I just really don't understand this concept of saying an album sounds 'dated' .

Oh really the production sounds like 1994? Well guess what ? That's BECAUSE IT IS !!

Did you expect it to sound like 2044 production ? or 1944 ?

I just have no concept how people can say an album sounds dated.

EVERY album, every song EVER is dated, it was recorded at a specific time and nothing will ever change that, youy personal perception might be that it sounds like it is from a different time period but nothing changes the fact when it was written, recorded, produced and released...

Nothing.

it's a fair point but I suppose it comes down to what do you hear first - "wow, what a great song" or "wow, listen to that 90's production". If something sounds dated you probably have to get past the production to hear the great song, as opposed to the production helping carry the song. Just a theory.

It's both, the production of Pheremone, the song, the story telling and lyrics are all just golden. Under rated and under appreciated by Prince fans as well as the generalized public.

The lyrical content has so much dark imagery, so erotic and full of lust. The song writing on that song is outstanding yet at the same time making it a groovable beat to listen to. If Eye Was Ur Girlfriend is one of his best lyrical songs imo but you can't dance to it the way you can with Pheremone.

Pheremone still captures a great artistic content from Prince at the same time with a timeless beat that still sounds ahead of it's time today when you lsiten to it.

If you listen to Pussy Control compared to Pheremone in terms of production... welll.... ENOUGH SAID.

meh...Never liked it much. Its still an above-average exapmple of Prince "new jack" 90s sound but much too cheesy saved if only by some interesting lyrical phrasings here and there.

Pheromone is pure genius. In fact, the whole Come album is insanely underrated. A fantastic record.

I agree. Come is always a top-tier Prince album for me.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Pheromone is a great track. I was a little disappointed with the album that was released, especially the version of Come the song. I wish he had included all of the songs from Glam Slam Ulysses on this release as well.

If that happened... It would have been his best album of the 90's hands down.

Really? An album recorded in the mid 90's sounds like it is from the mid 90's?

What a total failure... rolleyes

TGE hasn't aged well IMO...

EVERY album, every song EVER is dated, it was recorded at a specific time and nothing will ever change that, youy personal perception might be that it sounds like it is from a different time period but nothing changes the fact when it was written, recorded, produced and released...

Nothing.

Let me explain it to you.

Dated is novelty copied from something original and co-opted in a crass and corny way and found acceptable at a particular point in time. Think Members Only jackets, smoke and lasers in music videos. The production limitations of the time has nothing to do with it, it's about quality, originality and taste. And it's usually not until the novelty wears off that some people can finally spot how tacky, empty, silly or bad something is/was.

Example: 1980's Raiders Of The Lost Arch vs Allan Quartermain movies. Both big Hollywood movies but which one is dated? It's about quality and originality. With a big emphasis on Quality.

Example: The Beatles vs The Monkeys. Which one is dated?

Example: Jaws vs Phiranah

I say it's about taste because some people cannot see the difference. There are men in their 50's wearing Members Only Jackets thinking they look cool, ..or listening to something as corny as The Gold Experiance thinking the same thing. If you cannot see the difference no biggie, it's just a matter of taste. And To make matters worse, TGE is not Princes Members Only Jacket, but the knock off sold at discount retailers that no one bought as the fad had passed by.

Some people today cannot see AOA is a corny dated album, it's only after time lets people distance themselves and stand back to be able to see silliness people find acceptable at the time. Like a macro photograph zoomed out. Look at some old photographs of yourself.
