And these are some of the reasons why I find it completely resonable for those that are not as informed by the facts as T (from personal experience) or databank (from research) to jump to the false conclusion that Prince leaks bootlegs. It seems like something he would do: leak bootlegs privately while condemning them publically.

I don't believe this is the case but I do understand why some would. It would be just like him...

That said, what makes you think the recent leaks had ANYTHING to do with the withdraw from social media? There is ZERO evidence that this is true. It's mere speculation on your part.

I totally agree that it wouldn't be delirious to think that prince could have leaked some tracks purposedly, particularly since the dawn of the internet. However as you point out it doesn't hold up to the scrutiny of research, similarly to "Prince is a drug addict", "Prince is gay/bi" or "Prince planned the cancelation of TBA from day 1". None of those theories are unbelieveable in themselves, only they have been contradicted by any research ever done so far. Therefore even while one has an intuition that makes sense I believe it is pointless to mention it in a debate or a public forum, as it will only confuse people for nothing and undermine the credibility of the speaker. If one is so convinced of something that they wish to uncover what they suspect being an untold truth, then one should go doing more research and inteviewing more people and see if they can finally find some truth to their guess and keep quiet until they do. I have sometimes suspected some things about Prince, such as him playing the guitar on the intro of the album version of Like A Prayer despite Per Nielsen's research not uncovering such a fact, so I've come here in the past not to claim that it was the case but to ask whether there may be some truth to it, and the consensus among several people who'd already discussed it and had obviously done some research about it was that there wasn't, so I just backed off and said, "OK, then, thanks". I still have a feeling it may be something that further research may uncover but as I'm not in a position to interview Patrick Leonard or anyone else involved, I just keep my mouth shut about it because I've got no legitimate ground to make such a statement.

I don't completely agree with you here.

I'm sure that Prince has appeared on tracks uncredited that we don't know about yet and I think it's okay to speculate.

I remember a few years after the Nude Tour, a friend and I were discussing the list in the tour book of all the protege/ass. artists' music that Prince had appeared on.

He was convinced that EVERYTHING was on that list, anything not listed had no Prince involvement.

We now know this isn't accurate, but at the time, all I had was my ears.

I argued that Prince was on more than was credited on Hey Man Smell My Finger. This has since been confirmed.

I argued that Prince had more to do with Mazarati's LP than just 100 MPH. It was later confirmed that he cowrote 2 other songs.

My point is, sometimes speculation is proven true, sometimes it's not, but, it can be fun between fans. I get that it's not cool when speculation becomes rumor and then gets assumed to be fact. But we shouldn't censor ourselves and be afraid to play guessing games or share our unfounded opinions based on this.

All that said, I hope you'll remember that I agree that the theory regarding Prince intentionally releasing boots does not stand up to the research and facts. I simply disagree that such theories should be censored to avoid confusing the facts.

I see where u're coming from and u've had a hell of an intuition when it comes to Satisfied and Mazarati. We can disagree awright on the principle and I would be tempted to agree about the speculation is fun part if we didn't live in the world we live in where people so easily jump on speculation and naively take anything they read for granted. I mean do u remember that girl who once wrote here that she was amazed that prince could also play the violin, as proven by the Face Down video (where he pretends to do so while the actual "violins" in the song are in fact synths falloff)? Many young and/or easily influenced people visit this forum, and they swallow everything, and the next thing you know the majority of the people here will claim Prince produced A Magical Place because they read it in a thread. I'm very concerned by the way rumor, hoaxes, conspiracy theories and false informations go viral on the internet, it's a preoccupation of mine that goes far beyond the borders of this forum: I often have to expose hoaxes on Facebook as well for example. And way to often the final justification people who spread them oppose me is "I have a feeling it's true anyway" or "even if it's not accurate there's some parts of it that's true so it was worth speading". I can't condone that. Call it a little obsession of mine if u will, but I find this phenomenon a little frightening in terms of how it may contribute to shape the future of our democratic societies. So yeah maybe I'm a little too concerned about speculation, I'll give you that, but it's my personal holy war so I have to keep fighting it wink

I can dig it. I would counter that with resources like PrinceVault around, false speculation can always be proven wrong (or at the least, proven unlikely). I would say we're lucky to have them to turn to when rumors get out of control.

