Per usual, many hardcore fans don't actually appreciate Prince's greatness. While we piss and moan and argue, the rest of the world was blown away:

Well, it wasn't all that... certainly not like his last SNL appearance, nor the Jimmy Fallon 'Screwdriver/Bambi' performance, which I can watch a thousand times.

.

I just think that it was too much... should've eliminated 'Clouds' from the set. Also, Prince's energy level was noticably low and he seemed a bit distracted. It happens... to all of us.

Prince's performance as always was outstanding. Prince always gives it his all and it is always incredible to watch. Can never fault Prince the musician. Ever.

Now Clouds? It started out flat. Now I do not like anything about AOA, but sounded slightly better live without the cheesy production.
After he starts to rock out it immediately got better and better.

Me being a proud African American MAN. Eye felt having a virtual all black comedian SnL, Just because Chris Rock hosted & prince was musical guest was VERY racist! It was too in your face. Plus the skits seemed lacking in preparation..It was an embarrassment to watch.

But loved Chris Rock's monologue! Bring on the stand up tour!

eye will ALWAYS think of prince like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. eye mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that prince wasn't of this earth, eye would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. prince

I'm not a hater or negative....DAMN, I'm a huge fan of the Musicology-20Ten period with all it's ups and downs!! I love AOA album, great and nice Prince songs and vibe but I guess the whole production and promotion also has something to do with it...some songs on previous albums weren't bad either.Anyway, I hate the 3rd eye girl stuff and now he sounds like C&D live sad If he tours I hope he brings NPG and NOT 3rdEyeGirl! And yes, cut your hair!!!

Thought the performance was okay overall, just not "amazing". Liked AnotherLove as the last song. Lol. I thought you were saying he sounded like a CD live. I was going to answer that the reason for that is that there HAD to be precorded tracks for this. Not all of it, but clearly some of it. There's one point where Prince is singing lead and his voice is also the backing vocal. I know this is par for the course in this day and age of "live" performances.

I thought the 8-minute jam was going to be in addition to other performances (at least one other song).

Haven't even seen the performance yet, although I'm looking forward to it... The guy plays live and suddenly everyone is a composer/producer/camera angle/sound technician/blah blah blah frigging expert. Get the hell over yourselves people.... Just sayin..

I have had functioning eyes and ears for several years and that is all i need to say there were issues other than a lack luster performance and boring songs.... he chose to play songs most people have never heard (ones that I have heard once if at all) and I do not think it will generate much interest in new material. It did not make me any more interested in getting the albums.

If there is a PR delu x set in the works he blew a bigger chance to do a song such as "electric" and say "from the forthcoming Purple Rain anniversary edition" (what I would have done is put in voucher codes in each of the 2 albums that could be used to get a discount or early bird PR30. Something to give us some reason to get them.)

that is if there is even a PR30?

The performance was neither good or bad. For me, I miss the MPLS sound. I think any credible musician/band could have played those songs on SNL and sound exactly the same. His live performances are becoming to generic, which is leading to disappointment. Yeah, he's prince...and I want him to be Prince. He's watered down the MPLS sound so much, that our ears are having a hard time excepting this new direction. Bland or not?

I think his former manager says it best.

"Alan Leeds: Sometimes less is more.
Prince on SNL - I fully realize I'm opening up a can of worms here, will probably regret saying this tomorrow, but I'm so disappointed by someone who has so much more to offer than mixed agendas that get in the way of his usually brilliant music.
I love his lifelong devotion to promoting women in rock but the appearance on SNL proved only that a girl band can play clichΓ©s, the talented Lianne La Havas can be under-utilized and Prince is no Alice Smith. In trivializing Smith's song has Prince embraced Alice's right to cover one of HIS songs? File this appearance under trying to do too much and ending up not doing much at all. Many, many years ago Prince asked me why he wasn't taken more seriously as a musician and I suggested he leave the bells and whistles home and tour in jeans and turtleneck, placing all the focus on the music. He sarcastically replied, "what? And look like you?". Back then he was probably right and I was naΓ―ve. BUT two decades later and two decades older, I would suggest the same thing. Leave the costumes and cartoon logos to the kids and give the music the mature respect it deserves. A shame.....a master lowering the bar is never fun to watch."

except remember many of us have seen or heard many many of hours of concert and live performances... so to say this one was lack luster is not trolling but just being honest. Of his tv spots this is one of the low points for me. It did not make me want to check out the albums it did not make me want to watch it again. Granted I am spoiled but the fact is this was not his best appearance.

