Prince's voice sounds weak on record now

listening to "Clouds" and "Breakfast can wait" makes me think his voice dosen'T really sound all that great on record anymore. his voice has deteriorated imo and that's normal with age but just saying it ain't the same anymore

not true at all, maybe there is a slight change in timbre of his voice but he still is a great singer

there's definitely a change.. which i'm not used to. Dude is starting to sound like Jack Splash of Plantlife..

Maybe the change in his voice explains the direction he's taking with this album which is more club oriented. He even got Hannah Ford singing some of the songs on the 3rdeyegirl album. He seems aware of that change and adjusting..

Listening to him live this year proves it otherwise.

x2. He killed it vocally both in Oakland & SF Fillmore. Go as far to say it's maybe the best I've heard from him & I've been to many shows.

I'm not sure how it sounds live i'm specifically talking about how it sounds on recorded songs. Even his vocal delivery on "Breakdown" pales in comparision to how it sounds on "Future soul song"..

I Completely agree. I've been saying it for years. All of the touring, & getting up there in age. His vocal are definitely lacking nowadays.

At the Manchester show, Feb 22nd and at the Leeds show, May 23rd, his voice was impressive enough to make me, and many others who were also there, make a point of commenting on it.

I agree with the others on this thread; it's the way the songs are mixed in the recordings. His voice is seriously impressive live these days.

All singers lose the power of their voice as they get older. We can't expect Prince to sound exactly like he did in 1982 wink

Can't you see that that is an artistic choice?

Effects and mastering can greatly paper over observations like yours but he didn't chose to do so, obviously.

Of course we can debate whether it was a good choice, or even if he realised it as a choice at all.

I think he sounds divine, as always

He still has many more years of great singing left in him

When his voice changes, he'll deal with it then I'm sure

Roger Daltrey singing at the Super Bowl with the Who is a better example of a singer who has lost his former glory. Robert Plant can't sing like he used to, but his music has changed and he isn't trying to be the Led Zeppelin monster he once was, and that's just fine. What's the deal on this site? One bitchfest thread after another. People need to get a life seriously.

Vocally, his voice was peobably the best it's ever been at the recent Paris show.

Eh, it doesn't really sound any different on record now than what it sounded like 10-15 years ago. On some songs when he's performing live he's had some problems, I think. I have to admit that some of those youtube clips he's posted I have not enjoyed listening to because he's sounded so hoarse.

Are you commenting on what I posted above you? I was commenting myself on the live vocals.

In any case, I think the fans here are in denial if they think he's still singing as well live as he did during his best days as a live performer. He doesn't seem to be able to control the dynamics during some songs and he often sounds too monotonous when he sings some of the more melodic pieces. He also seems to resort to singing in a "punky" manner a lot these days (which is something he did in the early-90s too and that certainly wasn't to everyone's taste).
