Teacher, Teacher (updated sound quality) - appreciation thread

Okay, so this track has always been one of my favorite unreleased studio songs... obviously, it's not super deep, but maaaaaan, what a fucking catchy, fun-as-hell pop song. And yes, I absolutely love how his voice blends with Wendy & Lisa's (please, don't turn this thread into a pro/con W&L thread, they're so damn tired) and the way he sings the bridge with such urgency! "I KNOW..YOU GET SO LONELY..." Good god.

And the version on BFTP 2.0 is such a dramatic step up from what I had previously...and interestingly, I thought that my previous version was "studio quality." Clearly that wasn't the case - I'm hearing harmonies that I just never heard and I fucking love it.

No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

Sex is not love. Love is not sex. Putting words in other people's mouths will only get you elected.

The song indeed struck me when listening on headphones. The former version really didn't do it for me.

I'm feeling the same about Neon Telephone and Eternity - the quality of these on BFTP2 compared to what I had is a big step up. Totally rediscovered those 2. Amazing to think about the amount of great songs that have never seen the light of day.

Teacher, Teacher is an unreleased song first recorded in Summer, 1982 at Prince's Kiowa Trail Home Studio, Chanhassen, MN, USA (along with several other tracks that would re-appear over the next several years). In early 1986, Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman worked on the track further, at either Prince's Galpin Blvd Home Studio, Chanhassen, MN, USA, or the Washington Avenue Warehouse, Eden Prairie, MN, USA, adding vocals and sitar. It was included as the eighth track on the late April, 1986, configuration of the Prince and the Revolution album Dream Factory. It was included as the seventh track on the first disc of the 3 June, 1986 configuration, but was not included on the 18 July, 1986 configuration

Teacher, teacher
I may not love you
But you're the teacher
I try to do what you want me to
I know you get lonely
But you gotta know
It wasn't love
Let me tell you honey
I'm just a young girl
Don't think I know it enough

Teacher, teacher
I don't wanna get an A
Teacher, teacher
There's gotta be a better way

I'm sick and tired of makin' plans
Without makin' up my mind (Make up your mind)
Teacher, teacher
Can't you see I just need a little time
I know you've been cryin'
Just think that you're not alone
Just cry me a river
It's what you'll deliver
We have to do it on the floor

Teacher, teacher
I don't wanna get an A
Teacher, teacher
There's gotta be a better way

(Woohoo, yeah)
Teacher, teacher
I've been tryin' to get you down
But why should you get used to somebody
Who won't be around
I know you get discouraged
Cause you wanna do it all the time

Honey I can't let you use my body
The same way you use my mind

Teacher, teacher
I don't wanna get an A
Teacher, teacher
There's gotta be a better way

I like it, I forget where I got it from but I don't think it's the official. I should ask Susannah if she still has the cover art.

"Susannah Melvoin on designing the Dream Factory album cover: Prince and I used to draw together. He was actually a really great artist. I was really into it, too. I would always have a pad and I was always drawing. I've been drawing since I was a kid. We would sit down and we would draw together. One particular night he couldn't come up with an album cover (for Dream Factory). I came up with a couple of different ones. One of them was actually a dramatized version of myself, opening up a door into this dream world, with images that were based on some of the songs. I remember that there was a lot of white space, because, I couldn't fill up the background with color... Everything was kind of drawn onto white paper. But, the doors were very ornate and I'm opening the door into the Dream Factory. The second album cover didn't have me on it. It just had the name Dream Factory, with some things hanging off the words. I used to do murals in the house where Prince lived, incredible, crazy murals that he would ask me to paint. We were always into doing stuff like that." - Susannah Melvoin

Great track. The Dream Factory era brought out the & the Revolution side of Prince & the Revolution in some really beautiful pop songs.

I've always enjoyed this track. Love the melody & all. Really love the ending where Prince is harmonizing. I wish the ending was longer, actually. biggrin