So to call us trolls just because we did not like it...ironic?

I was worried that Prince might do a Purple Rain medley, so was thrilled that all four songs were from the new albums. I loved it! He did two of my favorites: "Clouds" and "AnotherLove". I thought the whole medley was tight and worked really well. I loved the guitar solo tradeoff betwen Donna and Prince at the end of "AnotherLove". Lianne La Havas was great, too.

In short, it was just what I'd been hoping for.

I skimmed a few comments here before posting and they seemed negative. *Shrug* I will read more in a minute, but I do feel like this site has more than its fair share of people who won't be pleased by anything Prince does. I am guessing last night's performamce won over a lot of new fans and thrilled most of Prince's fan base.

I'm not sure what this has to do with the quality of the performance. I don't think anyone is saying Prince doesn't have the right to showcase his 3rd Eye Girl proteges. He can do what he wants. But the level of performance and musicianship is noticeably compromised from what Prince fans have come to expect. They have a right to be disappointed.

The press, lol? How naive. A-list doesn't get bad press unless they really do something extreme, like dangle a baby. I dare you to locate even ONE mainstream article critical of a Prince performance album, song or whatever in the last 15 years. They just parrot the general parameters of whatever press release they received.

In comparison to the press the contributors to this site has been heralding Princes career demise for almost 2 decades. Neither source is an accurate barometer when the same opinion is rehashed, reheated and served up ad naseum with every tour, CD, tv appearance, magazine feature etc. Being a fan of an artist doesn't make you an expert. It means you bought some CDs.

The press isn't stating any opinion at all. They are there to promote. That's it. They are generating hype and click bait, which is fine. Fans, on the other hand, if they don't like something, will say it. I didn't even say anything bad, I liked the performance, and you are coming after me, lol biggrin

I'm glad I read the reviews on here first...made the performance all that much better since I wasn't expecting much. I actually liked it. Thank you, Prince for playing new songs instead of the usual medley / hits. I really appreciate that and loved the song choices. I've said it and I will keep saying it --- lose the fro. It's not becoming of you. All in all, I'm glad I watched your performance. ..thanks again!!!

Totally agree with you about the "Fro".. Its GOT to GO..

and I was very happy too that he played NEW stuff.. I mean I LOVE his older stuff... but how many times can you hear "lets go crazy" and "purple rain" before it is too much..

I'm not really sure what to make of that. I think I'd have much preferred to see an entire rendition of Clouds, complete with the rapping, talking, and nice guitar guitar solo at the end, and a totally separate performance of Another Love. That way he could have shown the two personalities in a more complete and concise fashion.

It's one thing when I know those songs already, but I could not help but wonder what people who didn't know any of those songs thought of hearing little clips that don't really ever repeat.

I got the sense watching that that time is running out on 3rdEyeGirl

Lets HOPE time is running out on them!!! (( and the Fro ))

Not true... TRUE Fans can dislike some of his stuff..

Just cause your a TRUE "huge" Fan doesn't mean you have to LOVE every single thing he has done.. I've been a fan since 1980... I have spent tons of $$ on him.. TONS of time Seen TONS of performances.... etc etc etc................. But I do not like all he does.

This performance was NOT Polished by ANY standards and I AM in the Music "know"....

I have studied music, sang music and loved music since I was old enough to talk..

Its just so sad that People are afraid to admit when Prince doesn't do A+ work.

I think the show was ok... not great.. not horrible...

The choices of songs were ok.. nice to hear new stuff.. but it all seemed rushed and thrown together to me...

Just because a person doesn't LOVE EVERYTHING about Prince.. doesn't mean they are a TROLL or NOT a huge fan... Sheesh

there is a weird reaction where people take it personal if someone else dosn't like something? I wish Prince still had it. Maybe he does maybe he is just so good that I do not get it? But I do not think so. But it is not personal.
