was diggin Sexual Suicide the other day and this song blows anything from AOA out of the water .. so yes .. many classic albums could be made with even some of his worse songs from the rev era

That song kept me from abandoning Prince through many a bad album, back in the 90's, lol. I bought a bootleg in the late 80's or so, and everytime a new album came out, I'd think why didn't he just release Sexual Suicide, instead of like Gangsta Glam or something. It was nice to get it on Crystal Ball after waiting all those years for it.

What Sausage said.

Sad but basically true.

Side note: Man is that Basement Tapes Complete box great!

Keeping my Tree With Roots set just because it's so legendary as a boot, and I kinda like the home-made feel of it.... but so fantastic to have that music in the best quality we're ever likely to hear it....

I've got the Basement Tapes set waiting for when I can really listen... wore out Tree with Roots (well, if it had been on vinyl I would have worn it out--the files are doing fine, I suppose). That, by the way, is an incredibly well chosen title, and I kind of wish they'd used it for the official release.

.

However, once all these Prince things started popping up, I decided I could digest them better in the little bits of listening time I had available.

.

And yes, while I'm not sure a comparable length selection of vault tracks would "blow away all his other albums"--I can certainly see multiple top quality albums being created using things socked away in there. Not just slapped together a la Crystal Ball, but thought out, well-sequenced, maybe some smoothed out transitions recorded (nothing too extensive). And that's based on what we all know is in there--I would be surprised if there aren't many very good things that were either kept safe during the leaky years or that have been put in storage since then.

.

I also imagine he could put together perfectly mediocre releases (and maybe just plain bad ones) using many of the same tracks as starting places--he's a man of incredible resourcefulness that way.

.

But he's not gonna do either one.

Everything is "unreleased" until he releases it, so based on what he's done sine SOTT I'd say no. Prince is still fully capable of releasing music way better than anything already in his catalog. I think he's lost focus on making the album as outstanding as possible. He enjoys the rest of the process just as much: the rehearsals, the styling, photoshoots, interviews, etc. Over the past 10 years or so, there are so many songs he played live, that are better put together and superior to the album versions by far. Yet he has pretty much no hit singles.

yeh but will he release them?

the crystal ball record was rough .. all the modern cartoony songs undermined the great classic princs song .. stuff like hide the bone wink wind get it? .. had crystal ball been released with only the era appropriate songs it would have been something like

crystal ball

dream factory

last heart

sexual suicide

good love

crucial

make ur mama happy

movie star

and THAT would have been a hit record .. last heart would have been the lead single .. good love could win over all the soccer moms .. and the other tunes are wierd enough to make all the critics and superfans happy
