Fallinlove2nite....U Got the Look for the 2000s

I am personally digging the song because for the first time in a while Prince has recorded something with a definite pop hook. You might not like the hook or the song but it will catch in the ears and heads of even those who are not Prince fans. There are quite a few radio stations giving it a spin, at least according to some unscientific snooping I did by googling the song title. One radio station had a poll where 87% of the listeners liked the song. Not 87% of Prince fans but 87% of listeners. A lot of people who have heard it seem to like it. Weirdly, it reminds me of U Got the Look, which it sounds nothing like but shares several common elements. Duet with a semi-famous celebrity, check. Repetition of the chorus a few dozen times, check. Camille voice, double check. For those of you who were not around or very young in 1987, U got the Look was played on the radio every five minutes. It was catchy, light, lyrics weren't rocket science but do they have to be in a great pop song? Anyway, if Fallnlove2night were one tenth as successful as U Got the Look that would be a nice little addendum to Prince's career. The man does not need any more hits but gosh wouldn't it be cool to hear him in heavy rotation again on the radio?

I personally love it.. the only complaint I have is that it kind of falls off at the end, like there should be something else there, but it's a good song. I want it to be a hit for him because I feel like that was his purpose for having Zooey on it. It hurts my feelings to think that he might possibly believe he can't put out a hit on his own anymore.. not that I know for sure that's what he's thinking and I certainly don't feel that way, but I don't want him to feel he needs a "big name" to get his music heard. neutral

I think Prince, if he was ever going to have another hit, was going to have to dumb it down a little for the radio. I know there are some of you who don't like the song but it does seem to be Prince making a song that could fit into a lot of radio formats and while at the same time, it's hard to imagine anyone else doing it. It is just strange enough but not too strange for a non-Prince fan to sing along to. It is his best attempt at a BEP "I Gotta Feeling" (which he really liked) type song. It's not rocket science, not overly deep, but a great pop song does not have to be. U Got the Look was probably the "dumbest" song on the brilliant "Sign O the Times". It's about sex and love but nothing particulary new is added to the subject. But dang if it wasn't catchy. Fallinlove2nite is the kind of hit that 80s and 90s Prince could have done in his sleep but 2010's Prince is a 55 year old man who is more respected than listened to by the masses. More power to the little guy in creating a pop hook that has big record company muscle behind it and possibly (cross fingers) radio stations willing to play something from a guy who is older than all the members of One Direction combined.

Well, yeah. I can see why you can compare the two.

However, U Got The Look built on other "rock with synthesizers" hit songs he had previously. "Let's Go Crazy" being probably the closest one stylistically. This new one, I wouldn't know what to compare it to exactly. "Sleep Around" comes to mind, but that was never even released as a single and the general public doesn't associate "EDM" with what Prince is about. So, I'm afraid quite a few people will think he's just selling out (or just doing what Cher did with "Believe"). Maybe all the horns and the quirkiness of the vocal parts make up for that somewhat in most people's minds, I wouldn't don't know for sure.

My math skills aren't the greatest but I'm pretty sure they are 103 altogether. lol (Google was employed, I definitely didn't know that information off the top of my head)

Otherwise, I agree.

Good point. Prince's overt club songs have been a mixed bag. I think the song is selling out in a way but I am actually okay with Prince selling out a little. Hell, it was a big deal to get Cher back in the radio back in 99, it be an even bigger deal if Prince as on their alongside Katy Perry and Justin Beiber. Does he have to be? No. Does he ever have to have another hit again? Not really. But Prince before he became a living legend was a radio staple and I personally count myself amongst the Prince fans who are okay with Prince trading in a little integrity for some airplay. He's got tons to spare in my book. If nothing else, it's more interesting to taalk about pop Prince versus artist Prince than it has been a lot of the other 3EG songs which, up to now, have only been slightly interesting to me.

It actually sounds like it could be an SAT question. What is the sum of three One Direction members minus Prince?

That really was great... A good remix would be interesting, but please not 20 different club versions, but a real extended mix...

Thanks to the OP, I am transferred back to being the 16 year old driving around with the radio on, with lots of Prince songs blasting out of the stereo - good God, was he omnipresent these days...

Those were the days - back in the summer of 87...

I know...to me that was awesome. There would be a genuine excitement when a new P song came out...DJs would be announncing it like an hour before. And they played the CRAP out of U Got the Look. What was also cool is that the video was a top requested video on MTV and would be in the Top 10 every day in the request show that pre-dated TRL.

It's a very apt comparison.
