The Prince Sagas: Story One

2012 Atlanta Marriott Marquis: November:

I wasn't even supposed to be there. I had just dropped my wife off at the Fox to see Heart, and had taken one of those damn one way streets which was leading me too far away. I pulled in to the Marriot to turn around when I saw this guy with body guards around him entering the Marriott. On first glance, I thought, was it Prince? Then I thought naw. How could it be? But being a big fan, I had to check it out.

If it had been the president of the U.S., or if it had been George Clooney, or any other of celebrity status, I would have just said ah cool and would have went on my way. But it was Prince, and for me it was a big deal. So I had to pay to park. I had to pay like ten bucks to park. And so the race was on, would I see him when I arrived inside or would he be vanished, or was it even him to begin with?

Once inside, after searching a bit, it was indeed him sitting in the Sear restaurant of the Marriot. I found it amazing no one cared. But then I realized this was not the Prince of the 80's any longer, the fanaticism had died off. Plus, to be honest, he looked a lot older in person than all of the photo shopped pics. He looked, so, human. I know, he is human, but he always appeared to be a bit super human in the videos and magazines.

You know I wanted to walk up to him and speak, but what would I say? The same drivel he has heard all of his life? I admit, and I think we can all agree, if we meet someone we admire, we would like to be remembered and liked. That's a fantasy for sure.

So, I backed off, and it felt like spending ten bucks just to get a glimpse of the man. Needless to say, it was a mixed feeling of joy and disappointment. I backed away, literally. Stepping backwards, and not taking my eyes off of him so I could make this once in my life time moment stretch out as far as I could.

He finished drinking something, and was collecting himself, his two body guards standing. He was finished at his table. I took a satisfied sigh, and turned.

I bumped in to a man, apologized. He was wearing a long black coat and dark hat, and I had knocked something from his hand. It was a small camera. I bent, retrieved it, gave it to him. This is when I looked the man in his face. It was Larry Graham.

Slowly my mind was assembling the fact that Larry was standing in a position which would be most advantageous for observing. Okay, let's not mix our words here, spying. I was sure of it. The coat, the location, the camera, it all screamed spying.

He smiled at me and thanked me for the camera. I looked back over my shoulder at Prince entering the lobby. I looked back at Larry. Larry wore an expression of a man who had recognized there was an enemy in his midst who needed dealt with, and it was directed at me.

Instantly, I ran. I felt a missed attempt to grab me as I bolted away, and I began to head straight for Prince. Of course the two body guards grabbed me before I came even close. Prince had a most startled look on his face. The guards handled me roughly, and I couldn't find a name for Prince. Should I call him Prince?

He was backing to the elevator when I gripped one of the guards who was dragging me away. I hissed in fear, "Graham, it's Graham."

The body guard snapped his attention to Prince and said, "Possible code Bob George, sir."

And Prince spoke, "Confirm."

I pointed back at Graham, who was now accompanied by four caucasion men in khaki's, white shirt, and camel packs. The guard hurriedly answered, "Confirmed."

Prince said, "Shit!" He punched the button to the elevator. The wait would take to long.

He ran for the fire escape, and the guards followed with me in tow. Prince opened the fire escape door and we all entered. Once on the other side, a body guard pulled a laser pin from his jacket and began to to sadder the door to the jam.

The other guard said, "We don't have much time sir."

Prince nodded.

I asked, "Why am I here? What's going on?"

Prince said, "Larry, that man don't give up." He looked at me, "I am going to need your help."

I was elated, and scared, "Okay."

Prince reached in a pocket and removed his hand, fist clenched, "Forget what you know."

The guard welding the door had finished and said, "Sir, we need to move."

Prince opened the fist and there was two pills, one red and one blue. "Forget what you think you know is real. Take the blue pill, and you will wake up in your car, and this will all seem like a dream. Take the red pill, and find out how high this pile of rabbit shit really is."

