Crystal Ball is the ultimate Prince song to me. It has it all, great music that goes in all directions, great playing by Prince and lovely orchestration by Clare Fisher. And perfect lyrics about sex and religion and the end of times. This song is Prince at his best.

-

Others great examples are The Rainbow Children song (except the somewhat whacky lyrics maybe) and When Doves Cry.

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

Rainbow Children plagiarizes an old blues song, though. I can't remember who it was, an old dude like Muddy Waters or BB King, but one day in 2002 I arrived at a party and I hear a song which has exactly the same groove that RC, but EXACTLY. I asked who it was and they told me but I forgot even though I was familiar with the name of this bluesman.

Okay so are you saying I can't share my opinion now? Should I be forced by your unstable overreaction to stop typing responsive thoughts in the part marked response? I was just responding to add debate and thought on a discussion board. Just don't post if you are insecure. My God...

Whatever dude...all im saying is dont talk down on others opinions...Get the stick out of your ass.

I think it's quite obvious to everyone you're the one talking down and condemning an opinion. You are even issuing commands to do this or that.

I wrote a simple counterpoint to a thought made by Stimpy, not a put down to anyone, not with any mean tone.

I said (about the song "Purple Rain"): "Doesn't show what he's very famous for: danceable music with inventive beats that's what blew up with 1999 the album."

And you responded: "Okay so are you saying we cant share our opinions now? Should I be forced to type what you want me to? Just state your seperate song or album if it doesnt agree with mine. My God....."

You're freaking out like you have a redwood tree stuck up your rectum with the leaves coming out of your mouth forcing your head up, so you have to look down.

To get back on topic, I'll define (for me at least) what is meant by "the full depth of the man's talent"

1. Catchy melodic pop hooks

2. Innovative arrangements

3. One man band workflow

4. Strong, memorable lyrics and chorus

5. Original but also very engaging and pop friendly dance beats

6. Ability to cut through what is popular with something different and then make that popular (the ability to "catch lightening in a bottle")

I'd say a good fit is "When Doves Cry"

But... this doesn't include his ability to include dramatic solos on a guitar.

Maybe then it would be "Little Red Corvette"

Believe me, I love Prince's underground stuff, I was listening to "All My Dreams" and what was then called "Expert Lover" AKA "Crystal Ball" back in 1989. But... I think #6 is also a valid talent. Shit, I love the song "3121" as another creative tour-de-force in my book.

If you discount #6 and possibly #1, I do think "Crystal Ball" is an excellent example of his artistic talent. It's got the ktichen sink, the cat (literally), and much more thrown in.

Hmmmm well ufoclub if i did each of those 6 points individually...itd look sumthin like this....

1. Catchy melodic pop hooks - The Most Beautiful Girl In The World & Love

2. Innovative arrangements - Crystal Ball, If I Was Ur Girlfriend, 3121 & All My Dreams

3. One man band workflow - How Come You Dont Call Me Anymore, A Million Days etc...

4. Strong, memorable lyrics and chorus - Adore, Dolphin, Darlin Nikki etc...

5. Original but also very engaging and pop friendly dance beats - I Would Die 4 U, Kiss, Pop Life etc...

6. Ability to cut through what is popular with something different and then make that popular - Pussy Control.....(strange choice ano....but it is a feminist song clevery disguised as generic rap.....and is extremley popular amongst non P fans....even tho it was never a single)

Well that little list helped me pick my choice. KISS. That's got it all. It's cathy, memorable, different yet popular, innovate (no bass), dancable, distinctive, and to top it all off it was a MASSIVE hit. The fact it's Prince's most enduring song (it get's more airplay than anyother song of his) is a testament to how good it is.

I got two sides... and they're both friends.

True! Of course we all have heard the inside story that the song concept in it's full length form was not Prince's. He made a one verse single acoustic guitar demo and then when he heard the full song created by Masarati, he re-arranged it, remixed it and put his own lead vocals on... so the story goes. So that kind of eats away a bit at #3. But maybe that's not important in the bigger picture. In fact, maybe that's part of his skill.

This is certainly a unique Prince gem!

So many votes for CB. This song deserved to be so much more than being just the title song of an outtake compilation album!

Catchy pop/rock/funk song that goes into a direction of almost Jazz when the bass line changes and he's playing piano ....then ends with him giving an awesome guitar solo and showing his bandleader skills at the final close....

You can't sum up Prince in one song, there's Prince the rock ballader, the funky, the mysterious, the lover..

Darlin Nikki, for example, shows Prince's guitar work, his sexual persona among many characters and personas he portrays, his vocals (from low notes to crazy high screaming notes), his psychedelic aspect (the end)

Prince's funkyness shows best in Kiss: high pitch vocals, funky instruments, funky lyrics.. the whole thing, or Play in The Sunshine.

The rock ballader: Purple Rain, or The Beautiful Ones... or anything mid tempo, mellow, slow with a guitar solo at the end.

the lover: Adore, If I Was Your Girlfriend....

There's even the folk ballader: Sometimes It Snows In April...
