So? There is nothing wrong with that. Even as a teenager when they were both released, there are songs I didn't like and to this day still skip. The varying opinions are one of things I like about this place.

Nothing anyone says about the music makes me like or hate it. It is a personal experience. It's sad that people take those opinions as a personal affront to Prince.

Sorry, no. If something like Purple Rain was released today things will be different, it's enduring in every way, maybe if some songs off SOTT were released (that I usually skip) then I wouldn't say the same, but if Prince released anything off Purple Rain today, say, I Would Die 4 U, I'll completely listen to it everyday, unlike the bullshit he publishes on Soundcloud. Motherfuck today's Prince.

I agree but that's not the point. The point is to create yet another thread to complain about the complainers.

This type of thread draws trolls because they know that their comments irk you guys.

I would say the same thing about Purple Rain (the album) that I did in 1984: Apollonia can't sign worth a damn and she ruins Take Me With You.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

True, and I read mediocre reviews of Sign way back when. It's not my favorite album, never has been.

But I don't think the new stuff compares, sorry. It's different now. Back then, you had interesting ideas with more minimal arrangements. Now you have more lush arrangements of totally uninteresting songs.

They would be rightly considered as old school crap because 2014 needs different music than 1984 or 1987!

I prefer to call them "polished turds." nod

I don't think they're all terrible songs, but definintely a much higher percentage, yes

It's interesting that all of a sudden we're having a bunch of "prince fans r over & done threads" in a reaction to the weekly "prince is over & done" thread.

.

So yeah, many prince fans are over and done, they haven't said an interesting thing about prince and his music since 1995, they keep rehashing the same shit over and over, they're surrounding themselves with minions and avoid naysayers, they're only a shadow of the people they used to be and they'll never have a successful thread again (they haven't had one since the days of CompuServe). Actually I think prince fans needed a label such as Warner to keep them in focus: ever since prince has left WB, his fans have said nothing but crap.

Did Parade and SOTT get some bad reviews? Sure -- some in a sea of praise. Hell, Parade was album of the year in NME and SOTT was labeled a masterpiece almost instantly. Those albums sold by the truckloads, the singles were hits, videos were events, tours were legendary...

.

It's like claming that Pixar's Cars movies or some of its recent output is still pretty good, because not all of Pixar's movies got 100% at Rotten Tomatoes, utterly ignoring that the two Cars movies got significantly lower scores than most Pixar movies, or that their recent ones are approx. 75% compared with 95% usually: http://sumitdutta.wordpre...gic-touch/ .

Totally disagree because when Purple Rain (film and album) was released, I was deep in 'indie' land in the UK and John Peel, arbiter of all coolness even to the NME, had publicly condemned 'this Prince thing'.
This made want to check out what it was he was objecting to (because I'd liked Dirty Mind which had been 'indie NME cool') and I chose a wet Wednesday to go into my local cinema with a definite attitude of 'this is going to be crap, then'.

Well.....

I came out into the street and started looking for others who thought this thing was the greatest thing since the last greatest thing and, frankly, there weren't too many of us about.
But by SOTT, people were passing the cassette round and saying 'I don't know what to make of this. It's pretty good but... it's no Around The World In A Day'

So even SOTT didn't come 'approved' but there were few who hadn't declared it a masterpiece after three plays.

So, I'm afraid that the three strikes rule applies and sadly Prince has been out for a while with every game.

3121 definitely scored big with me no matter what anybody was saying. It got over 20 plays on my deck getting better with each, before I stopped listening to it (still haven't been back) but there's no way I could get the others into that kind of frame so the complaints are one thing (isn't the internet just a big whinge box anyway?) but the quality/interest is another and, well, it doesn't make him a bad poyson, but he hasn't been getting em in the net.

Still listenin' though! And it's been really gratifying belatedly introducing *serious music* fans to 'The Rainbow Children' with great success in the past few years, remembering it as another great example of an album whose greatness was completely missed on release.

I don't think recent forays are going to fall into that category but it's perhaps the 'album template' that is worn out at this stage, requiring duplicates of previous placeholders etc etc.

I can see how hard it is for some of the 'legacy' artists to break their own mould but I've no doubt that Prince will do it spectacularly one of these days. He's still only a youngster.
