I think on cd and maybe even his gigs (although they still remain unbeatable) there's been nothing of note or difference for such a long time that, personally, I have to refer back to his old stuff. The last 7 or 8 years have been really nondescript in terms of a career. I realised today that, even with all his albums on my player in the car, I'm skipping track after track after track because they've been played to death

lol I have the same experience, I have just listened to his music too much, I suppose.

As a songwriter and studio musician, Prince is finished, at least until we have some evidence to the contrary.

I agree very much with this, although I thought that This Could Be Us sounded like some good old Prince music again, just like some of the tunes on 20Ten. Not shockingly good or very surprising, but just good new songs that at least sound like "Prince" made them.

The thrill is gone... while he still has some moments of brilliance, when we listen to the variety of his 80s catalogue we are often blown away because he was just so out of this world. Oh well - my expectations of Prince have changed in recent years. I do not expect him to write anything as wicked as Annastesia or freaky as Head or memorable as I wanna Be Your Lover or anything as strange as Little Red Corvette or lyrics as cool as Raspberry Beret.

I will continue checking for what he does next but am not holding my breath that he will return to brilliance when in reality he no longer has a sound of his own like he did in his hey day! Fortunately, we still have all of that music and the bootlegs from between 78 and i'd say 94 or so.

J

Agreed , I have had to change my expectations too, I am now happy with a well written song that is not too cheesy and doesn't have cringe worthy lyrics.

There's a certain progress in the weekly "prince is over and done" thread becoming a "Is prince over and done?", so I'm going to encourage this.

I haven't been able to say this in a long time, but Prince has become exciting to me again. It could be all the parties at Paisley Park and him becoming more accessible again. Hearing unreleased songs before anyone else, impromptu shows, etc. Before last year, I would have agreed with most of the negative comments.

He has not become boring, it is our expectations that have changed. Aside from coming out with a viking death metal album, I am not sure what else he can do, he has pretty much done it all and come full circle many times over.

I thought Prince has over first during the Graffiti Bridge era.. then in 1993 I swore he was COMPLETELY done with the release of GoldNigga.. and again later in the 90's during Emancipation/Chaos & Disorder era... then again in the 00's during the NPG Music Club Chocolate Invasion/Slaughterhouse days.. and again with Planet Earth.. Calling Prince "done", "over" and a has-been is kind of passe to me now. And I've actually quite enjoyed the 2009-Present era musically. In these years (if we exclude Purple & Gold insofar as it wasn't composed to be a real song, but a sports fight-song type of thing) he hasn't released anything that I've really thought was really bad.

Change it one more time..

I'm only really into new material. All these reworkings are okay but I'm after an album and some cashcow remasters. Don't care what he releases as long as I can buy it physically.
As for recent albums, I've enjoyed 2010 and LF/MPLSOUND. I even really liked RnRLA and his recent 3EG stuff. Thought Breakfast was dull but I'm used to him releasing material I find dull so it doesn't bother me.
But as for pushing music forward? He's old and has done that. The baton is being carried by younger, hungrier artists now. And that's how it should be and always will be. He took it for his generation and now it's the turn of the next. Music, as life, is always moving and changing, always building on the old and creating new.
But just release that bloody album Prince. It's not the holy frickin grail wink

Rock andnroll love affair totally surprised me. It seemed to have a whole Neil Diamond vibe. And then the Kimmel performance, made the Neil diamond thing worse. It looked and sounded like a cross between Neil diamond and prince. It seem intentional as well....and somehow...through all of that... I STILL friggin love the song.
And even MORE surprising and engaging to me was this songs contrast to Screwdriver(remix)...like really?!?!?! That's the same fuckin dude? His ability to create STRONG efforts in such diverse styles and approaches still astounds me and is my most exciting and favorite aspect of his career too me.

Then theres fixurlifeup. A fail(a huge one) in my book...but still...an entirely different sound to the point I think then poor guy has a slight case of dissociative identity disorder (multiple personality). Still waiting, a beautiful night and endorphins machine all written by the same person....it appears to have mental illness written all over it to me.

Nobody here could have seen "Screwdriver" coming.

When that clip of him performing it with what appeared to be an all-girl band appeared people here definitely seemed surprised by him doing something like that at that point.

Well, the irony of what I’m going to write won’t be lost on many, considering I’ve taken to an Internet message board to discuss Prince during the wee hours of the night. So, he must be pretty interesting to me based just on that. But, here goes….

Yes, Prince is boring. For several reasons now.

  1. His sexuality. Prince as a public figure worked best when he was presumed to be gay, bi, or at least bi-curious. Whether one agrees or not, a scan of his lyrics from 1992 backwards on his official albums ad bootlegs are so ambitious and suggestive, that’s its impossible to not see some gender and orientation play there. Now, we really don’t get any of that—which, to many fans is an indication of his undisputed heterosexuality, while to the rest of us just makes the closet-case look more repressed. Either way, it’s become played.
  2. Album themes. Never Prince’s strong suit, it was still interesting when he explored ideas like LoveSexy (the blending of divine inspiration with carnal lust and an attempt to reconcile the two), or Camille (again, gender play with sexually charged energy). Unfortunately, his more recent concepts, like the self-proclaimed controversial Rainbow Children really come off as pedantic rambling conspiracy theory nonsense, while Planet Earth and 20Ten seem to have a shell of a conceptual framework, but at closer inspection just end up being insubstantial talking points. Listening to Prince today sounds like listening to a mind stuck in the 20s, but fancies itself an old sage—underserved and unwarranted preachiness.
  3. The Music. How many times have we heard Future Baby Momma or Call My Name? These are songs Prince has recycled since his youth. During a recent interview, Prince expressed his frustration with WB that he finally had a coherent message he wanted to release—if the leaked tracks are any indication, I hardly think so. I don’t expect everything Prince does to be astounding, but from a musician of his abilities, can’t at least 10% of it be? I haven’t heard anything since The Rainbow Children that was impressive, and I don’t even like TRC.
  4. His interviews. Prince, stop giving them. You don’t answer questions. You don’t reveal anything interesting. Just don’t do them. And, like Howard Stern said, you get talked to like a space alien—because you act like one.
  5. Promised vs. delivered goods. We’ve all been burned.

I could go on for days, but the combination of so many factors adds up to a 56 year old man who seems to have emotionally not evolved a bit, surrounding himself with youthful people who won’t backtalk him, and managers who won’t second guess him, and people who won’t challenge him. You end up with paint-by-numbers Prince. So, yeah. Boring.

Some of it is, some of it isn't. Pretzelbodylogic was okay, but not so great that I can't live without it. My point is that whether his new music is good or not, he still keeps us interested. And even if Prince does things we find frustrating, like closing down a website, we're all over this site voicing our opinions. So that's my answer to funkaholic's question: say whatever you want about the guy, but he surely is not boring.

I think the larger irony of this thread is to consider Prince "boring" when even when he hasn't put out an album in 4 years he consistently gives people something to talk about. Many of you may not like who he's become and the org may only talk about him for negative reasons these days, but there's absolutely nothing boring about the man. A person as naturally eccentric as Prince could never be boring. 98% of the musicians that have a public eccentric personality (the Gaga's, Marilyn Mansons of the world) are in real life boring. I enjoy following Prince even when I don't like his current music, just for the rollercoaster ride aspect of it all.

Change it one more time..

This summation doesn't sound boring. I surmises the actions of some one who's up to a lot of stuff, It's just stuff u and many others don't like. I unno...I could be wrong.

But on a side note...is hitting the nail in the head similar to twisting the driver into the screw? Yes...no? The latter brings mushrooms and flowers to mind... Lol.
