MJ is in his own league. He will be remembered always and that is because his catalogue is relatively short, consistent and he made history with his videos that were essential part of the whole evolution of videos and MTV. He also was a big touring act. He didn't tour USA after BAD but Dangerous tour 1992-93 and History 1997 were huge stadium tours that reached millions and that is something prince never did. Full scale stadium tour in Europe. I remember Prince being big during 1990-1995 but i can't name a song after MBGITW. In that sense Prince compares to many, many acts from different genres that had a peak at some point, then faded away but remained fairly succesfull among fans and live audiences. Smashing Pumpkins, De La Soul, Oasis, Def Leppard and many many others sold millions of records and made a impact but couldn't maintain the level of success for various reasons. Prince never really made it into the Legend -category where U2, Stones, Madonna, Springsteen, Metallica, Bon Jovi and couple of others hold their position. All these acts sold more than Prince but were quite equal with him when it comes to touring and venues during 1990's. Now all of these except Prince tour stadiums. Metallica has toured european Stadiums/festivals every year since 2006. Scandinavia has been considered good for Prince but he has done 4 shows in Sweden since 2000 and the combined headcount is about 50 000. Iron Maiden did 16 shows in sweden in that same period and the total headcount is around 480 000. When Metallica or Maiden hit Scandinavia they can play two stadiums in each country totaling around 300 000 people/tour and they tour every other year. Maiden and Metallica compare to Prince quite well because both of these had their peak during 1980's. 4 really good albums in short period and average since. Maiden did a brave thing 2006 and did complete album shows with new album and fans still came and now consider this one of the best tours by the band. Prince is different genre, different person but some of these acts from same era have done so much better from same startingpoints. Play Don't Cry, Nothing Else Matters, Dream On, Fear of the Dark, Teen Spirit or something like that and every 18 year old who follows music know these songs. Play When doves cry and that is the first time they hear it. Long rant but prince is obsolete and has been since 1999. O2 was partly curiosity about the new purpose for the unlucky Milleniumdome.

Is Charlie Chaplain obsolete? Is Duke Ellington? If you say yes to those, then yes I guess Prince will be too, but that's a very weird definition of the word "obsolete".

Prince lost his mind when he became a JW

I so 1000% agree on this one.

His 'melange' of God and sex was so great, pure, original, honestly meant, sexy, daring and meaningful when he started as a musician.
And not only in the eighties, but just until he lost it halfway the nineties.

Madonna tried the same, but she couldn't get away with it in all honesty the way Prince did. Prince also had that nasty stylish approach. Madonna was just a bit too vulgar in that fashion imho.
He lost it all, everything, when he got totally fucked up with the JW shit.
Poor fellow.
One thing religious people will never understand is that religion is like a penis; you can't just shove it down anyone's throat or ass like that.
Religion needs to be a private matter. Not a show off thing.

And look now where he is. If it wasn't for his live perfomance and his weird way of not willing to participate with everyday life and progressing technology, he would be forgotten by now.

And I can't explain why I still follow him, am still interested in what he does.
But with every (mis)step he makes, I feel sad and left out.
We're not being treated nice by Prince. And stop whining about his tremendous amount of output.

He promised us a Purple Rain anniversary treat, and look what he did: he lied ! It's like he missedused us to get attention for his new release.
I still hope he releases what he announced and promised.
But I think we and WB are being fucked up.

Prince's career has always had it's ups and downs in terms of how he puts it out there. For better or worse he does it on his own terms. It's always been a balance between wanting to be popular but not embracing technology that's out there to do so.

He's been called irrelevant by some for close to 20 years and still lands albums in the top 10 in 2014 with very little promotion and a fanbase that couldn't be more adept at taking advantage of leaks and boots.

His songs are regularly covered and his music is taught in university. His released albums already constitute one of the most vast and interesting musical offerings out there, and if the vault ever opens wide, it will make his body of work even more monumental -- a pop musicologist's dream come true.

Art Official Age is actually great news because he venured out of his legacy comfort zone and made something compelling. His usual critics were not happy with it, but they are the same people that started calling him irrelevant 10, 15, 20 years ago, so WTF do they know? They are proving themselves wrong by continuing to discuss his relevance ages after they first came out with their Statement of Irrelevance.

Obsolete artists don't get threads like this, they were left alone long ago.

And couple of responses to my last post just proves that most of P fans here just don't get it that he is just another popmusician with nothing so special to offer. Mix in some blues, motown, rock and funk -tradition and package it in a way that general public thinks it's new. Throw in names like Duke Ellington, Louis Amstrong and Johnny Cash if yoy will but Prince is not comparable to them. He is contemporary pop-artist and should be referred to his kind. I understand that some here don't get the comparisons to Iron Maiden or Springsteen but they come from the same era, culture and have managed to maintain their status within mainstream popular culture. Prince didn't. He will never be a legend like MJ or Madonna and that is something yoy have to get ovee with because in a long run he is just a guy who popularized traditional musicstyles. There's hardly anything new in his catalog. George Clinton did everything he did way before.

