Best non album tracks 2004 - 2014

Hey, over the last 10 years, what have been the best three Prince songs that have not been on a Prince album?

I'm going with:

FUNK (2007)

Turn Me Loose (2008)

Screwdriver (remix) (2013)

A special mention has to go to Give Em What they Love on the Janelle Monae album.

Any thoughts by anyone else?

Extra Loveable 2011 is my baby. Even better played back to back with the instrumental remix which makes a good extended portion! It's fresh, happy and sexy, it's everything that made me love prince's music in the first place! The 2013 version is alright too, but lost some of its synthfunk energy by being too polished IMHO.

.

San Jose Jam (the extended portion of SST) was a killer, too, I listened to it to death back them.

.

Screwdriver is another fave of mine, true raw energy, happy and silly, I was in love on the first listen. Should have been on Plectrumelectrum, it has the same teenage energy as Pretzelbodylogoc and Fixurlifeup save it's much better IMHO.

.

Live Out Loud intrigued and inspired me a lot at the time: I was just at the end, then getting out of depression, I needed those kind of lyrics and it was a different, surprising prince song!

.

Ain't Gonna Miss U When U're Gone reminded me of some 1987-88 extravanganzas such as Sticky Wicked, a hell of a weird funk masterpiece IMHO.

.

No Light In A Large Room 2009: as with Extraloveable I actually love it more than the original outtake, it's delicate and elegant, it made my day when released! I would have loved a smooth jazz album in that mood with Renato, John and Rhonda to complement the funk of mplsound, the rock of lotusflow3r and the electric storm of Elixer!

.

Fallinlove2nite: I'm not so convinced by Josh' radio-friendly elements but behind it I read a gorgeous, glamorous pop song that reminds me of Splash, with those magnificent (and cruelly edited) strings arrangement. I'd love to hear a version without Josh and with the full strings arrangements! Anyway the released version shoulda been on AOA instead of this awful remix of (the otherwise brilliant in its original form) Funknroll. I tried to replace the later by Fallinlove2nite, it fits perfectly in the tracklist!

.

The Song Of The Heart: Oh boy did I love this one back then! It's cute as hell, a perfect pop song in a way!

San Jose Jam is based on DMSR, not SST. SST didn't even exist when the show this is from happened.

There's also the cool live only funk rock song Check the Record, performed at the Dakota early last year.

Would love to hear a good studio version of that one.

Are you talking "The everlasting now"? If so, that was on the Rainbow Children CD and on the One Night Alone....live box set.

F.U.N.K (aka Pfunk) has to be the best non-album track in the last decade. Someone REALLY needs to piss Prince off BAD again!

I am still wading my way through a bootleg called the Lotusbox (Mostly 2008/10 outtakes and demos) though as well.

It has great versions of All along the watchtower, Disco jellyfish an In a large room with no light. These are quite funky.

Looking at these lists, I'm shocked by how many holes I need to fill in my own collection. Especially all those live releases. And Love (acoustic)? How did I miss that? Fuck!

who said i didn't like prince? that dipshit mindflux who makes up garbage .. i just like good prince .. i find the generic club mixes far more interesting than the generic prince originals .. in fact i enjoy the simplicity much more than prince over padding his songs with excess noises they don't need .. the above mentioned remixes are far far better than the originals and make a pretty good art official album since most of the good songs on that record use generic club mix tricks anyway .. and u are gonna tell me the guitar on the stripped down mix is generic .. its pretty great .. i wish prince would play like that more often on his own albums .. but he doesn't .. he is much more safe and boring on guitar on record these days ..
