Bruno Mars is nowhere near Prince and that is not to demean Bruno though he is the closest thing we have to him and he'd be even closer (but still far and away) to being the next Prince if music wasn't so corporate and sanitized these days. Give Bruno complete creative control and I guarantee something great.

I've been saying that in this thread and in others about Bruno. He's definitely doing what he's told for now. I like his output that he's done so far but I'm sure when he's completely behind the wheel, it will be amazing. I'm glad he's in the game right now because I had been struggling a bit to like music lately because it was all sounding like autotune crap.

I think at some point, Prince will come around, even if it's only letting Bruno get a sandwich with him or something!

And you're also forgetting the fact that the original plan was to have a boy band with Andre Gouche & Robert Bruner (I assume since he still has Andre around that he may still be considering some variation on that idea).
1. It's ANDREW Gouché, not ANDRE. 2. It's RONALD Bruner Jr., not ROBERT. 3. It was never intended to be a strcitly "boy band" as Cassandra O'Neal was to have been the keyboardist.

thanks for the name corrections... i was typing quickly when i point that. My point in bringing Bruner and Gouche up wasn't to exclude Cassandra but to counter the assumption that Prince is only interesting in working with women.

Change it one more time..

I think people notice it more when Prince collaborates with a female artist but yes, as you said, he collaborates with men as well so I'm not sure where this notion that he only works with women is coming from. I'm pretty sure Prince was hearing industry buzz about Bruno circa 2010 but even back then, we never heard Prince utter one word about Bruno. Even though Prince was always talking about the importance of having real music, real instruments, looking to the "Golden Age" of music (as he said on George Lopez) for inspiration and Bruno does all of that. According to the video that someone posted with the interview that Janelle and Bruno did on MTV, it's clear that Bruno has been asking/begging Janelle to bring him along to the lovefest/party that Prince invites Janelle to from time to time but for some reason, Bruno ain't invited.....

And I notice people complaining about how Bruno is simply great at creating sufficiently modernized versions of old school music and that he's not breaking any new ground; so what? Not every single artist needs to be groundbreaking, they just have to make good music and Bruno showed he could put together a solid album with Unorthodox Jukebox. Honestly, all Bruno has to do is continue down the UJ path of remaking old genres and he'll be fine. As a young old soul, I find nothing wrong with that and it seems people in general are gravitating more and more to old school sounding music if not straight up old school music because they are tired of being subjected to the largely lifeless, uninspired, bland, and insipid music that plagues the radio and almost every other mainstream format these days; even more casual music listeners seem to be tiring of today's homogenous style(s) of music. Just look at the charts from last year and the style of music a number of artists are doing in their songs now. #OldSchool

I agree, Motown! I don't think Bruno is going to have the same output for every single album but I think his sound is refreshing because autotune, drab sounding stuff was dominating the airwaves for a long time, sadly.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Prince appear to follow trends for his first two albums before he had his own unique sound? Truth be told, "I Wanna Be Your Lover" was/is a disco song! Right? Prince didn't really get "weird" on us until ATWID. Prince's appearance and persona have always been eccentric but I don't know if his first few albums were groundbreaking in that regard.

I really can't understand why Prince won't even mention Bruno's name, especially since Bruno and Janelle seem to be similar. Bruno brought back the "real instruments, real music" vibe back to mainstream music. Isn't that what Prince said he wanted?

You're right, Prince's first 2 albums weren't really that much different from most other disco albums out at the time and Prince had yet to truly make a mark on the music scene. I don't think he became musically groundbreaking until 1999 though he was starting to make a name for himself with Dirty Mind mainly through the raw, sexual image he was portraying that eventually led to his Sex God persona. I highly doubt Bruno is going that route and I hope he doesn't. I doubt it even more that he'll be given the freedom and creative control that Prince was blessed enough to receive during the happier times in music when Prince's career was just beginning though I would love to be proven wrong.

I understand where you're coming from on Prince and Bruno though I'm afraid I can't elaborate on that myself outside of joining in on your curiosity based on ehat I've come to understand on here.

I've often wondered how Prince was able to get so much control of everything so early on. Does anyone know? lol

I also agree with you that Bruno will probably be more controlled by his label than Prince ever was. Bruno's uncanny ability to appeal to multi-generations of folks is something that the record company will cling onto tightly. That's for sure. All of Bruno's counterparts in music right now typically appeal to just one particular demographic. I follow Bruno on social media and was checking out fan photos. It was amazing to see fans that were as young as 4 all the way up to folks that appeared to be in their 50s and 60s. That's incredibly rare and I don't remember the last new artist that was able to pull that off.

Good point. I haven't really paid attention to that but you're right. Bruno definitely has multi-demographic appeal; nowhere near the level of MJ but multi-demographic appeal nevertheless. If only his label would let loose and give him the chance to do his own thing then we just might have something good on our hands. If not, that's fine too; I'll just continue listening to 60s-90s music like I always do <img src=" />

I don't know exactly when it happened with Prince, but it seemed like he was never a teeny-booper kind of artist. It seems that he always had a relatively older crowd. Of course the younger audience that Prince had was probably because they had siblings or parents that listened to his music.

As far as Bruno goes, I think he's almost at the same level of MJ in terms of having a diverse audience. I think he's got the most diverse audience of any of the young artists out there at the moment. I think he'll take (more) charge sooner or later. He's still very new, so he's got a bit of a ways to go. It was just unprecedented for an artist with only two albums to land the Super Bowl gig but he really tore it up there! If nothing else, maybe Prince is annoyed that he was in the game 30 years before getting the Super Bowl gig wink

Totally! I sometimes wonder how Bruno would react if Prince ever invited him over to a jam session with him. I wonder if he would be able to keep it together and rock out with Prince or if he would totally lose it and freak out or have a meltdown or turn into the biggest fanboy lol But those two jamming together would freakin rock! OMG the epic-ness of it all, can you just imagine? eek

My vote is Bruno has a meltdown and then plants a tongue kiss on Prince lol wink

Um! I think not 17!

No way would he do that lol! And can you imagine what Prince would do if he tried? It wouldnt be pretty lol

Oh, I would love to be a fly on the wall if that were to ever happen wink I think Bruno would be besides himself if he ever had the chance to meet Prince and I'm sure he would be gushing if he had the chance to kiss Prince as well. Remember that joke Jaime Foxx said about how looking at Prince in his eyes made him gay for a few seconds? lol Maybe this is why Prince is avoiding Bruno, perhaps Bruno has already been sending love letters to Paisley Park biggrin
