Why is this important? I genuinely don't understand.

Promotion is for the kids, for the people who have to be spoonfed what new music product to listen to... you have the albums, which are the artist's definitive statement, who cares what promotion is around them? And if Prince is known for doing this, why are you surprised?

In ten years, you'll either still be listening to the new albums, or you won't, nobody will give a rat's ass whether or not Prince appeared on a cheesy TV show or made a cheesy video. He will go on making music his way as he has always done. I'm baffled as to people's indignant response to the promotion for the albums.

If you like the music, listen to it. No-one should be caring how he is represented in the wider media/pop world, surely?

It matters because the number of people buying his music is shrinking. At some point there will not be enough to justify releasing anything. And then we, the remianing remnants, will not get anymore new music. We will just be left with tours packed with "the hits" for ever more.

56,000 copies of AOA sold in the first week. That right there is the number of his hardcore fan base still prepared to buy his music. Without promotion, that will be pretty much it for sales. The man will not get out of bed for that kind of return. So why bother next time?

U may be right but that's because prince is a spoiled superstar. People like John Zorn, Bill Laswell or Buckethead release between half a dozen and a dozen albums a year (more in the case of Buckethead, who's literally gone mad for the last 2 years, releasing an album a week or so) and I doubt they sell more than 56,000 copies of each not in the first week but at all. It doesn't prevent them to release records nor does it make their releases unprofitable, even with such moderate sales figures. If prince behaved like the independent artist he claims to be since 1996, he'd release 6 albums a year and he'd be happy with his 100,000 copies of each album. The problem is that he still reasons in terms of major superstar.

If he ever learns how to run a proper, fully functinal, organized and dedicated website, he can eliminate this problem (assuming there is one). Prince has sort of become a cult artist, underground if you will, and a lot of that is due to his own behavior. He seems to want it that way. Until he doesn't. I think he needs to embrace the model that other lesser selling bands but who have a dedicated fan base have used (Pearl Jam, The Dead, Rush, Radiohead, Phish, Widespread Panic, etc.) and just give the fans what they want (live shows, vault material, new songs) for a fair value. That last part is important. He fucks up every website he touches.

.

Cry me a river for Prince and his decreasing revenue from selling CD's and downloads. Dude needs a different set of custom made clothes to wear every day for crying out loud. Maybe he could cut back on that a bit. Prince seems to enjoy doing what he wants but seems to dislike it when his ever decreasing fan base does the same. He could make all the money he needs by simply treating us the way he wants to be treated.

I agree but I'd like it if the Org could be just that, too neutral

We're not allowed. One wrong step and we'll get sued. One link to an awesome YouTube video or a kickass download and we get snipped because Prince is a dick. This is what I'm talking about. Provide the fans what they're looking for and we'll get shut DOWN with the quickness. Yet there's an obvious hunger and market for new, live and vault material that for one reason reason or another Prince won't give us. At least those of us that still remain and give a shit.

.

There. I said "shit". Now I'm outside Prince's world and unworthy of handing him my money because I cursed. Dirty Mind, 1999, Controversy never happened, Prince. Nope. No cuss words on the records that made you famous. Dude has not only alienated his primary fan base but anyone who ever wanted to do business with him in the first place because he is and always has been a colossal pain in the ass to deal with.

.

TL/DR: Prince is solely responsible for his slow sales and I don't give a shit one way or the other.

What I meant by that is we have about 10 threads about the same thing on the front page all the time (usually BS), weekly threads being created to repeat what had been said in the thread from the week before and so on (usually BS, too), and waaaay too many people here with emotional, if not mental issues that should be maybe not banned but at least "controlled". I used to think the mods were too strict a few years back, now I realize I was wrong because it seems recently they kinda gave up on trying to control the insanity and look at what's happening!
