That pretty much sums it up. Makes perfect sense.

Nope, I doubt it. It's some fans who just don't embrace Prince's soul/r&b side that seem to gave a problem with certain band members. The NPG minus 3eye, are a mixture of funk, pop, r&b, soul, blues-rock, blues, etc., that mixture goes over well eveyywhere. Prince would be foolish to pigeon-hole himself with just the 3rdeye trio. 3rdeye doesn't appeal to his larger fan base, like when he sold out arenas over the last 7 years, with recent NPG band members in place, especially with certain drummers on board.

It's a catch 22

Prince is constantly trying 'to move on and do something new' but he keeps going back to give the regular crowed pleaser show. If he is going to push this new direction [This is really about Prince, not the women in the band] -Prince is pushing this because it is his desire and need.

If Prince wants to promote something new/new album new direction. He has to take that leap of faith and do it. Back in the 1980s no matter what audience or show Prince did Prince(current material promotion)

3rd Eye Girl is doing a mixture of songs too, and People who will come to the Essence show love rock n roll too. [remember most rap/hip hop is consumed by white americans] At that award show a few years ago where there was the tribute to Prince the crowd went crazy when Janelle did a full on rendition of Let's Go Crazy.

For the third time, the general ticket buying public cares less than a damn who's standing beside/behind Prince. lol Don't overestimate the importance of your opinion.

Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

I always thought that the name "New Power Generation" had to do with his fight for Artist Rights and his Fight for his Masters Back.

>Power 2 the Artist/Musicians, not the Record Company Execs.

NPG & prince are symbols of the cause, and always will be... nod

Congratulations Prince!

The NPG term goes back 2 1988, became a song in 1990 and a band name in 1991. The WB wars didn't start before early 1993 so no, it's unrelated.

Congratulations Prince!

I always thought that it came about with a change of sound, band and direction. Ie the new generation of band members playing a new kind of power soul/funk. And that transition started with Lovesexy. However, once Emancipation landed, there wasnt really anything new in the funk and soul going forward making the NPG name a bit redundant. He should have dropped it after TGE.

.

I liked it when he started using 3EG as his band name. It was an odd name, but new and refreshing. It would be nice if he completely changed the name of his full band. Something quirky, a little bit different but representative of where he is musically (wherever the fuck that might be).

It's finally a new concept, after all those years. And that's what I expect from artists, new concepts.

Agree with you. The 3eye trio could have been any musician(s) backing Prince, so I agree that this trio backing band isn't about that trio, but more about the spotlight being more on Prince. He could change that trio tomorrow, hire new, younger or established musicians,do a show, and the spotlight will still be about Prince. I don't know why some fans act like that trio gave Prince his music skills, when he had his music skills/talent long before he hired them. lol
