I would think the credit for "FunknRoll"'s placement on Empire and elsewhere should go to Warner Music's sync department, not Prince's publishing.

Prince has now his own publishing company ( NPG Music publishing) , before it was warner music publishing or in the last years Universal...

Now that I'm on the topic, I'm curious about something. The song doesn't move me, so I'm not familiar with all versiins and whatnot but does he curse on any version because I could have swore I heard him saying "motherfu.."and it faded just as the big time record lable guy walked out of the shadows. My sister and daughter say that was just my wishful thinking but I thought I'd y'all anyway.

From some threads I remember here, apparently he starts saying it but fuzzes the last syllable. I guess it's like saying "darn", the effect achieved is the opposite of cussing -- in his case, could be a wink about his past.

Anyway, good for the song, it's an impressive track that sounds even better now than it did at first.

He says "Antoher Mother Further," which is the name of an album by a 70's funk band named Mother's Finest. Before I realized that, I heard "motherfucker" too, but once you hear it you realize it's definitely "further." Kinda like "Get the FUNK up!" from Batdance. Much better than "Another mother ducker." smile

Oh okay thank you both for clearing that up foe me.
I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

I'm aware of that, but labels have departments whose entire purpose is placing their recently released music in film and television. Seems to me that they are likely the reason for this, particularly as we have no evidence that NPG Music exists in anything other than name only.