Obsolete? No. I agree that Prince is fucking up his career, but the man's a living legend! His past music is far superior to anything that was released in it's day, and is far superior to any of the music released by today's so called "top artists". A Legend can never be Obsolete. Purple Rain album and movie will forever be regarded as one of Rock's alltime best one two punch.

No mate. You don't understand what it is about Prince that makes him so unique. Thats like saying Miles Davis was just another tumpet player. Miles Davis stated himself the high regard he had for Prince, as have many artists.

Throw in names like Duke Ellington, Louis Amstrong and Johnny Cash if yoy will but Prince is not comparable to them.

Well, he's not dead yet if thats what you mean.

He is contemporary pop-artist and should be referred to his kind. I understand that some here don't get the comparisons to Iron Maiden or Springsteen but they come from the same era, culture and have managed to maintain their status within mainstream popular culture.

Prince isn't a contemporary pop artist anymore.
The 2 acts you mentioned also fall easily into genres. Iron Maiden are a metal band... do they have a Jazz album? a Soul album? Pop? Funk? Piano Ballads? They've never really been known for fusing genres and crossing boundaries in the musical sense. They do metal. They're good at it. They have a whole band contributing - Prince often works in alone. The same with Springsteen. They do what they're good at and stick to it. Prince is far more experimental.

Prince didn't. He will never be a legend like MJ or Madonna and that is something yoy have to get ovee with because in a long run he is just a guy who popularized traditional musicstyles. There's hardly anything new in his catalog. George Clinton did everything he did way before.

You're aware Prince has already been inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of fame? He's also the only artist to appear on the front cover of guitar player magazine, bass player magazine, drum player magazine, and keyboard player magazine.

Jackson and Madonna are undoubtedly legends. Neither will be remembered as great musicians.

I don't remember him promising, but there was a press release0 announcing it, so you have every right to be disappointed.

Prince was never the obedient "signed" artist and he just spent almost 20 years calling all the shots with no suits telling him what to do, so it's certainly predictable some issue would develop. Personally, I think the tipping point after a couple of frustrations was the leak a few days before the double release, I can just see Prince hiting the roof and blaming WB, then saying they can't be trusted and he'd sell more records on his own -- the same way he reacted when Rave failed to catch on.

I could see why he would be more disappointed this time. He obviously worked a great deal on these two records, he took more time and nurtured some young talent in the process, and quite well if you ask me. Whatever contribution Josh made to AOA, it was very worthy and far superior to Kirk Johnson's work. As for 3EG, they were terrific live by all accounts, the record wasn't as tight as Art Official Age, but it did have four great songs (Wow, Fixurlifeup, Anotherlove, Funknroll) and two or three more that were probably overshadowed by Prince's solo album. Stop This Train and Tic Tac Toe rely on the same repetitive nursery patterns, but other than that Prince just had a stellar year, musically speaking.

Business wise, we all know it could have been much better. Personally, I always feared that Prince would try to sanitize his Purple Rain lyrics, so many of you who are wishing for remasters may not like what you get if you ever get it. This is definitely a "Be careful what you wish for..." No one knows for sure what is going on but you can't say there isn't plenty of Prince music to enjoy.

Prince is different genre, different person but some of these acts from same era have done so much better from same startingpoints. Play When doves cry and that is the first time they hear it. Long rant but prince is obsolete and has been since 1999. O2 was partly curiosity about the new purpose for the unlucky Milleniumdome.

He's a certified legend, sorry you missed all the memos about it, but you can always head to Wiikipedia to brush up on your music knowledge, it sounds like you have not read an article on it since 1992, looking at the names you list.

U2, the Stones, Madonna, Springsteen, Metallica and Bon Jovi would laugh loud at your suggestion Prince isn't a legend like them. In fact Mick and Keith were enthusiastic front row guests at his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, Jagger is a longtime admirer and Keith was really cheering Prince during his performances at the gala, including While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Bono also professed his admiration a couple of times. Madonna and Prince have worked together, they don't much like each other. I know Springsteen respects Prince as a musician, may not like him as a person. As for Bon Jovi, I really doubt he considers himself more of a legend than Prince, and his brand of arena rock can hardly be compared with Prince's body of work (Bon Jovi knows this, maybe you should too).

Didn't some folks escape the pysch ward over the weekend?

Seriously, I only come here to get news about releases, the occasional interesting thread, and that's it. I certainly have no use for these pathetic threads with garbage opinions.

lol, the amount of butthurtedness in this thread is glorious! All the OP did was express his opinion, by making this thread. Some of ya'll are acting like he (or she) violated your Civil Rights. lol Look, the bitter feelings toward Prince are real. Prince brought this on himself. That's just the way it is. Folks are gonna come to a PRINCE website and express their feelings about PRINCE. And it's not always gonna be how great, cute, or talented he is. Deal with it.

I agree with this post. Prince use to be spirtual instead of religious. Now he's definitely arrogantly religious, which alienates a large demographic that don't share his religious beliefs.
