20ten, what you like, what you don't like...

When this album was released I tended to avoid Prince.org b/c of the massive negativity that I read on here. I just needed my own ears to analyze & make my own decisions rather than let everyone's opinions taint my own.

.

When I finally downloaded it (b/c I live in the states) I thought almost the same thing as listening to AOA, it's great.

.

There's a couple duds on there for me, both Walking in Sand and Sea of Everything. I'll still listen to them, but they're generally skipped if I'm in the car listening to the album, b/c there's better songs that my ears want to hear imo.

.

The rest of the album is prettty badass for me.

.

Compassion is a crazy opener much like AOC, but seems a little more focused, I also like the message.

.

Beginning Endlessly is an insant classic for me, reaching into space for spirituality, so awesome!

.

Future Soul Song is one of the best songs he's done in a very long long time.

.

Sticky Like Glue is just ok for me, I think it's a fun song, with some nice licks & attitude, but there's more goodies in the box.

.

Act of God really does it for me. There was a thread here recently about important songs by Prince & I think this is one with good a message about the modern world that's a moderately realistic POV.

.

Lavaux, I so love this song, and he has many of his trade sounds in here, while I love, still not sure that is a good or bad thing...

.

Everybody Love Me I know is a well hated song, but it totally does it for me. It's cheesy, campy, & fun, with some great sounds, what's not to like?

.

Laydown, can I get a hell yeah!

.

Now, to me, this album totally sounds like it was released right before AOA, they have the same synthetic/artifical sound, call it electronic/modern, whatever, but it seems like he's in a groove, especially with the recent release of the X's Face. I can't explain the twin release of PLEL, but every artist needs to venture out of their comfort zone I suppose.

.

So, who hates the album, who loves it, & who's on the fence?

I didn't bother with it until he put Walk In the Sand on his now defunct Youtube channel, and hey, I actually liked this! Whenever the sun shines & I decide to take a walk, this song pops up in my head! So I decided to get the album after all. Compassion is indeed a crazy opener. And with an environmentally-friendly message. Sticky Like Glue, Act of God and Lavaux are good funky pop tunes. Laydown and Future Soul Song were performed live at the North Sea Jazz Festival in 2011- the first one kicked ass, the latter not so much. I haven't liked the majority of Prince's ballads since Scandalous- to me it feels he is just writing the same slow song over and over again. Everybody Loves Me is so embarrasing it becomes funny.
All in all, hardly a masterpiece, but still pretty good. (All the edits are because I decided to listen 2 it while posting, so I kept changing it.)

Great album from start to finish. Not a classic, but very good overall.

Absolutely hate Sea Of Everything, which I replaced with Hot Summer and I put Cause & Effect on there at the end. Solid album but it doesn't get many plays these days.

RIP sad

I listened to it all the way through when it was first available here, and was extremely underwhelmed. I recently listened to it again all the way through to see if I liked it any better. I didn't. Each to their own.

It's ok,

Not great but not bad either... I guess it's for the fanbase only.

I don't think it has any appeal to people outside the fans.

This is one of the most compelling things about Prince's body of work imo.

.

For just about every song I don't like, I find someone here who loves it & obviously it goes both ways, but I find it very ineresting. Just like the song What If, while I loathe everything about its existence, there's people here that can somehow enjoy it... it boggles the mind! It's pretty impressive that Prince can divide us so distinctively sometimes, we are quite the diverse fan base that is for sure!

It's the new millennium '1999' album.....Too bad the earlier deal, to distribute 20T3N Deluxe on WBR records fell through.

eye will ALWAYS think of prince like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. eye mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that prince wasn't of this earth, eye would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. prince

I like it all through, but don't really love anything. "Future Soul Song" is good, but not really classic material. There's nothing that really offends my taste buds like on some other recent albums in any case.

I have always liked Walk in the Sand a lot, and I also like Sticky Like Glue (except for the second part), and Future Soul Song.

Laydown is ok, too, but I am not a big fan of his "bragging and bravado" songs, but it´s still very listenable.

Other than that, the rest is kinda meh. There are still great moments in every single song on the album but most songs on it are simply not that memorable , in my opinion. Some are really difficult to listen to, let alone to get into, but I do like certain details in them.

Walk In the Sand and Sticky Like Glue (and maybe Future Soul Song) are my favorites on this album.

edit: I also like the music of Lavaux and Act of God but I simply can´t relate to the lyrics. Not at all. Not even remotely. wink

It's cloying. It's probably Prince's most cloying tune and I think the songwriting, lyrics and arrangement are equally responsible. I like his vocal, however.

When fans start to praise really dull and average albums like 20Ten and Planet Earth... It makes me wonder... Really makes me wonder... Opinion is great, but somethings are just exactly as they are.

Sign O The Times is genius, Purple Rain is amazing... 20Ten... Naw.

Sign O The Times is genius, Purple Rain is amazing... 20Ten... Naw. I never compared the album to either of those, so, not sure where you're going with that...

Love Future Soul Song, one of his best R&B songs in a long time...

Sticky like glue just gave me this old 1986 Parade era feel...

The rest is so bland and below average, nothing special.

yes, you are right.

Compared to 1999 or Sign O' The Times - 20Ten is average and maybe even "really dull" alright.. nod

A friend mailed me a copy of 20Ten back then so that was a special touch

I love that it wasn't a long album

Sticky Like Glue, Sea of Everything, Laveux are my favorites

I love Laveux, I enjoy songs where he is expressing 'frustration' at life's restraints

I like it alot. It's just a nice, compact album from start to end. It's totally underrated and prolly better than AOA - which I also like but 20ten is definitely a reminder of when Prince would hunker down in the studio mostly by himself and pop out a new album.

I love 20ten overall. It's nowhere near classic Prince, but it's miles above shit like MPLSound or Planet Earth. Even the crappy parts (Everybody, Laydown) are so crappy that they're endearing.

Future Soul Song sent shivers down my spine when I heard him sing it live... I wonder what the other songs would sound like live...except for Everybody Loves Me, which I don't love at all.

yes mediocre and dull albums like Musicology, 20ten, PlecElec are nowhere near as good as his 80s and 90s output

I think Beginning Endlessly is a classic. Would make it on my 'hits' any day of the week. The rest is ok. I think that Future Soul Song is a snore feast. Its like Prince doing one of his ballads using paint by numbers. As soon as you start, you think, oh...here we go again.
