IMHO, It was a gimmick that was very much a product of it's time, what with the cd being the new kid in town so to speak as the new main format

.

CDs had overtaken vinyl sales by the end of the 1980s. Which is well-known.

That's what I mean. Perhaps I should have said "newer" or "newish" as the de-facto source of music-related media. Also, I like the "Year Zero" avatar you got there. Great, often overlooked NIN record.

The gun mic part is really smudgy on mine at least. I didn't even remember the gun was supposed to be there before I read this thread.

I don't know if my copy's a bit damaged or if the hologram has just faded over the years, but generally I didn't find it to be of that high quality. Some of the ones I got back in the day that were bundled with computer games and computer game magazines were more detailed and not as messy.

I don't have the gun mic on mine. Pearl is holding a cigarette. Diamond is rubbing Prince's chest. Prince is stroking a strand of pearls (flirting with his eyes and giving great face). Everything is very clear, but I don't see a mic.
What?

Oh yeah, there is no gun mic. I'm not really seeing the pearls though. It's smudgy.

The hologram is easier to see clearly when you go to a dark enough room and point a light directly at it. Sort of sucks if you just want to have a look at an album cover. lol

edit - of yeah, the pearls are in the foreground. That's what he's supposedly touching. Okay, I get it now.

Holy shit, this thing is indeed in full colour if you hold it in a correct angle. I didn't remember that either, I've so seldom bothered to take a good look at it.

I'd rather play with the hologram cover than listen to most of the album.

Aw c'm'on, it's a pretty solid 9 track album — scissors are yours.

There are 4-5 songs I like. The problem is the lows are LOWS. This is one of my least favorite Prince albums, despite the strength of the standouts.

This thread reminded me... a friend of mine on the East Coast owned a printing company and was in the bidding for this cd cover(thru Warner Bros I imagine). He gave me a copy of their entry - after his company wasn't chosen.

It's a larger version of the hologram cover - about 50% larger. Still have it floating around my collection of O+> vinyl/magazines, etc.

Reading the replies to this thread I'm gathering that its not ultra ultra rare but still something nice to have and keep if you find it in a shop and like it.

I prefer the holographic cover, kinda reminds me of when i was a kid and when I used to flip out over shiny Pokemon cards haha.

Got the hologram CD WITH an extra hologram about 3 times the size of the CD hologram. Framed it.

How or where did you find this? A store promo? I never heard of a larger hologram with the cd when it came out.
