The Prince/Tyson syndrome!

Now this might seem like a strange thread title but i'll try and make sense of it.

What I mean by it is to do with recapturing former glory

I am both a music fan and a huge boxing fan,in fact when I grew up both things were very important to me and still are-I'm a musician/producer for my living who loves putting on the gloves at times

It occured to me that the way I feel about Prince now kinda echoes the way I felt about Mike Tyson which is that even tho when both were past their prime (and for Prince I mean that purely for recorded material) I always believed there was one last punch or one last great album-one last recapturing that former glory that would turn back time and shine like the person of old.

I think this is the reason (for me anyway) that I tend to be harsh on new Prince material, simply for the fact that once you know what was once possible, you want time to rewind and it to happen again

It probably is just a romantic notion and we will never see another lp like sign of the times, parade or purple rain. But I guess that's ok-it's just the getting used to it.

I also think with age comes the decision that you just want to make music that you like and makes you happy rather than trying to be cutting edge or setting trends-I know because I'm going through the same thing

So I guess it's finally time to say goodbye to the Prince of old and accept it.......

But just maybe....!!!wink

Is this just to see how many different ways this tired idea of old Prince vs. new Prince can be rehashed? Do you constantly compare yourself to who you were in the 80s?

"So fierce U look 2night, the brightest star pales 2 Ur sex..."

I think it's only natural to compare yourelf or anyone else to times that you relate to be good times or that have a big influence on you no?

I agree but I think Prince is an exception because he has never "settled". He is always evolving so it's not like PR Prince is the only Prince he would have to compare himself to. kwim? I guess you can, but it is obvious he doesn't by the answer he gave Arsenio when asked what his favorite song was and he said it was The Breakdown, which they just wrote.

They didn't "just write" The Breakdown. Prince mentioned it because he knows fans are still going nuts over it over a full year after it was first leaked. He was teasing us, just like he did when he mentioned "The Grand Progression" in "F.U.N.K", almost 20 years after he wrote it and it still remains unreleased.

The song is at least 15 months old at this point, if not more.

15 months in relation to 30 years is ...well...pretty damn recent.

It's all relative. But you know damn well he's written about 5 more albums since then. lol

If it weren't for the fact that all of us have been talking non-stop about "The Breakdown" since it first leaked in January 2013, he wouldn't have mentioned it on TV. I mean, we've pretty much had a new thread about it every week!

I tell you something though - when I saw 3EG in Vegas in April 2013, and they opened with it, it was positively enchanting. I already knew the song from the Dakota boots, of course, but hearing it live was just utterly captivating. It's just such an amazing song.

neutral "Just wrote" were his words, not mine.. and 15 months is a new song, especially if it's not complete.