Prince shoved the two pills in to my hand. I wanted to ask for more detail on his little cryptic speach, but a very loud bang deafened us all. The door we had just came in and welded was now puckered from the outside, as if something had sealed itself to the center of the door from the other side and had given an enormous yank. I was sure the door could not withstand many more of those tugs before it gave loose.

Prince could easily read

my puzzlement, "Not much time left. It's up to you." He firmly planted one fist on his hip and reached the other with open hand high above him, as if he were trying to touch the very sky, and he bellowed out the iconic squeal from the beginning of 'Gett Off.' A glowing beam of energy shot down around him and he flew in an instant upward and out of sight.

In some sort of shock, I said, "Holy.... "

The guard closest grabbed me and began pulling me up the stair well as the other gained some higher ground with a gun pulled and aimed at the door. Another deafening buckle as the door was stressed more. I had a pill in each hand, and was terribly confused. I had no idea what I had gotten myself in to. I thought of my wife, not far away, and of my kids back home. I needed the blue pill. I needed the pill which would place my life back in order. Yes, I knew Prince needed my help. I also knew this would be a chance to acquire a friendship with someone I had idolized since my youth. But at what cost? This was crazy. Would I have the slightest possibility of living through this event if I took the red pill? I seriously doubted it. I needed the blue pill. I needed life to go back the way it was before I had ever set eyes on Prince.

The guard pushing me up the stair well stopped, we could hear the door warping and snapping; we could feel the vibrations popping through the concrete stairs. He said, "Keep going up, I will try to hold him off as long as I can. You need to make a decision soon."

I said, "What? No! You come with me or give me a gun."

He cocked the chamber to his pistol and pointed it down below as an ominous rhythm of buckling steal and shattering concrete could be heard, and one last all deafening boom as a cloud of dust rose. The guard pointed downward with his weapon. I could see the other guard still in position, and the dark cloaked Larry Graham stepping through the shattered, clouded doorway. "Go!" the guard yelled at me, but I was frozen in place, watching the

events below unfold. The lower guard opened fire on Larry, who simply held out his hand as if it would stop the bullets... and it did. The bullets diverted and began to strike the walls and floor, never coming within an inch of Larry. I muttered in shock, "Larry Graham is bullet proof."

Now more than ever I wanted the blue pill. Shaking, I looked into my hands and saw each pill. "Go back.. ", I whispered as I began to raise my quivering blue pilled hand to my mouth.

My attention, however, was forced to see the obscenity below as the guard who had emptied his clip was fumbling for a reload. One of the khaki pants calmly walked by Larry Graham and asked the guard if he knew the real Jehovah. The guard dropped his gun, clasping his ears, and screamed in merciless agony, "I am happily established with my belief!" It was too late for the guard; as the khaki pants man continued to talk, blood oozed from the guard's ears and eyes.

He collapsed to the floor. I witnessed the mouth of the khaki pants man become large and he swallowed the guard, mysteriously gaining no weight by swallowing the brawny man. I was now trembling horribly, and I saw Larry walking up the fire escape steps as the second guard warned him, "Stay back!"

Larry did not, of course, stay back. The second guard, however, unloaded his clip on three of the khaki pants men behind Graham. The three men fell to the ground. Larry looked upward and directly in to my eyes, "You," he said sternly, and when I realized he was indeed focussed on me, I jolted with hysterical fear and the blue pill tumbled from my hand. It was like slow motion as it bounced over the edge of the steps and far below, as if I

could have quickly reached down and grabbed it. I could not, the slow movement was time distorted by panic.

Larry called to me again as threw the other guard over the rail and down to a sickening thud, "Stay where you are."

I backed up slowly, almost tripping over the step, and in one unplanned and blank moment, I swallowed the red pill. I heard a shattering guitar riff and I began to float upward. Graham was cursing me, "Get your ass back down here," but I continued to float onward and upward until I reached the top. I could not see Prince, but I could hear him, "Good, you made the correct choice. Take the door at the top of the flight, you will be on the roof. You will find me towards the Eastern edge."

