," respectively, the album would be better.

Parade.

I actually wasn't too impressed with ATWIAD.A few cool songs but much of that album bored me.

Parade has great songs like "Kiss","Girls & Boys" and "Anotherloverholenyohead" music I even like "Do U Lie".

The exact quote was...

"Parade was a disaster.Outside of "Kiss",there's nothing on it that I'm particularly proud of.I think I recorded it too soon after 'Around The World In A Day' and I just didn't have enough good songs ready.I'm not gonna make that mistake again"

I can't recall exactly where he said it...I think it might be the 1988 Musician magazine cover story? Can someone pull out their copy and check?

I think that was Prince trying to distance himself from the Revolution, and downgrade their contributions.

He has played "Girls & Boys", "Mountains", "Anotherloverholeinyohead", and "Sometimes it Snows In April" live multiple times, particularly since 2000. That's because they're good.

The same cannot be said for many tracks to appear on albums since 2000.
He wishes he could make an album of that quality now.

As to the question of the post: my answer is "Parade" unquestionably. It is a work of art and is timeless.

"ATWIAD" is a lesser realized, flawed, but creative album. Having said that--I wish he had another ATWIAD in him.

I'd defintely go with Parade. It's a brilliant album and could've been even better with the inclusion of Old Friends 4 Sale, the instrumental version of An Honest Man, Alexis de Paris and Love or $. As is, it's still one of my favorites.

I agree. Old Friends 4 Sale would've sealed the deal on this album, wouldve made it amazing.

Can u believe Love or $ won the razzie for worst song in a movie?

Thx smile It's a stunning thing to say all things considered: Parade might be, of all his early albums, the one that best stood the test of time and one of his most ambitious artistic statements, and I guess it's universally acclaimed today. Of course P couldn't know that at the time but still... eek eek eek

For me the big album of the 80 are purple rain and sott. 1999 has 4 great songs(little red, 1999, dmsr, somerhing in the water) the rest is very boring because all tracks are way too long (i never liked that album). Lovesexy has 3 great songs. The same with batmam...i rather like records like lovesymbol, come, musicology, 3121, gold, great pop/funk/rocksongs
1999 is "boring" and Lovesexy has 3 great songs, and musicology and 3121 are better? Surely there's a forum rule against posting this along with links to bootlegs or videos of torturing kittens.

1999 gets extremly boring, because most songs are about 7-9 min. and at one point they feel like a loop...sorry, not my cup of tea.

Lovesexy: i dont need i know, Glam slam, positivity, dance on....they are ok, but i could live without them. nothing special about it.

As i already said, lovesexy, parade might b masterpieces, but only here in this little prince-world.

I dont hardly ever shout this out cuz its like blasphemy around here, but I dislike 1999, or dont like it much at least...for similar reasons. The songs, for me, meander around too much. The loop, and the meat of the songs, dont change too much in relation to how long they are. I rarely listen to it and corvette only makes my usual playlists. I do enjoy 1999, cab driver, the b side irresistible bitch....but the rest I regularly and happily skip.

"in the 80s Prince gave us tons of shit songs"

and also:

"Prince was not relevant anymore in 1991"...

eek lol

May I ask Misiu, what do you like then, apart from SOTT & PR....???

Sorry Misiu, what you write comes off like nuts... nuts

I mean no offense, its ok to have different opinions, but... if you don't like most of the 80's albums 1980-1988 and if you think he is done and not relevant post 1991 - what is there to enjoy??

I think 1999 is an undeniable classic. A masterpiece. An amazing groundbreaking album. That being said, it's the album I listen to the least out of any of Prince's classic 80's output. Why? The length of the songs. I love every song on the album except for Free. But they're so damn long that it lessens my willingness to just play the whole album casually. So I can see where you're coming from.
