The Future

With the "ressurgance" of Prince in the last few months with the two new albums being released, Art Official Age and Plectrum Electrum both debuting in the TOP 10. The current projects like NPG Jazz album that's rumoured, a possible tour, recent collabs with Rita Orta and Kendrick Lamar, as well as the long awaited Purple Rain remastered release... 2014 is turning out to be an active year for Prince.

Many can argue his commercial and creative peak with the exception of (The Gold Experience) was the 1992 Love Symbol album. In the 80's Prince's created some of the most breataking albums in Pop music history as well as his commercial success selling over 50 million albums world wide just in that decade.

With massive sellers like:

Purple Rain: 20m+

Batman: 7m+

Diamonds and Pearls 6m+

1999 6m+

By the end of his Love Symbol album, at the time sold over 2 million worldwide, to this day it has been reported of selling close to 5 million copies... His out put of contract album fillers such as The Black Album, Come, The Gold Experience, Chaos and Disorder, etc... Never really were commercial albums, barely reaching Gold status. With the exception of TGE his creative output on those albums were nothing compared to his "prime" in the 80s. His recent "comback" with Musicology bringing him back in the mainstream, the album, the grammys, rock and roll hall of fame, the tours, the superbowl performance etc... Along with "subpar" albums in my opinion such as 3121, Planet Earth, LotusFlower and 20Ten as well as smaller scale tours such as the Coming 2 America tour. What does the future hold for Prince?

The legacy? The new albums, which I thought AOA was a much better album than all of his recent albums in the past 7 years... What can you the fans excpect? What do you want to expect? Will Prince's legacy diminish with the new age of social media, how his videos and tours are not on YouTube, how he is not active like every other artist on social media? Or are we simply appreciating the fact that over 36 years he is still making music for us fans and putting out albums for us to enjoy?

Just a thought because I feel 2015 is going to be a big year for Prince.

TGE was very commercial. It was Purple Rain 2. The release was just delayed too long, and then everything became about pissing on WB at any opportunity.

With the exception of TGE his creative output on those albums were nothing compared to his "prime" in the 80s.

The Black album was recorded in the 80's

His creativity around the mid 90's was arguably better than ever. He had (in his mind) a REAL cause to fight for, and it shows in his music he had a point to prove and was able to. The majority of the tracks on both Come and C&D were all recorded around the same time as the songs on TGE - IIRC originally intended to be a triple CD. So in terms of creativity it was very high. Although I'd very much agree that both Come and Chaos were deliberately intended to sound inaccessible (and they didn't sell well).

His recent "comback" with Musicology bringing him back in the mainstream, the album, the grammys, rock and roll hall of fame, the tours, the superbowl performance etc... If he continues to work with up and comers I think he'll score some hits with them. He is much very much positioning himself as a teacher, and why not. He knows the game, and has a huge recording complex he can offer, in return he gets to steal ideas from them creatively inspired.
