Let’s Go Crazy: Prince and the Making of Purple Rain

Prince has been back in the spotlight as of late, following some electric, live performances and the news that he is releasing two albums this fall, Plectrumelectrum and Art Official Age. 2014 also marks the 30th anniversary of Prince’s Purple Rain —the song, album and film.

Celebrated journalist and steady Relix contributor Alan Light recently completed a new book that explores Prince’s initial multimedia efforts. Let’s Go Crazy: Prince and the Making of Purple Rain is set for publication by Atria Books in December. We are proud to feature an excerpt from the forthcoming work, which focuses on his songwriting.

BTW why isn't the news about this book worthy of a sticky plus front page mention? Seems to me this book is a lot more interesting than the pathetic Facebook Q&A.

.

Page about the book @ the publisher. (Atria Books is an imprint of Simon & Schuster.)

.

[Updated the title since they've now published the excerpt.]

The excerpt is now available @ https://lists.relix.com/a...urple_rain but there seem to be SSL issues.

.

This excerpt discusses the recording of new music after Prince had "handed over a huge batch of songs" to Albert Magnoli, especially the genesis of "Purple Rain". I don't think there's any new information there, it seems to be a compilation of all that is known. The "Stevie Nicks got a demo of PR" is also in there; Alan Light hasn't examined her claim at all and simply accepts it as the truth.

.

Other songs are discussed, like "Computer Blue", "Electric Intercourse", "Baby I’m a Star", "I Would Die 4 U", but there is really very little information.
