Bingeing... thoughts on Prince addiction

binge

noun
1. a period or bout, usually brief, of excessive indulgence, as in eating, drinking alcoholic beverages, etc.; spree.
verb (used without object), binged, bing·ing or binge·ing.
2. to have a binge: to binge on junk food.
Origin:
1850–55; dial. (Lincolnshire) binge to soak

bing·er, noun

1. bender, blast, jag, tear, bust, toot; orgy.
I've been on a Prince binge today. I'm going through my 200g + collection and revisiting some songs, many of which I had completely forgot existed. This particular binge started with reading that article in the Current, and I just had to look up Taja Sevelle's rendition of Wouldn't U Love 2 Love Me. Now it's three hours later and I have been consumed chasing down obscure Prince songs for other artists, b-sides, remixes, etc. I feel totally guilty as I would after any binge, it was quite an all consuming journey for a few hours there. Now I have lost that time, and will never get it back. I have kind of a shaky feeling now, like I'm going through a Prince hangover, lol. I know this would probably sound totally loony to anyone on the street, but I feel safe sharing this here on this forum. I am sure many here share my affliction, and have had similar experiences of their own. This is hardly my first Prince binge, I have had many episodes in the past. As I look back now on my life, Prince has been an addiction much like other people would be addicted to drugs or alcohol. I have spent so much time, money, and energy pursuing this addiction, that I wonder what I might have accomplished had I chose to do something else with my life. Just for full disclosure, I have done many other wonderful things with my life, it's just that the Prince thing has bordered on an unhealthy pattern, and I am wondering if anyone else here has thoughts on this? Do we need a 12 Step support group? I think I'm going to run my own intervention now, and take a walk in the rain, cleanse my thoughts and get some fresh air.

I probably overstated the analogy, my Prince addiction is definitely nothing at all compared to drug or alcohol addiction. I wouldn't liken it to the hellish existence of most real addicts, it's an absolutely beautiful thing to be a Prince "addict". He's put out so much music that I can get totally lost for hours grooving one song to the next. As much as people complain on this forum, there is such an overwhelming amount of good music that balances the big picture. Griping about new material he puts out these days is trivial, imho, he can release whatever he wants foe the rest of his life, it is just gravy for me. Today's post on YouTube is such a prime example, it reaffirms why we love his music and why the music endures all these years.

I look forward to being a Prince addict the rest of my days cool
