I would just fire the whole movie. Put it in an old oil drum and torch the fucker into oblivion.

I would also fire the song GB. That is the worst song, 2nd only to Purple & Gold, to ever come out of Prince's head.

And my final task of execution would be to fire myself for having actually watched GB, and listened to the song GB more than once.

The soundstage. This movie is so lifeless with its incessant indoor scenes - even the ones which are supposed to portray outdoor scenes. I understand production costs had to be cut, but come on. That movie is damn near claustrophobic.

Also, there's the little matter of the acting hehe.

The Tick Tick Bang dance is my favourite scene

Not to mention the Glam Slam neon, this giant mono-testicled yellow pointed shaft which would not make it on Reeperbahn Straße, or any red-light district on earth for that matter.

I can see the pre-production meetings:

— OK, let's go for the big mono-balled dick/male-symbol.
— Let's make it yellow!
— Yeah!

But the Oscar goes to the director of photography, which was evidently daltonian in the first degree, given the horrendous palette of colours that stain the screen from start to finish.

That year The Time's Pandemonium album puts most of the Graffiti Bridge album 2 shame with the exception of the obvious standouts:

Actually, I'd say the cinematography was excellent, matching the gritty grainy feel of Purple Rain and Sign o' The Times and going very cinematic on the framing, focus, and camera movement. Prince has always carefully picked talanted DP's for his movies. He couldn't get Martin Scorsese to direct Under The Cherry Moon so he nabbed his cinematographer. This time he hired Bill Butler.

It was the artificial theatrical set design and the costumes that didn't work so well with that gritty cinematic style. Just look at the bridge itself!

But nothing sunk it like the non functional plot and dead characters.

I would have fired Prince, of course.

The Time were gearing up for a on-the-road documentary that would have certainly been far more interesting than anything Prince could have conjoured up.

I see what you mean, I'm not discussing the technical prowess, Prince is demanding on that and usually gets what he wants.

But this is almost a child-like response to Moonwalker.

Suddenly in the eighties the music industry thought it could replicate the "Come see Elvis at the movies and make us more bucks". And Prince started it alright with PR.

Given the inflated egos of the artists, it was not hard to convince them and thus we were given :
— Rattle and Hum (meh),
— Sign Of The Times (I wouldn't mind a deluxe DVD edition with REAL-TIME CONSOLE OUTPUT, thank you)
— Moonwalker (pass the bong, Bob)
— In Bed With Madonna (it ages pretty decently with its spiraling Warhol approach, and the "Like a Virgin" performance is top notch)

— etc.

What I mean is that I would have taken the cartoonish approach to Graffiti Bridge.
He wanted to do a modern West Side Story. West Side Story has very sharp edges, level curves are pretty edgy, and this strong picture contrast defines more the "light against darkness epic fight" he had in mind. I don't mean something as radical as Sin City, but... a cartoon-like contrast and saturation. I would have paid more tribute to the live performances. GB is very badly edited.

It would have been something entirely different if they took the near-future approach. Obviously Prince wanted to defeat greed and capitalism, but they should have exagerate the point, not refrain from it. GB could have been so much fun... And here's Prince whining about Thieves in The Temple and how Warner, Bankers, and managers that get in the way are mean to him. Fun's over!

Moreover, main female character exsudes sex like a low-budget fridge (amongst countless other casting/production problems).

Problem is, Prince was still on his spiritual epiphany, persuaded his music could only be Funk'n'Gospel from now on.
And probably disappointed and bitter that America would buy his play around a childhood morning cartoon made in 2 weeks in Paris, instead of Lovesexy which he thought was the best thing he'd ever done to that point in his career. Mainly because of him, being a star, and being conscious of his influence amongst his audience.

Lovesexy is without a doubt his "coming to age" record.
The album and state of mind that made him grow not only musically, but mostly on a personal level, because he fought the post-Revolution depression phase, because he fought the frustration of the aborted "the-whole-market-is-mine" projects (Dream Factory, 5 disc SOTT, Camille, The Black Album).

I'll tell you what: Prince was right to piss on Warner the way he did during all these years. He never forgave them not to play ball. And I agree, it would have be so much fun to have a 1988 year à la Beatles, with a record every 3 moths, and I think he honestly wouldn't have give a shit about charts. The whole multi-record was supposed to be fun and a way to show the world how much Gemini he feels.

But I digress...

So he tried to be the fun preacher.
Problem is, James Brown in "The Blues Brothers" is a more fun preacher.

It's funny The Time was interviewed on the Donnie Williams show a couple of months before the Graffiti Bridge premiere in the fall and Donnie asked about the film. Jimmy Jam made a comment saying all I can say is we had nothing to do with the editing it was all Prince.

You could tell right there none of The Time believed in the film or thought it would do well.

The movie was horrible, the soundrack could've been amazing instead was filled with crap songs.