I shouted out loud, "Okay, stay there!"

His voice filled my head again, "You don't need to shout, just think it to me."

I thought, "Okay, stay there."

He thought back to me, "I heard you first time."

On the roof now with Prince, he thought to me, "Secure the door."

"How do I do that?" I shouted again. Bull shit with this thinking to someone.

"You will have to fight Larry when he comes through."

I was astonished, "The hell you say. I just saw this man bounce bullets with his hand. His partner ate a dude. I say we run. Besides, I thought you wanted me to come to where you are."

"I do. But first you must delay Larry. I am going to tell you how. Clap your hands together and say 'house quake'."

I slapped my hands together and said house quake. Nothing happened. "Nothing happened," I screamed.

"You have to do it simultaneously."

The door to the roof began to open, I opened my hands wide hoping I could do this right. "Come on," I whispered to myself, "white boy gots rhythm." I shouted over to Prince, "I have been a big fan for a long time, always wanted to meet you. Now, well, I'm not so sure about meeting you anymore."

Prince said, "Yeah, lots of people want to meet me."

I thought to myself, damn, I didn't want him to see me like everyone else and I went and said something he hears all the time. I screwed it up. I screwed it all up. What could I say to repair this? "Don't you worry about Larry. I got this."

The door finished opening and Larry was there, snarling at me, "Step aside."

I clapped my hands together and shouted house quake, almost at the same time, it was a little off. A wave of energy transmitted from my clap and blew Larry's hat off, billowing his long coat. He laughed, "That was the weakest ass house quake I ever saw."

Prince shouted from afar, "That was the weakest ass house quake I ever heard."

I shouted back to him, "I didn't get much practice."

I began to clap again, but Larry caught my arm and threw me to the ground. "I am about to pluck and thump the life out of you."

"No," I squealed.

Suddenly, Prince dove from above me and slammed into Larry. Larry fell backward and Prince said, "Superfunkycalifragisexy," and a green glow surrounded Larry, freezing him in place.

Prince said, "I couldn't have done that if he hadn't been distracted by you. He knows all my moves."

"Let's finish him."

"We can't, he's frozen and yet protected at the same time by the energy. It won't last long, we have to go."

"Where are we going?"

Prince smiled, "To set a trap."

The last white khaki man stepped through the doorway. "Mr. Nelson. I've been expecting you."

Prince spread him arms and widened his stance, and with his four fingers beckoned the man to come forward. Now was my chance, I lept to my feet and slammed my hands together, "House quake," again slightly off, but closer. The wave of energy blew the man back in to the doorway and down the stair well. Prince looked at me, "Better." He ran to the door way and peeked inside, "Ain't nobody funky like me." There was a groan from within and a meaty sounding explosion. Blood sprayed upward. The man had blown to pieces.

Prince began to walk back to the opposite side of the roof. I quickly followed, "Mr. Nelson, Prince... my name is..."

Prince stopped me, "Don't have time for chit chat. When Larry comes busting out of the energy field he is going to be pissed, and I don't even think the house quake will save us."

"Why, does he get stronger when he's angry?"

"No," Prince said, "Because you can't do it right."

"Oh," I said, "Then why don't you do the house quake?"

Prince snapped at me, "Really? Do you know how powerful the house quake is if I do it? You want me to destroy this hemisphere of the Earth?"

"Sorry," I said. "You mentioned a trap, what are we going to do?"

"Yeah," Prince said. "It isn't easy, but it's the only think I know for sure that will work in a pinch."

"What do we do?" I asked.

"You distract Larry again, and I open a time space portal and send his ass someplace else."

"Okay," I said. "What other powers do I have?"

"Powers?" Prince asked.

"Yeah, what other powers does the red pill give me?"

Prince began deep breathing in a lotus type fashion, "No other powers. House quake is all."

"What?"

"The house quake is all it gives, and that will be wearing off in a bit. Pity you didn't make it work when you were full throttle."

