I'm quite sure he was well aware of that. I think it was a brilliant move, at that time. Nobody could pull this off like Prince did, and be an amazing musician at the same time.

Prince back then was simply fucking with your brain on all levels; you'd still be trying to figure out whether the person you're looking at is actually male or female while he would already strike you with a mind-boggling chord-progression followed by a completely weird lyrics.

I remember listening to his shit, the looking at the album cover or picture, listening again, looking back at the pic/album cover, and always thinking "who the hell is the motherfucker?" And then when I would go back and read the "produced, arranged, etc." in the credits to make sure I read it right, knowing that I had, then just sit back and just let it fuck with me. Dirty Mind really solidified the mind fuck for me with Prince.

I can tell you that the army of young teen black girls did not find anything gay about this pic. That was his audience back then and he knew exactly what he was doing. If you go back to the 70s and look at Tiger Beat all of the white teen idols had flouncy hair and were standing around in with their shirts off.
