He's more than relevant, he's that fuckin dude, just watch how chart topping youngsters behave around him. They know what it takes, and they know deep down when it comes to raw talent and application they aren't in his area code. Millinials are not stupid, both of my grown up kids are not trying to get the new Prince albums this month...but they know theres a difference between what they like now and what he is.

To some he is not relevant, but then a lot of other musicians and fans believe he is. It's all who you ask. He's not rolling in the latest trend so of course they won't view him as relevant. Madonna, U2, Bruce, Aerosmith, Stones, Metallica and Neil Diamond to name a few. They are all legendary acts whom sell out arenas but don't get the radio airplay. But truth be told they are all relevant.

"Prince" the brand is IRRELIVANT in contemporary pop music. That cannot be disputed. He hasn't had a hit song in 20 odd years. My god how he's tried.

As a musician/live attaction he's far from irrelivant. He can still sell out shows. But nobody is there for the NEW music. (or at least very few are).

There are people out there buying records and in their lifetime they've never heard a Prince song in the top 10. He might as well be a new act to them. He has a cult following these days. It's not big enough to get a single into the charts. His albums stay around for a week or so then quickly fall off the charts.

The whole "it's not about the charts" rhetoric is true. However Prince is clearly trying to score a hit. HE is aiming for the charts, there are reports of conversations, he even proudly declares his previous success in the charts during his shows! - So while the charts offer no insight into an album as a piece of art. They do offer an insight into the current contemporary music culture. A landscape Prince is not a part of.

out of curiosity... in what way are U2, Bruce, Aerosmith, Stones, Metallica, and ...Neil Diamond? hmm more relevant than Princey?

.

The only way I can think so is that people automatically hype those groups as rock legends whereas they look at Prince as more of a pop star (which translates to a degrading look)

I wasn't saying they were more relevent. I was stating they are all legendary acts that some might say weren't relevant. Do I think he is relevant? Hell yeah. I was just playing devils advocate here.

I personally believe he is relevant. I was talking about how some like the writer of this article don't think so.

P and Madonna are now in the same catagory as The Rolling Stones.

They release new material that only a few purchase, but would fill stadiums whenever on tour, and the crowds would expect nothing but the hits.

.

I dont criticize them for releasing new albums, as this is the only thing they know how to.

But sometimes you just wish they would retire gracefully. biggrin

Prince could not sell out stadiums right now...if he could, he'd be doing it and dancing all the way to the bank. Anyone remember the LA residency? If Madonna or MJ said, "I'm playing 20 nights at the LA Forum!" regardless of ticket prices, EVERY night would be sold out immediately....and there would be just as many 16-25 year olds in the audience as the people that grew up 80s. Not so for Prince...and it's his own damned fault. I wont go so far to call him irelevant, but he is not on that level (even though he damn sure should be).

Prince did a straight 21 nights in London and all nights were sold out.

Yup...and he had a nice run at MSG in New York, but not every show was a sellout. His LA residency was cut short because the tix were not selling, not to mention the short, west coast tour he did with 3EG in 2013. Played very small venues, and did not sell out every show. Would never happen to Madonna or MJ, regardless of ticket prices. I'm not hating on the man and i wish things were otherwise, but the truth is the truth...he is not on that level. Should be, but he aint.

V10LETBLUES

No one likes anyone speaking I'll of their idols (we know that too well here) but the review is spot on.

Stuck in a rut? Check

U Know sounds like Prince is stepping out of his stale and moldy comfort zone? Check

The albums really do cement the long standing reality that Prince, when it comes to new music is irrelevant. His new albums are atrocious. So the reviewer is only stating what Prince fans (not fams) know so well.

when the guy wrote that the breakdown was a rehash of adore, you knew he hadnt a clue what he was talking about

I agree totally. whoever it is, is talking through his hat. doesn't have clue No. 1. and the way he dismissed chaos and disorder as a breezy summer record, it's laughable. I don't think he's ever heard it in full. no need to discuss this horseshit. lock. My advice? Know your music first to make your opinion matter.
