The One is the ninth track on the New Power Generation's third and final 'solo' album Newpower Soul, and, two and a half months prior to the album's release, The One was available as a promotional single (no commercial release was available). Later in 1998, a remix of the track was included as the seventh and final track on the 1-800 New Funk direct-order version of Come On, the album's first and only commercially-released single.
While specific recording dates are now known, the album was recorded between May, 1997 and February, 1998, at Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA. On 20 February, 1998, Love4OneAnother.com announced that was deciding between Mad Sex, Newpower Soul and Push It Up as the first single, which could indicate that The One was recorded later in February, 1998, but this is speculative.
Orchestra recordings by Clare Fischer were recorded in Los Angeles, CA, USA at some point between mid-1997 and Spring 1998. Recording dates for the remix are not known, but it is likely that this was created in mid-1998 at Paisley Park Studios.

ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS The Artist/New Power Generation "New Power Soul"
There are a couple of nice jams ("Come On," "Mad Sex"), and a sweet buttery soul ballad ("The One"), but ultimately this "Soul" provides more fodder for those who believe the Artist to be in dire need of an editor, producer or someone to separate the weak from the dope.

MTV ONLINE The Artist Formerly Known As Prince/New Power Generation
New Power Soul, on the other hand, is by far the most consistent album the Artist has released since the much-maligned, streamlined Batman soundtrack. Thankfully, it's also far better than that effort: leaving the soundtrack's stripped-down tone behind, NPS is a full-blown funk jam, notably light on guitars and heavy on thickly-textured grooves.
The goose-bump-inducing ballads include an almost-saccharine-but-still-beautiful "The One,"

The quote that starts this thread is from a pretty negative review of the New Power Soul CD in Q magazine and I must say that "muzak ballad" is a pretty good description of this song. Still, when he opened with this in Brussels 1998, that was the start of a very good concert. I also like how P squeezed this and The Question of U into 1 song for later concerts.

The studio version of this song, is kinda meh. Not bad, not great (although the video is fun).
Live, however, this song kicks ass, especially when he really screams the emotional parts. No confusion, no tears. No enemies, no fear. No sorrow, no pain. No ball, no chain.

For some reason I compare it 2 Adore because of the type of 'giving' he's talking about and the lyrics sorta fail for me, but I do like the music. Especially Clare Fischers strings

The lyrics just remind me of a lot of 1990s RnB songs about "I'll Do What Your Man Won't Do..." themes It felt below a Prince standard. Adore, Scandelous, Condition of the Heart, even some nice pieces from the Truth. The beauty of the video and the music overshadows the lyrics idk

It's simplicity. It's just straight talk because you don't want to always have to figure it out. And shoutout to Joe. What?

I don't mind simplicity. I don't know, something lack luster about the lyrics, cool song though, the music definately makes up for it 4 me.
Tangerine is a very simply lyric song and I LOVE it, but it feels like Prince. idk, it's just me

When I say simple, I don't mean there is no depth layers or symbolism. I'm a Prince fan remember ? lol We learn the language. In comparison 2 Condition of the Heart the Beautiful Ones Adore, Tangerine is "simpler" but in comparison to the One, complex. I guess I don't feel poetry in the One. I'm not saying I don't like it, obviously I do. I guess it's a matter of flow for me
.

Deep. I can 't figure out the one where the Mom says she's dying of thirst. Is it "opposite of people" and "in hell(o)" on there or something... What?