"Well give me another pill," I said.

"Nope. There are only so many of them. You get one."

"What are in those pills?"

Prince exhaled deeply, "The essence of funk."

"The essence of f... what exactly... where do you get the essence of funk?"

Prince breathed in deeply, "James Brown's semen."

I screeched, and gagged, "James Brown's semen? You gave me a pill full of Jame's jizz?"

"Powerful isn't it?"

"I can't believe this! You gave me a pill with a load of someone's nut."

"Should have seen what happened when women used to swallow it fresh. Lightning in their hair and their tits would glow, one of them this one time begin to spew fire from her..."

There was a crackling sound where Larry laid, and the green glow flickered a bit. "Uh oh," Prince said, "he's beginning to break it a little."

"What is the deal with him? Did you break from the Jehovah’s and now he is out to get you?"

"No, I'm still Jehovah. Larry has become a funkpire."

I didn't know what to say, where to even start, "A funkpire. What is a funkpire?"

"If he gets his hands on me, he will suck the rest of the funk out of me. He already took a lot before I knew what he was all about. If he finishes me off, funk will be dead forever."

The crackling happened again, and the green glow was fading. "Get ready," Prince said.

"Can I tell you my name?" I asked.

"Sure," Prince said.

"My name is Jeff."

The green glow was gone with a static sounding pop, and Larry was shaking his head and moaning.

"Well Jeff," Prince said, "You better go do something before we get our butts whooped."

I slowly began to walk towards Larry; I muttered, "I wanted to take the blue pill."

Larry slowly rose to his feet, "Where's that skinny mother fucker with a high voice?"

I spanned my hands out and said, "I mastered the house quake while you were out, Larry. Now step back."

I could hear Prince singing Diamonds and Pearls behind me, and a wind began to sweep in from the West. Larry laughed, "So, he is going to open a portal and send me somewhere else, is he?" Larry looked up in to the sky and bellowed, "One in million, chance of a life time..."

Prince screamed, "No, don't let him sing that or we are finished!"

I made a run and tackle towards Larry, who simply placed out the bullet dodging hand and some sort of energy deflect me to the ground. He bellowed out, " a one in a million you ..." As he sang this, I could feel the hairs on my head lifting, small pebbles on the roof began to levitate. I didn't know what Larry was doing, but it could not be good. Behind Prince, a rip in the fabric of space began to open, and a mighty gust of wind began to suck Larry towards it. Larry simply sang louder, and the rip began to quiver and become unstable. I knew it was now up to me.

The running tackle did not work, so I wasn’t going to try it again. I could try throwing something at him, but this too would probably be nothing more than a slow moving bullet to him. I had to try the house quake again. I spread my hands out and slammed them together just as a mighty gust of wind slammed me in the face, and once again the house quake was no good. The strong blast of wind blew what might have been a perfect house quake to pieces.

I was taken back as the roof began to vibrate and shake from Larry’s verses. There were two explosions by Larry, and when the smoke cleared there was a female where each explosion had taken place. One of the women was Vanity, the other was Sheila E. Prince cried out in panic, “Oh no! Larry opened the Ex-Zone! I told you it was trouble when he started singing.”

Vanity said, “Prince, why don’t you love me?”

Sheila said, “Because he loves me, bitch!”

The two women argued the point and came to a realization: Prince loved neither of them. “Yeah,” Vanity said. “He used both of us.”

They both turned on Prince with hostile anger born from deep resentment and betrayal. Prince gulped, “Oh no. This is going to hurt.” The two women rushed and pinned Prince to the ground. I knew if I could not take Larry down, I could at least try to handle these two women. I began to run to the task, when all of a sudden, another explosion occurred. This one was much larger, and behind Larry. As soon as the smoke there cleared, it was Sinead O'Connor. Her head was shaved down to the bare skin, which was pale and bright, and she wore a flowing black gown which leaned towards a sinister design.

She saw me running and spoke, “Stop.”

