Exodus or New Power Soul. They're not funky in the way most people want them to be though [Edited 10/25/14 5:46am]

Out of curiosity, what do you mean by this? I know a lot of people don't like NPS (I do) but Exodus is hard to argue with as a funk album.

.

Come to think of it, Prince hasn't ever really done a full funk album, has he? The Black Album is closest, wall to wall, but it always felt too...I dunno...synthetic or something. There's some thick shit on it for sure (Bob George, RHIAFP, Dead On It, LeGrind) but a few songs get lost in the drum programing (Cindy C., 2 Nigs, SuperFunkaCali) and are missing something on the bottom end, while "When 2 R in Love" doesn't fit on the album at ALL. I like The Black Album but I wish it were more organic sounding. I guess that's why I prefer Exodus. Sounds like a real band is playing it.

.

Someone should start a thread: Prince: The Funk and list 12-15 quintessential Prince funk tracks. It's probably been /done bt it'd be fun to see everyone's different choices.

I suppose what I mean is more or less what you said. Those two albums are pretty straight up funk, but of the type that prince was peddling in the late 90's, not the stuff he was doing now and then in the 80's. People would love a funk album of songs like Controversy, but that album is not Controversy. What Time is It? is fairly close though, but it doesn't have Prince singing...
