I think Housequake is awesome. It's a perfect example of stripping something down to the basic elements and STILL having it whoop ass. If you actually listen, it's very bare. It has a very sparse, (but funky drum pattern) a bass that does very little, (but funky as hell) and a little guitar. On top of that you've got vocals, two horns, and a keyboard. Also, the Fairlight doing some orchestra hits here and there.

Now is great, too. It's full of goodness. I prefer the minimal approach. I like HQ on the album MORE than the live version, though the live version is great. When it comes to Now, I prefer the live versions by far. The album verison is too cluttered and leaves too much cool stuff buried. It's not buried in the cool let's-have-a-listening-adventure-and-try-to-find-all-the-hidden-bass-licks way, either.

And that's my two bloody cents.

Don't get me wrong - I love Housequake. But a great dance song it ain't.

I'm in your camp. Was suprised as all hell it was somewhat of a mainstream hit. That said its a timeless track and unique in the Prince catalog but way better live.

I feel similarly. Housequake, 1+1+1=3, the gold standard, etc....all silly dance tunes that star in the pocket too long IMO...I could easily do without any of those. Now, however, really amps it up at the end and goes to another level plus the hornheads sample...me likes. I'm also 420 friendly and enjoy the references.

Mention Housequake and I can hear it in my
head immediately.
Mention Now and nothing much comes to mind.
I remember the chant/blast of the word Now
but beyond that nothing.
Therefore I vote for Housequake.
Peace and love.biggrin

Now is over-produced schlock compared to Housequake.

And here I was...under the safe assumption that "Housequake" was an unskippable track. "Now", like the majority of TGE..is overrated to me. A good amount of that record hasnt aged well at all.

Completely agree...

The majority of the people here think TGE is some savior amazing album... It's not, hasn't aged well at all. TGE is rated so high not because of the artistic musicianship, but because his input has been so low after his 80's releases people feel this is the "STRONGEST"... But like I said before, if you listen to COME, it has aged better than TGE.

I totally agree. In the late 90s, I thought TGE blew Come away and was going to be his best from that era. I still love TGE, but Come still sounds fantastic.

I guess you could make the argument that it was the best stuff he could come up with, especially during that time of his mostly self-imposed turmoil. I simply just dont find like 75% of the 93-95 era material strong to my ears. But when it's good, it's great.

.

Come is more interesting to me. What a bizarre, total oddity of an album. Probably the closest we'll ever hear of Prince making music while on drugs (Even though he clearly wasnt. He just tapped into some really dark shit with that one, and that layer of filth it leaves on you after you're finished listening to it is hard to wash off).

Exactly. Housequake is full of memorable hooks and gimmicks. Its atmosphere is quite unique.
Now is so weak that he felt he had to pump it up with manic screams.
The weakest track on TGE in my opinion.

I will never hand over my Prince fan club card. I am over Purple Rain too. I would much rather hear Anna Stesia or When You Were Mine than Purple Rain. It's a great song but overplayed. I usually skip it when it comes on.

Again. Hate to compare and I really dislike the lyrics in my example. But if you put Thriller against Housequake, who are you fooling when you say that people would dance to Housequake instead of Thriller? I haven't yet listened to the 12 inch. But really, is it THAT different? It sounds like a schoolband football anthem, kinda at the very start. It got no hook whatsoever, it's fucking flat and a waste of my time. The only redeeming elements are the guitar lick and the horns, but that sure as hell doesn't save it. Amazing sample by ATL though.

This thread should be restricted to the ol' time orgers whose Walkman as playing SOTT in heavy rotation during the summer of '87.

Otherwise you can't do a proper comparison.
