What ridiculous questions could you ask to confirm if someone's a hardcore fan?

That one's is pretty ridiculous. If they even think about suggesting something, they probably are.

But why exactly does it say "metallic gigolo" on the single? Is there a story behind this?

In the Philippines they wrote Metallic Gigolo under the title. I don't know why? lol

Some looking suggests it was some sort of Filipino dance craze (maybe a dance contest thing that expanded) in the early 80s. I'm not really clear on the assorted references I've found Googling. Based around a song by Change called "Paradise" which was eventually retitled to include "Metallic Gigolo" in the Phillipines. references to another song involved called "Try It Out" by Gino Soccio. The dance is connected to something called the WEA Dancers, who I assume are associated with WEA Records, as there was apparently an album (unclear on whether it was promo or commercial) called "Metallic Gigolo" with several tracks, though I haven't found a listing. I wonder if maybe WEA included "Head" on that release as well (as I've said, I can't find a description of the full release), but clearly they meant for it to be incorporated as another track in the Metallic Gigolo genre for DJ sets or the like.

If anyone knows more, please share. I'm just try to piece this together.

Yes, it was a dance in the Phillipines. And yep, "Head" was on the Metallic Gigolo compilation. They wrote it on the single release for marketing purposes.

Instant disqualifications

1. Person says I love all the songs on Purple Rain, does he have any other albums

2. Is he still a symbol

3. He's just got to be gay

4. I really love the song about Doves crying.

My degrees of Hardcore fan dom.

-1 - Negative hater, person who hates Prince and believes all the rumours hes gay, woman like and has no talent/a symbol - a complete dickhead

0 - Bullshit artist, says they like Prince and names a Michael Jackson or Terence Trent Darby song (I have met people like this).

0 - Not applicable - Person has not heard of or doesn't care for Prince, but not openly hostile

0/1 - Listener - knows Purple Rain or any hit of it and thinks Prince begins and ends there.

1A Super casual - Knows less than 5 songs and they are all the following , 1999, LRC, WDC, Purple Rain, Kiss, Raspberry Beret, Cream. Has no albums at all.

1B Club Casual - Owns Purple Rain and likes a few songs, maybe a hits album

1C Casual Plus - May own Diamonds and Pearls or one other album from the 1982 - 1992 period as well. Has at least one greatest hits album

2A - Fannette - A person who owns under 5 albums from between 1999 and Lovesymbol. May be eager for more

2B - Minor Fan - Owns between 3 and 10 albums, one to three may be from 1977 -1981 or post 1993, knows a few songs, may have a book or two or even been to a Prince concert on own volition.

2C - Fan with Ambition - As above but may say they are more, or very eager to improve, usually likely to have most golden period (1999 - LS) albums and a few others

3A - Good fan, has most albums, a few singles, books, may even post on org. Still has other artists they like as much or more, but clearly loves Prince.

3B - Superfan, Has nearly if not all the studio release albums, reaching into unreleased bootlegs, has several books, videos and other paraphernalia, posts on org, can be us.

3C Fan with a Prince love - Has 95% of Princes official output and looking for more, quotes Prince lyrics, loves Prince, but still sane. Still theres room for improvement and the purple kool aid sits on a shelf.

4 - Hardcore - A true hardcore fan, aims to own every Prince music recording, has protege stuff, most books, vids and merchandise, seeks dead format releases avidly (Me) flies overseas to see him, goes to Prince fan parties (Most of us are here). Purple Kool Aid is drunk regularly.

5 - Obsessed (Devotee) - As above, but whole life is Prince, wants to own every note he recorded down his farts on tape. Thinks their life is a mirror for Prince, has a Prince shrine, just going too far at times. Sheets in your house are purple, Prince is on most surfaces, you have a purple house and one or more animals/plants/stuffed animals with Prince related names. But harmless and a totally cool funky cat.

6 - Stalker - Truly disturbing, Prince has a order against you and Paisley Park staff have been ordered to shoot on site, lifetime ban from Prince concerts lol lol Like the chick who jumped on stage and danced with Prince that time.

7 - Zelaira and Tame (Older Orgers will know who these people are)

No way are levels above 5 meant to be serious, just some Friday night humour!!!!

What track number do you press on the remote to play Alphabet Street on the original Lovesexy cd?

What connection is there between Prince and Michael J. Fox besides the fact they are both so short?

How do you correctly pronounce his Symbol?

Note: I exclude from "hardcore" Prince fans those who are pathological enough to know how the hell Head got "Metallic Gigolo" on the label, since it would make being way clinically obsessive compulsive a requirement for being considered hardcore.

the same 1 i push for Anna Stesia (unless you are suggesting that if I do not have the tracked CD I am not worthy.)

I remember reading it but I do not know...

How do you correctly pronounce his Symbol?

"Thaaawaaaummp" (at least according to "2 Whom it May Concern")

Note: I exclude from "hardcore" Prince fans those who are pathological enough to know how the hell Head got "Metallic Gigolo" on the label, since it would make being way clinically obsessive compulsive a requirement for being considered hardcore.

There is nothing necessarily pathological about that: what about the tyop on the If I Was Your Girlfriend 12" that labels IIWYG an extended version when it should be on Shockadelica?

I might ask what the story behind " Shockadelica" was...

Or what was the first album to use "Prince and the Revolution" on its lable.

If someone tells me they like Prince, I always reply, "what, that skinny little motherfxxxer with the high voice". Basic test. If they don't recognise that lyric they can't be that big a fan. Although to be fair I have met very few genuine prince fans in person!

Depends on the pressing you have.

Either the original one or the french version that was released later...

So yes, you too can enjoy a tracked lovesexy CD.

The person I replied to was explicit about which recording s/he meant - the original. Hence my comment.

I know there are different versions.

I think there are some 'fundemental' Prince things that if a fan has a problem with I question

"Ohh oohh I didn't like the song Head, ooh oohhh the briefs, he should never wear makeup etc"

Why be a Prince fan if you have issues with these things

I consider myself to be a pretty big fan. I rode around town on my bicycle when I was 14-15 searching all the record stores for the old 45 records so I could collect all the B-Sides. I own every cd and cd single (plus countless vinyl and cassettes stored in the garage), uptown and contorversy magazines, have real cd's of The Family, Jill Jones, Mazarati, NPG Goldnigga, everything that was on Paisley Park. Piles of bootleg cds. Books. Went to Lovesexy Tour, Act 2 tour, was in the audience for the 1993 Arsenio Hall show. Paid full price for Crystal Ball thru his website, Paid for and never received "Beautiful Strange" VHS, Paid for and never recieved "MPLS" CD single, Hit-n-run tour CD singles, All the NPGMC downloads.

That said, I'm not a fan of the heels, makeup, briefs, assless pants on MTV, the current fro... etc.

Loved the 1999/purple rain era clothing, SOTT era style was good, Lovesexy tour style was good, some of the more crazy, more efeminant stuff I'm just not a fan of. Fortunately, Im more into the music than anything else.

My point being, just cuz someone is not a fan of the heels, briefs, makeup type stuff, doesn't mean they are not a fan or a "real fan".

...And I have no idea what "Metallic Gigolo" is refering to. NPG's "Goldnigga"? thats a stretch, and wouldn't be my interpretation. Just a guess of what some botched translation might have been refering to.
