Sleep Around is one of all time favorites, JOTY was a good opener and Get Yo Groove On was a great live choice

Never really got the love for Sleep Around. It's not really catchy and it just goes on and on and on.... although I do like the funky wah guitar in the instrumental bit.

I don't think Prince's heart was into it (Emancipation) anymore by the time the tour rolled around, With all the drama surrounding the birth of his son happening simultaneously with the album's release, disapointment over CD sales, and distribution troubles with EMI America, he just wasn't feeling the album and songs anymore (my guess).

Prince does have a notoriously short attention span when it comes to promoting his own material. The idea of a promotional campaign that would last 2-3 years (he said it himself) was iffy. No, make that laughable ("there are 18 singles on this album"). Ya know?

But he did tour...lots, and the next year too. Probably as a way of (not) dealing with the stress in his personal life. Once again, just guesses on my part.

Disc one always seemed to me to be the weakest, idk, I think that Prince does generic ballads and generic electro-funk (discs two and three respectively) better than he does generic RnB. The real exception for me is In This Bed I Scream which honestly I associate more with disc two since it seems too good to been on the first one.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Prince has always been like two different people to me.. even as a kid I thought he was trying tot hard to be harcore with the rapping and it just never worked for me. Still doesn't. There are some songs with the raps I can tolerate (MNIP, SMF), and some songs the rap part just ruins it for me (Da Da Da, Space) And then there are the songs that make my brain hurt trying to understand why Wally was deleted yet these were worth hearing (Facedown, Jughead, ect)

I can totally understand Da Da Da, I spent quite a while with Audacity the other week trying to cut out the first two minutes or so of rap so that it doesn't ruin the rest of the song, which I actually like. I gave up in the end though, it was too hard.

As far as I am aware, the album version of Space doesn't really have a rap, although Boris' edit on The Dawn 4.1 does, which suprised me when I first heard it (I assume it's from one of the maxi-single edits or maybe Crystal Ball. But yeah, the worst raps are when they spoil what was a perfectly decent song, the worst culprit for me being Love 2 The Nine's. Seriously, that song would probably be the best thing on The Symbol Album if it didn't become awful half-way through. Has anyone attempted to edit that?

Strangely that bit never really bothered me that much, I guess it's because it generally fits in with the laid back nature of the song and doesn't represent a total sea change in the song's atmosphere like the rap in Love 2 The Nine's. The mincing of the word "head" to rhyme with "understand" is pretty noticable though, I think a lot of people hear "hand" (which is pretty funny if you think about what it means, although it renders it rather tautological.)

So many of the songs dealing with the theme of him becoming a father was probably one reason. Another was most likely that at the time he realized that he's better off playing the older favourites live again to be able to attract larger audiences. I think that, in general, around that time artists started moving away from the type of "you must play almost every new track from the latest album on the current tour" mindset.

Okay yeah, lets bump Space for Love 2 the 9's. That one irritates me so much I'd forgotten about it. It's like he closed his eyes, dropped it in the track and said, "Yea that'll work".. it doesn't fit at all, which is aggravating because that's another song that was good without it.
