Not even close. I like AOA, but comparing it to Lovesexy is like saying Lotus Flow3r is the Purple Rain of the 2000's. Lovesexy is a landmark album to me...Lotus is actually close to being a classic to me, and to me, my favorite post 1990 album...but more like 9th or 10th out of his 30 or so albums... where Purple Rain is in my top 2. AOA, I haven't ranked, but it is probably well below 20...but ahead of MPLSsound... which is not much

Now if you're talking themes....AOA is pretty much nonsense. The futuristic crap in Clouds and Way Back Home, with "Mr Nelson, you've been put to sleep, we ordered Waffle House for you.." I could care less about that. His pandering to young listeners with Auto-Tune and that stupid loud horn sound effect that is almost as overdone as Police Sirens in rap songs is awful....Art Official Cage is a good song with a bit too much over trendy modern crap in it...This Could Be Us is really nice...U Know is actually a good song after you get past the Auto Tune, but it's being there is really annoying...so it's a mixed album for me. I like every single Prince album, even the worst ones, but AOA just can't be compared to Lovesexy in any way, shape, or form. Too much pandering to young people...and an old guy trying to sound young is no better than an old guy sounding too old...see Sting and John Mellencamp for that...great artists...who can no longer rock.

I have to confess that for the life of me I will never understand how people ever get any enjoyment out of anything if they can't let go of endless comparisons? Is it just for the sake of conversation?

AOA is Prince's 21st century AOA as far as I'm concerned. Some amount of comparison is inevitable I guess, and that's all well and good... but at what point can an album stand on it's own merits?

And I don't worship at the altar of Lovesexy either....it's one of my least favorites.

AOA is nearer the 21st century New Power Soul than Lovesexy.

Lovesexy is massively overrated. AOA is a much better album. Having said that AOA clearly isn't the full on spiritual affair Lovesexy is.

Some people like to discuss things. I didn't agree with it at all, but it's fine to discuss. Other people don't like to analyze anything. Some people have wide ranging opinions, some have no opinons.

I think the way this works, is if you see a thread you want to comment on, you give your opinion on it. If you see something that looks silly, you move on. Or, you can say you think it's silly to have opinions and do comparisons. That's called a message board.

I consider Lovesexy a classic, for sure. It will be interesting to see what we're all saying about AOA in another 5-10 years.

I'm a longtime fan, I've got feelings about records. And I've got this theory that at this point in his life, Prince is sort of patterning when he gets artistically ambitious, and not necessarily about any other element than structure and the emotions he's trying to elicit with his music.

It would not cross my mind to say AOA is as great as Lovesexy. Those who believe that need to wait for a bit of time to pass. I did say that for Prince, AOA was more experimental, may have overstated that, but still feel AOA is a greater departure for him (no matter the end resultsw).

Yet I can't help but have this impression that Prince somehow crossed Lovesexy and 1999 and divided it by the 21st Century Sound, the Art Official Sound.

Lovesexy for the rebirth and elegiac tone, the heartfelt regret mixed with vague spirituality and some odes to earthly pleasures. What was lovesexy anyway?

1999 because of the electronic, studio wizard feel.

21st Century Sound because Prince needed an update to his studio sound, and his appreciation of current musical trends.

Or I'm just a bit weird or something. No one here can take issue, because you're all weird for sticking around anyway. wink

I love both albums and I do get where the comparison comes from, but I wouldn't say that AOA is a continuation of Lovesexy in any way. Lovesexy is less cryptic and makes a definite statement, whereas AOA (to me anyway) suggests he's searching again. God was focal point of Lovesexy, dude even name drops Jesus, but the theme of AOA is 'enlightenment' and a focus on the self. Now had AOA came out before Lovesexy I would have made this comparison between the two albums. I do love them both though!