As for being "a little too concerned about speculation", you keep doing you. It's all good. The 2 of us have proven time and again that people can strongly disagree on this site and remain not only civil, but friendly as well. Here's hoping our example will influence others...

I assume 1nonly is claiming knowledge of certain potential future leaks (and that's panned out in the past--so I anticipate this will as well, so YAY!)--but even apart from what 1nonly knows...

.

ANYTHING COULD LEAK AT ANYTIME--just because it only takes someone getting a random notion to post and a couple of minutes to do it.

.

I am kind of confused by the statement "it can only be tracks of better quality or something completely different"--doesn't that pretty much cover anything?

It does, but considering that some of these recent leaks are recenlty heard tracks in better quality like Moonbeam Levels then what I said stands correct.

We either get something we've heard already in better quality, like maybe a better sounding 'Go', for instance, or we get something new that most have not heard, like a track like Pickle.

Reliable sources have said next year, but would not elaborate on what. And no, I'm not purposefully trying to be coy. I tried to ask for specifics and was shut down.

I'm with y'all, and hope this pans out for the better and sooner than later, of course.

It's just info, folks. Please don't shoot the messenger. I didn't. biggrin biggrin biggrin

What? What? What? A clearer version of Moonbean Levels!!! I fucking love that track.

Yeah, because who doesn't love all those "I'm convinced Prince is involved in this track" threads which usually involve things that sound nothing like Prince.

.

Hell, even when there's an abundance of evidence WRT his involvement or lack of it e.g. the Martika album or "Like A Prayer", still someone will insist P is involved. A message to all of those famz: if you are too lazy to do any research, shut your yap, OK? It's bloody easy to shout "P is involved in Y", how about you do some research first? But even when confronted by the evidence of them being wrong they still refuse to admit this.

.

And yes, we should censor threads where peopel trot out those long debunked rumors and give people posting bans. Just look at the state of the Org and realise that this is what you get when you let the lunatics have free reign.

.

Hell, just look at the Facebook posts from Housequake or The Prince Museum: guaranteed to see evidence of utter stupidity. They announce the Dutch translation of a Prince bio, and immediately you get five people asking "how about the English book". For fuck's sake, it's 2014, is putting a couple of words into a search engine that bloody hard? It's 2014 and you've never heard about websites that sell books?

Now I see your point about Prince USING this TBA situation to create some hype, I have never denied the fact that he probably did so and your experiences are, honestly, very interesting when it comes to how the public got to know about TBA at the time (even though there were also numerous articles and some radio airplay that didn't depend on Prince).

.

It's an album that was culled at the time they were shipping it to stores. Of course copies slipped out. And then the media got on it because this was NEW MUSIC by a MAJOR POP STAR. It's like being amazed that people learned about the nudie pics Madonna posed for before she was a pop star: of course that shit gets "leaked".

.

Was the message in Alphabet St. sincere or a way to "promote" the bootleg?

.

NO IT WAS NOT PROMO. Sheesh.

From Wiki: Just before the album was released to the market, Prince recalled all copies and abandoned the entire project, leaving roughly 100 European promotional copies in circulation, and several American copies that would be widely bootleged in the years to come.

From the Phili Enquirer published back in 1988:

What is known is that a few journalists were sent copies in advance tapes of The Black Album for review.

Back in the day it was known that the album was sent to reviewers. You couldn't read a review about Lovesexy without The Black Album also being mentioned and they would talk about the content because they had heard the album.

.

Yes, that's what happens when records are about to be released: the press gets copies beforehand so they can publish their review when the album is in stores, because reviews = exposure = potential sales. TBA was cancelled less than a week befoire its intended release. They were actually loading the trucks with the albums so they could be shipped. Of course some reviewers had already received their copies by then, and it is also known that WBR tried their very best to retrieve all promo copies, even from execs.

.

There is absolutely NOTHING that indicates that this was planned, because the whole thing was a massive waste of time and effort and money. That's NOT the kind of thing you do. So what if it was an underground hit -- WBR and Prince don't make money that way.

.

I really don't get why this is so hard to understand.

yes I always felt the black album was a covert release to subvert WB ...i've never been able to fully explain why i felt that way tho!

.

Yes, because Prince can just dump some album at WBR and they'd release it without vetting it first.

.

They're running a FRIKKING BUSINESS.

While nearly everything Bart said in all those posts is correct--I kind of hoped when I saw there was new activity on this thread it meant there was a new leak.

.

Ah well.
