Musicology is a little average I agree,

However Prince was the most succesful artist in 2004,

>> the succesful tour made him the top-money-maker of that year, even ahead of Madonna, Elton John, Metallica!

according Rolling Stone:

The Most Overhyped Albums Ever!

THE COMEBACK OVERHYPE MACHINE

Prince, Musicology (2004)

After changing his name from "Slave" to an unpronounceable symbol and making more than a few questionable albums (The Rainbow Children, anyone?), the world was ready for a solid Prince album. So even though he never really went away (the three years between albums was the longest in his career), Musicology was billed as his great return, an album that brought him back to his Purple Rain greatness. An album to make everyone remember that Prince is the greatest musician on the face of the planet. And on and on and on...

My verdict? It's a heck of a lot better than most of his '90s output, but it's no masterpiece. And Pitchfork agreed, calling Prince a "drastic underachiever" and the title track a "bad Lenny Kravitz throwaway" in its negative review. "

It's Yahoo, purveyor of cheerful processed news, all seemingly edited by Reader's Digest rejects.

One could take the wording of the phrase "After changing his name from "Slave" to an unpronounceable symbol and making more than a few questionable albums (The Rainbow Children, anyone?)" as implying that TRC was recorded during the Symbol years, but the article doesn't directly state it. Regardless, I think most people outside of the fan community wouldn't really be bothered enough to ensure they were using the correct appellation. TBH, neither can I, dude was clearly Prince, no matter what silly thing he insisted on calling himself.
