It does not matter to us the music buying public but radio spends a lot of money on market research and they care about the youth because they do buy the most music and products. Radio stations make their money from ads and the advertisers want people to buy stuff. This is what ultimately makes a radio station decided on their format and what age group they are trying to reach.

I think P looks great for his age and has a good mind for young pop music but just like other older artist he is not getting radio play. He would probably be better off working as a producer or songwriter.

disbelief

I disagree! What about Pharrell? He is considered old in his 40's. But looks young and he still has the number one song played EVERY hour. Jay- Z if reports are right, he is closing in on 50 and still has top 10 hits & radio play. It can be done! Prince just isn't signed to a major long term contract. That is the only difference. R Kelly is another one. He has a hit with Lady Gaga.

----- Pharrel is just now becoming known as a performing artist he was mainly a producer before so the young music buying public is not as familiar with him plus he does not look anywhere near 40. Prince has been around a long time everybody knows he is in his 50s. Just like Bruce Springsteen, Maddonna and U2. All artist who can sell out socceer stadiums but have watched their sales go down due to lack of radio play. The Jay-Z's and R-Kelly's are the exception and R Kelly is only making it on black radio which is not as hard on older performers like pop radio. Everything I am saying about radio, advertisers and demograhics is true and yes it would help if P would just sign a deal for a few CDs because the record company would have more incentitive to push his music at radio but from what I can EPIC is putting forth a decent effort. He could get off his butt and get on some T.V. show and do some interviews. He is actually acting like he could careless and maybe he does not care that much.

Prince could have another hit single but he's not going to. And the older he gets the harder it will be. Madonna did all she could for "Gimme All Your Luvin'" (adding hot rappers, performing it on the Superbowl) and she could only get it to #10 on Billboard (during a VERY brief chart run).

Plus Prince makes huge marketing blunders; Santana and Cher had those fluke hits in '99 because they made accessible-at-the-time records and promoted the hell out of them. Prince performs "Fallinluv2nite" for 25 million people on New Girl...then releases "Pretzelbodylogic" to iTunes. He performs "Funk'n'Roll" on Arsenio...then releases "Fallinluv2nite". There's still no release date for PlectrumElectrum, which probably won't even contain the current single anyway. He's promoting things he's not releasing and releasing things he's not promoting. His brand has almost zero commercial recognition with younger pop fans so he can't coast off that 1985 mystique and hope it generates hype. Only we care anymore, since we're the only ones willing to jump through Prince's same old hoops.

If he really wanted a big pop hit in 2014, he's doing it the wrong way (hence why "Fallinluv2nite" is nowhere on the charts and losing momentum fast). I would LOVE for him to prove me wrong, but 20 years without a top ten single is a pretty solid indicator those days are over and done.

Exactly, and he won't get a hit record this way. He's reportedly getting ready to release a rock album with 3rdEyeGirl,but his new single (which won't even be on the new album) is dance/pop.The general public can't keep up with those games he plays.

It's even worse than that...the general public in 1995 couldn't keep up with the games he played; the general public in 2014 doesn't care if he's playing them at all.

Don't know why I'm getting into this, but I can't resist this one time...

How am I "hating" or not being a "real fan"? The facts, no matter what gibberish you spout, are that "Fallinluv2nite" hasn't cracked the Billboard Hot 100 or R&B or Bubbling Under or airplay charts AT ALL, and since the song has vanished from iTunes' Top 200 it doesn't look good for the song to make the charts at this point. Prince hasn't scored a top ten on the Hot 100 since TMBGITW in 1994. He hasn't charted on the Hot 100 at all since "Black Sweat" spent one week on the charts at number 60 in 2006. Those are numbers you can't argue with. They're just true.

Of course none of that has anything at all to do with enjoyment of the song. There's no "hating" whatsoever; I think it's a fun little pop number and as a chart watcher (every week since 1990) I wish it was "steady climbing up the charts". But it's not. That's an indisputable FACT. And this thread is about the song's chart updates, which is what I was discussing in very detailed fact. I don't know what I'm talking about? You look foolish my friend, post all the eyeroll emoticons you want.

I heard it on the radio this week. I think it was on the ryan seacrest show in the afternoon. I don't recall him saying anything about "new song by Prince" or anything....I was at work and boom it was on. I haven't heard a prince song (at least a new one) on the radio in 20 years. It was nice!

---I am a real fan and I like this song I also know how radio works. Maybe if signs a long term deal things will improve I also wish people on this board would realize that he has not had the big pop hit because he was independent. He may have put more money in his pocket then people who had deals 20 years ago and we know most of those artist are no longer around.

Prince is too old to still use photos of himself staring at you like he's going to eat you up. The cover art and the "princetagram" doesn't appeal to the young masses. And his old fanbase doesn't buy singles. They buy albums. There's many reasons why this song won't be a hit. I actually think that if it was mixed differently with a bit more edge to it, less glossy. It could have atleast with a good video to it have managed to reach a top 10.

ok i think we can say this won't be a hit any time soon.

i do think it was an experiment of sorts to see how a major could fairly quickly release a one-off song with very little promo (new girl and some web ads/radio play/no video) and see how it would do.
in that respect it has been a success as it's done better than a lot of his recent singles.

I think it was a no-lose for prince really as it's not tied to any new album, and he could test the waters. also i think it's a bit of a stop gap, while he deals with stuff behind the scenes: NPG publishing, new record deals etc. and it's also not 'produced' by him so he may feel it is disposable compared to Breakdown or Wow for instance.

In a lot of ways, the charts have never changed...we may remember periods of time where the quality of songs may have been better but in the end, what you have with most mainstream radio is the same 20 songs literally being played over and over and over. My 8 year old daughter heard Dark Horse on the radio and she said, "Didn't they just play that song. I like it but I'm getting sick of it." And that is pop music in a nutshell, playing the same songs over and over until you get sick of them and then there is a new batch at the ready. In the first few days when Fallinlove2nite came out, it was exciting to see radio stations adding the song next to the new songs by B.O.B. and Neon Trees and other artists that are half of Prince's age. As a chart watcher, this is cool. But being ranked on the charts and the quality of a song are often mutually exclusive. I actually like Dark Horse and several other songs in the charts but I can't belive that someone could just have a stupid girl talk and put a house beat behind it and create a hit out of #Selfie. Then again, almost 30 years ago Rock Me Amadeus was huge so it's not like there has not always be a large segment of pop radio that's crap.
