Yeah, he just makes it all up as he goes along. Jeez.

Interesting story from a Prince girlfriend once who said that he practiced all day on a piano riff so that it could sound spontaneous for a group of Execs the following day. Don't believe the hype.

.

.

Are you answering something you wish I said? I didn't. PR was not a spontaneous jam.

Songs are sometimes formed outside the studio. That doesn't suggest they're not written, arranged, rehearsed, and edited later.

I believe PR had no demo .. the PR version of PR was taken from the benefit concert which had more verses .. point being that it was still getting worked out ..

.

Why? There exist longer versions of plenty of songs, it is entirely possible a longer studio version of PR exists.

.

.

Possibly.

.

I also recall prince saying he does not 'demo' anything and once it is recorded that is generally the final product save a few edits or remixing or mastering ..

.

Except the Kiss demo exists and is on boots. I also recall other stories about P coming into the studio with a piano demo of a song and then using that as a guide to record the actual song. (Wasn't that in that "Prince In The Studio" book?)

I suppose there is this:

Piano Rehearsal : 1983

3. 17 Days 4. Purple Rain 5. A Case Of You 6. Mary Don't You Weep 7. Strange Relationship 8. International Lover 9. Wednesday / Let Me Tell You What I Might Do 10. Cold Coffee And Cocaine 11. Mama

The wooh is on the one!

Look, even BVH forgot about the studio version of The Bird. Gotta cut some slack to journalists who are not so into the deep details of Prince's catalog.

.

There's a difference between forgetting a concrete example of a live track replacing a studio version and not knowing about the Camille album. Sheesh, Bream WROTE A BOOK about P that is still the best source for most of the pre-fame information.

.

It took Bream a week to come up with this weak shit, whilst there are numerous threads here containing far more in-depth info. Hell, a visit to PrinceVault would have provided him with plenty of info.

.

Also gotta love your defending him on the base that this article was for non-fans. Since when is that an excuse for sloppy reporting? Oh, and if it was for non-fans, why mention a Jill Jones track that isn't even in the movie whilst pretending not to know anything about the Camille album?

Despite all your put downs and announcing forever that Prince slipped into irrelevance, you still live in a Prince-centric world where someone like Bream should not "take a week" to write an article on his catalog and had better know most of what is in the various bios and discographies.

I took his Camille comment to mean he's not 100% sure the whole shelved project was actually in a high pitched female voice, though it's assumed to be. Hey maybe Bream didn't dutifully collect as many boots as some people here, maybe it's been a while since he gave a hoot about the vault, maybe he's getting old and has health problems -- who knows?

I'm pleased you think he should have run to his computer to feverishly type a four page comprehensive overview with lots of sidenotes the minute the Warners deal was announced.

Yeah, I must be nuts to expect that a journalist who has specialized in Prince and ONCE WROTE A BOOK ABOUT HIM needs to come up with an article that isn't bland and at times bafflingly uninformed.

Yeah, it's not like just about every bloody song was officially released, and the one that wasn't has been circulating on bootlegs for 15+ years.

Hey maybe Bream didn't dutifully collect as many boots as some people here, maybe it's been a while since he gave a hoot about the vault, maybe he's getting old and has health problems -- who knows?

So then why bother to write an article? Othe rthna showing off that he can call some former employees to get a nonsensical quote?

I'm pleased you think he should have run to his computer to feverishly type a four page comprehensive overview with lots of sidenotes the minute the Warners deal was announced.

Making shit up once again. Congrats!

I've also been wary of Nicks' story. Let's face it, she isn't exactly a reliable witness, just look at the dozens of varying accounts WRT how "Stand Back" came to be.

except that stevie nicks description of the PR demo sounds exactly like the 83 rehearsal of the song which contains different lyrics than PR .. sounds about right to me .. could even be the same rehearsal tape

I haven't been aware of many contradicting accounts of Prince's involvment with "Stand Back". Every story I seem to have read or heard her tell in an interview seems to be the same sequence of events. Was there something that didn't add up?

I think it's the most realistic expectation. It's one recording pretty much everyone mentions, and it's resurfaced with cleaner audio pretty recently. I think it's a no brainer that whoeever gets Prince's ear, will advise him to use that show. It's all solid, so he doesn't have to think too much about it. Real question will be how much of it, and if we only get audio. He's got to string us along somehow.

I think the bikini underwear bit might prevent us from getting that footage. I'd be surprised if he let that out.

Hopefully, you're not as cranky now that Prince has announced a tour. I liked Bream's article and appreciate his contribution over the years, I'm not going to barf all over his article because he may have made a mistake about Camille or taken too long to publish too little this one time. I tok the Camille comment to be speculation on how we may not know everything there is to know about the vault or planned album configurations, then I went about my day.

The studio version of THE BIRD really isn't a demo of the song. The studio version was recorded months after the live version was created. That said, Prince did have a history of the occasional demo for some of his songs. Early versions of various songs were recorded on piano and brought into the studio, or even on his personal cassette recorder (KISS was a great example of that).

Purple Rain was taught to the band while it was a rough idea. "“Purple Rain was just a work in progress' according to Matt Fink, 'when Prince came in with it one day to rehearsal, with the chord progression and most of the lyrics done. He had the melody and the lyric, but he was still tweaking it when he came to the band to work out the rhythm parts."

He also explained that 'Prince had come in with the chordal progression on guitar, and they said ‘Let’s jam on this, and each of you come up with your own parts.’

Wendy has also gone on record about this. "Prince came in with the melody and the words and an idea of what the verses were life. I came up with the opening chords, and everybody started playing their parts.”

I hope that solves that mystery.

Over his career, most of what he recorded was created in the studio, but he did have some demos for some of his tracks.

(parts of this are from an early draft of PRINCE: The Studio Sessions book)

The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/