I was frozen in my tracks; I could not twitch a single muscle. I watched in agony as Larry walked by me and said, “Oh Prince, I’m going to suck the entire funk from you now. Finally, I got you.” He looked at me and winked, “Couldn’t have done it without you man.” He licked his lips and slowly approached Prince with great delight.

Prince screamed to me, “Jeff, you gotta’ break free, I can’t get loose!”

I thought to him, “I can’t move.”

He screamed, “You can do it!”

I thought to him, “No, I can’t. Sinead has some sort of power lock on me!”

He said, “Yeah, that bitch is evil.” Then Prince thought to me, “You can do it, there has to be a way! What’s the one thing I have always tried to convey in all of my songs?”

I thought to him, “That you can have sex with any woman you want?”

“Yes,” he thought to me, “this is true, but what else?”

“That you are the funkiest musician to ever live?”

Prince nodded and thought back to me, “Also true, but not what I am thinking. Believe in yourself. Just believe in yourself; don’t let fear cloud your judgment.”

I hesitated, and thought back to him, “Which song was this?”

Prince screamed out, “All of them dammit!” Larry was now standing over the pinned down Prince, ringing his hands together and smiling. Prince thought to me again, “You can find a way.”

What was I to do? I calmed down, and I thought towards Sinead. “Sinead? Can you hear me?”

She thought back to me, “Quiet worm!”

I thought to her, “It’s not your fault, Sinead.”

She shrugged and thought back, “Yeah, I know that.”

I thought to her again, “Sinead, look at me. It’s not your fault.”

She looked over to me and thought back, “I know.”

“No, no you don’t. It’s not your fault.”

She began to speak out loud now, in a whisper, “Don’t fuck with me.”

“It’s not your fault.”

A tear trickled from her eye and she said, “Don’t fuck with me.”

“It’s not your fault.”

The power holding me broke loose, and Sinead open her arms to me. I ran to her and hugged her, “It’s not your fault,” I said in her ear as I hugged her. Then I tripped her backwards and slammed her bald head on the roof, knocking her unconscious. “It is your fault,” I said and thumped her nose.

I stood to see Larry placing his hands on Prince’s forehead before the violent rip in the space time portal. The two women held him down tightly and cackled as Prince began to shake and tremble. I called out to Larry, “Mr. Graham,” he turned to me and stared curiously. I clapped my hands together, “House quake mother fucker.”

An ominous blast of energy shot forth from my clasped hands, a wave which blew dust and debris out from me in a radius and caught Larry square in the chest. He was lifted and tossed back into the portal, screaming as he entered. The portal snapped shut in an instant, and Vanity along with Sheila slowly shook their heads as if coming from a deep trance.

Vanity asked, “What happened? Oh Prince baby, are you alright?”

He sat up and said, “Yeah, I’m good. It’s okay girls.”

I was now standing over the three and I said, “Okay, if it’s alright, I am heading out.”

Prince chuckled, “Yeah man. It’s cool. Thanks…” he snapped his finger a couple of times while squinting at me, “I can’t remember your name, sorry.”

I said, “Jeff. The name is Jeff. I mean, I thought you would remember me after going through all of this.”

Prince laughed, “What, this? This kind of thing happens to me at least twice a month. I always have to get help from time to time.”

“Oh,” I said, and turned sadly away.

“Hey,” he called, “Jeff, wait a minute.” He walked over to me and placed a friendly arm around me, “Look man, it don’t matter if I remember you or not. I see a lot of people, and I can only keep up with those I see every day. You know, the ones closest to me. Dig? Just like I bet there’s some people close to you who think the world of you? Right?”

“Yeah, yeah, that is right.”

“I’m just a face on a magazine if you don’t live with me day by day. And that’s just the way it is. Now you go home to those folks you know so well who can’t live without you.”

“Okay,” I said. I was on my way, and I turned to him and said, “No one is going to believe any of this happened.”

Prince just smiled, “Yeah, well nobody believes this is my real hair either…”
