I only have Purple Rain on vinyl boxed But as soon as it warms up and the flea markets open up, I'm on a mission! lol Yea, I could get them off ebay but I want that feel of looking through a bunch of records and finding them.. close as I'll get to a wrecka stow..

Good luck on that,

about 10 years ago, I actually found a Purple Rain LP with the poster still brand new inside.

That was at a yard sale. Other than that, I never find Prince records at yard sales.

I've never tried the flea market. It is so fun looking through the stacks of records

and finding your treasure......

I have about 40-50 Prince vinyls, which is pretty impressive as I don't really collect vinyl. If we're talking CD's though.... I got about 150-200 of those! If you count albums, singles, international editions, and promo's.

I'd say my favorites are the Japanese editions of "The Scandalous Sex Suite" and "Space", as they have the additional tracks not on the other releases. And I just like OBI strips, lol.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but ATWIAD and Parade were NOT band oriented records. Prince played everything on those records unless it's notated otherwise. In the case of 'Pop Life', Sheila E. was on drums and Wendy and Lisa on the background vocals. At best, the band may have influenced the sound, but it was NOT a band effort. If you want a total band effort that also ended up being a beautiful swan song for the Revolution, check out 'Power Fantastic'. Also 'Jack You Off' is another good band cut. Of course the live tracks from Purple Rain serve as good examples too.

yep, I have tons of statements and quotes by people in the band. I have a Chicago Radio interview with Wendy & Lisa from a few years ago where they talked about that whole production

We all need to remember that what it says on the label or in the official record is not the same as what really happened. Even the people that really did compose it may not really know who came up with what. When they are working on a song all sorts of things come out of people. what happens is sometimes people get or take credit they do not deserve and some do not get credit for something they did do.

Right, and this is especially true with Prince who would give writing credits to people to insure they had an income (his dad for instance), which is generous but confusing.

At the time I thought it was an odd choice. "Pop Life" wasn't a song I had given much attention to. I expected "Paisley Park" -- that song was played on my local station when the album came out, and before the Raspberry Beret single. I thought it was the most commercial track by far.

I still think it would have been a smash had it been released after Raspberry Beret, with a really cool, colorful video...

But anyway,yeah I have come to love Pop Life and it indeed was a great single.

I totally agree, that album could have been much bigger. There were so many visual aspects, based on the color of the music and the artwork, that could have been used to make some great videos, just like Raspberry Beret. Paisley Park, Pop Life, America for sure - maybe The Ladder could have worked as a mini-Purple Rain type ballad.

Yeah, I think, with so many "final" versions of Computer Blue, Prince was way too focused and intent on making it perfect that he is unlikely to have entertained any input from the rest, but I could be wrong.

the whole band in studio were on that one. I'll post the pieces where Dr fink talks about it.

It wouldn't be on a track they felt they were much more instrumental in helping with but then would appear on another. Do you have something from W&L stating the opposite? I could be wrong but I haven't seen anything different.

Yeah I agree about that, but Computer Blue they did. I have a 'Chicago' Sound Bite? radio interview where they talk about it. Lisa talks about her part in Take Me With U, that Darling Nikki is ALL Prince and she talks about that wildness that he would put out on certain songs like Tamborine, she talks about how she and Wendy came up with the 'Wendy, Yes Lisa...' conversation. And the other 'female computer part' The open guitar solo on Computer Blue is Wendy Melvoin. Prince of course did the the lyrics(even though it's not much, I think the song is developed around the 'Hallway Speech' he created. I'll have the transcript of the Radio interview somewhere, here is a piece by Fink

FINK: Well “Computer Blue” really grew from a seed, so to speak, that took place during a jam session.

We’d always warm up before rehearsals doing free-form improv rock/jazz music jams, 
and someone would start a chord progression (or Prince would or one of us would) or in this case on that day, 
I started playing that main bass groove which was the main bass part for “Computer Blue” which was later brought into that. 
So the band started grooving on it, next thing you know we’re all sort of joining in, doing some jam on that. 
Prince started coming up with some stuff we recorded a rough version of it and he took it into the studio and just incorporated it all 
and made it fly that way. Lisa & Wendy came in and they did some of the stuff on it. Prince borrowed the bridge/portal section from his own father 
who had given him some music over the years to play around with. So that particular song was a real mixture of different people and influences. 
So that’s how that one came about. So I kind of germinated the beginning of it—the bassline, the main groove, Bobby Z. was there to play the drums, of course—
and that’s how it evolved.

as his Father's -- the song he played on the piano the night before.
But it's Prince's now, stamped with his own signature.
He's bent at the waist, his back to the audience, alone with his
father's, and his, pain.

Father's Song is an unreleased song recorded on 29 October, 1983 at Prince's Kiowa Trail Home Studio, Chanhassen, MN, USA. It was included as the ninth track on a 7 November, 1983 configuration of Purple Rain. The song appears in the Purple Rain movie, where Prince's character "The Kid" plays the song on piano after discovering his father's sheet music for the song. Computer Blue:The song was composed by Prince & the Revolution, with credit to his father, John L. Nelson for the guitar solo based on an untitled piano piece by Nelson. Prince titled the piece "Father's Song" and recorded it on piano for the film, though on screen it was portrayed as being played by Prince's on-screen father, actor Clarence Williams III.
