Once and for all can we agree that EVERY version of "We Can Funk" is GOOD

It's just a great song. Period. With or without P-Funk, with or without hornss, slowed down with Miko, stripped down with Andy. I think I've listened to every version over the past 3 days.

music Just enjoy it!

I really want to hear the 1982 version. I recall a clip that was posted on youtube long ago and I have never heard it again. Peronally, my favorite version is the one on Graffitti Bridge - it just has so much energy. I do like the other versions though. I just need to get my hands on the 1982 version - I almost lost my shit when I heard that clip.

See, I knew about MM from older threads about this song. I haven't heard it still, but know it's GOT to be good like all the other verisons I've heard.

From 1982 all the way to Andy's version even Prince knows that this song is the shit, just a great melody, lyrics, hook, overall concept that works so many differnet ways!

Has the 82 version leaked? I've always been confused by this track's history. Heading off to Princevault to read about it...

LOL. But that's true though. Still, I literally listened to at least 5 versions of this song in the past 2 days. A few years ago I apporached Andy's "Oui Can Love" with a GTFOHWTBS attitude. But as soon as the track came on I was like music "Damn it, I shall not hate on this track".

my fav version is the GB version but much longer without George Clinton and Co. peeing all over it! you can hear prince's vocals much clearer. although I do like the final released version aswell. I also like the 'Miko' version.

The so-called '1982' version of 'We Can Funk' is more than likely actually from the first half of 1983, prior to commencement of serious work on the Purple Rain project, and from approximately the same time as the circulating vocal 'Possessed' and 'Extralovable' and the bootlegger-named 'Wet Dream Cousin'. It contains the initial tracks on which the version ending up on Graffiti Bridge is ultimately based.

.

It was supposedly worked on further on New Year's Eve, 1983, and the following day, in a studio jam session with multiple members of the Colemans and Melvoins. If this is true, I speculate that the circulating leaked '10:24+' length version might contain a small number of those additional tracks added at that session (as well as more unused Clinton sessions tracksl the extended length of this leak having nothing specifically to do with the added input from either party. It appears to be an early 'Cinderella Session' work in progress overdubbing the tapes as they last existed before George Clinton involvement).

.

It was worked on further throughout various unknown recording dates from 1984 through Summer 1986. 'We Can Fu*k' didn't become the less explicitly titled 'We Can Funk' until sometime in 1986 or later.

.

It was brought out again for additional work for George Clinton's 'Cinderella Theory' album sometime in 1988 or early 1989. George Clinton presented P with demos described by his management as being rather long-in-the-tooth production-wise; perhaps at the earlier stages of work or planning on the album, it was considered using or reworking some of that demo material, and this decidedly early-80s Prince track would have been right at home as a contribution to the general sound of the album.

.

I believe 'Moral Majority' to be entirely separate outtake, one with very little documentation, whose working title happened to appear on the same label for a studio tape cannister that work on 'We Can Fu*k' also appeared, as discovered by Prince documentarians. It has been rumored to possibly be either an instrumental, or a demo recorded for an unrealized second Vanity 6 album, with 'Moral Majority' being only a tentative title for the demo.

.

The version on Graffiti Bridge employs elements from all of these various stages of recording and revising, and adds some new ones (the electric guitar line, in particular, and the 'safe' overdub before 'sex', for instance).

.

Funny enough, today I finally heard the P-Funk version, with George's and Garry Shider's vocals before Prince comes back in for the second part. I thought damn this would have been GREAT if it had been released just like this on George Clinton's album.

Every version is good, but my fave is and always will be the released GB version. Of all the years work that went into the track, this is the version that finally tested positive for the funk!

Agreed. Whether it's that nasty throbbing 1986 version or the slick 1990 version, I love them all. Never understood the need for the "pee" line in '90, though.

I haven't enjoyed any of the versions I've heard. I don't actively dislike it either; it just doesn't do anything for me.

Given that everyone else on this website loves it, I have to conclude that there's something terribly wrong with me.

Has to be as someone from the song noted that they were in a room screaming "moral majority" into a microphone during the session with the girls. Not sure if it was Fink or Dez or somebody that said that.

I agree that The released version seems like a cut from all the sessions except for GC's standalone take on it. Prince pretty much kept all his vocals the last half from the 1982 version with some added screams in the background. Even the synths are the same.
