Return of the analog synths?

Synth on the new album sound very fat ,warm and fuzzy.

Do you think Prince is using the real thing or is it some virtuel synths?

Bass synth sounds fat on some of the tracks, very Moogy! But for example the rest of the synths in The Gold Standard (like the synth stabs at the beginning) sound quite thin and digital to my ears. He might have used a mix of digital and analog synths?

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

He's used that type of bass synth sounds also on MPLSound and 20Ten, I've noted that before. It could be analog, it could be digital emulation of analog. I'm quite familiar with the sound of the Moog Voyager due to having used it for years, but in all honesty I couldn't really tell the difference between that one and something like the Minimonsta software in a mix. The older analog synths are easier to detect, but if you soak the entire mix in reverb and use a lot of compression etc. it won't be so easy to tell then either.

There's plenty of fizzy high-end on the synths used on the album. Even if there were analog synths used on it, the overall result is just digital-sounding and excessively processed. All that stuff that relies on a wide stereo image is hardly what I associate with what is considered to be charming about analog synths.

There are some Juno like patches on some songs, but they sound more like emulation to me. I could be wrong.

lol

You might be right. That's a lot of patches to choose from, of course, but I wouldn't be surprised.
