Yes it's time for this year's Another Lonely Christmas thread - but this one is different!

Simple question: With Prince frequently performing old B-sides such as She's Always In My Hair, would he have eventually done the same with Another Lonely Christmas if he hadn't become a Jehovah's Witness?

My understanding is he performed ALC only once ever, and that was the day after Christmas 1984. Has he ever said why he didn't perform the song other than that one time?

In 1984 Appollonia went and spent Christmas with her parents in Nebraska, none of the Revolution wanted to hang out, and Prince's own family had decided to spend the holidays on the Costa del Sol. After waking up on Boxing Day with a horrible banana daiquiri hangover, Prince vowed never to spend another Christmas on his own. Thus 1984 was the last year he actually had a lonely Christmas, and so he never felt the need to sing the song again.

I just can't believe that Prince made the Revolution rehearse to learn the song so it could be performed only once - ever. Then again, this is Prince so I should know better razz

My guess is he didn't like it that much--they did it the one time shortly after release, but since there were 14 years or so after that before he became involved with the Witnesses, he probably would have played it again during that time if he liked it. It's his only "Christmas" song, after all, and he did shows that time of year pretty frequently.

I guess I'm just surprised he never changed his mind about performing it if he didn't like it, as he did wait 8 years before performing She's Always In My Hair for the first time in concert. However I do understand ALC probably had a depressing effect on the audience, which could be why it was never played again.

One time way back in the day I played ALC during a company Christmas party, the whole damn room was basically in shock. lol

Remember this is a guy who performed Jughead over 60 times, and after 1985 has done Computer Blue once. He routinely plays substandard material to death, and leaves classic songs on the shelf forever...or just plays shortened medley versions of classic songs while playing Play That Funky Music over and over and over and over.
