I've been trying to work out which Prince track Uptown Funk most sounds like... it's tricky because it's sooo "Prince", but clever enough to not be too similar to anything specific!

But I think Pretty Man is probably closest... lyrics and general vibe.

Any other thoughts?

It doesn't make sense to me when people attribute Uptown's influence to only Prince or The Time.....I hear a much broader influential foundation than that.

But sometimes people can over-think stuff. I like both songs because they're fun.

Errybody tryna sound all insightful and isht.... lol

Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

"Uptown Funk" is a collection of fairly random, beginner-level funk ideas

.

Lemme just throw my voice in with the pile of people saying Gold Standard is SO much better than Uptown Funk. I think the above quote puts it very nicely.

.

Gold Standard could stand to be longer, in my opinion. The lyrics are awful and the chorus isn't so good, but if the jam after the last chorus were stretched out, I think I could only like the song more.

The Gold Standard vs Uptown Funk? is that even a question you can LEGALLY ask a purplehead?

darlin, U need 2 B slapped!

TGS may be the only proper funk song we have recived from prince that's an offical market release (not an internet download or paper release, like Laydown and Aint Gonna Miss U), but i think that Art Official Cage comes close to funk, along with FUNKNROLL (its in the name honey).

but TGS screams DANCE, PURPLE PARTY and PURE FUNK at me whereas Uptown Funk is too mainstream for one, and that detracts all the fun from it. nobody close to me loves prince like me, so i can call TGS mine BUT all the girls at school sang for a week is Uptown Funk (after i had been listening to it since late dec/early jan... the song wasnt mine anymore). and Uptown Funk seems like mark and bruno are trying to come close to prince. ya, the song has been influenced by Jamie Starr and it has the chicken grease, catchy lyrics and funky bass BUT word on an article says BOTH prince and the time (essencially prince) can sue the songs artists for having a song 'too similar' to theirs *cough* robin thicke and marvin gaye *cough*. at least, i think thats what the article was about!

in my eyes, prince will always come out on top because he is my #1 and can master any music genre perfectly. others will say that uptown funk wins but, honey, they dont know real music and couldnt handle the funk if it was given to them on a plate... they need 2 B slapped too!

eye dont think U heard me . . .

I agree, I love Uptown Funk. Its retro with a twist. Is a funky pop fun track.

The elements thae people think were taken from Prince tend to be the elements Prince took from James Brown.

If Prince had made Uptown Funk, everyone would be raving about it.

What? No. lol

If I heard a Prince funk song start with the same bass line I'd think he's just taking the piss out of us.

"Uptown Funk" is to funk what something like Janet Jackson's "Black Cat" is to rock. It's fun for a few listens, but simply not the real deal.

Except for those who love it by Bruno Mars. They would eviscerate Prince if he released it.

Uptown Funk is commercial garbage. Mark Ronson is a great artist but he decided he needs to get paid. Bruno sounded better when he was with BoB. When I want to listen to real Uptown funk I'll listen to The Bird

Yeah......SDFD has it right "Uptown Funk" is very much "The Bird" and a little "Jungle Love." Contrived, the only redeeming value is that it employs real instruments and no autotune (I think) unlike most pop garbage today. Prince did this in early 1980s and when he did it was much more raw and funky.

About "the Gold Standard"...meh......its the only song on AoA that I regularly skip because it seems like Prince going "backward." Prince being absolutely funky to me is the PlecElec version of "Funk N Roll." TGS is the weak link in Prince's two new albums and is the reason I like "PlecElec" more as it is foward looking ane more what he is about today....rocking out and having fun.

If Uptown Funk hadnt been played on the radio incessantly I would never have listened to it more than once. Doesn't do anything for me. It sounds too much like a parody of real funk music from back in the day as opposed to being a genuinely inspired funk track. There's really no comparison between the two songs.

Well said lezama.....i cosign!
