Best! Lisa her creamy backing vocals on Prince's earlier 80's songs complimented Prince so much. Also; Her live haunting keyboard playing, was the icing on the cake to Prince's signature intricate keyboard style. Its what made her my all time favorite keyboard player of his. Hello POWER FANTASTIC!!!!!

Lisa Coleman is an American Emmy Award winning musician and composer. Coleman plays piano and keyboards. She was a member of Prince's backing band The Revolution from 1980 to 1986.

Hey Lisa! Is the water warm enough???

Useless NONE! Everyone played a part in his bands that made the stars collide for Prince's still highly successful career. NO ONE is useless in their life! God created them 4 a reason.....

No one said useless in life. Useless in princes band was the topic.

I'm not useless in life...but as a designer at the house of Versace... I would be UTTERLY useless.

Probably not. Prince was already a Rufus fan before he met Susannah.

Clare Fisher, talk about a muse. He was my inspiration for getting the strings on the (first) record. Clare had done work with my father —my father being the arranger and Clare being the string arranger. So, I had that “in,” although, that was not how I was thinking about it at the time.

Prince and I were listening to a bunch of Rufus records back in the day-- and this was before we thought about doing strings on the first record. We were talking about how brilliant the strings were on those albums. I had also been listening to a lot of Claus Ogerman and Bill Evans. There's one record they did called Symbiosis and it's just one of the most beautifully arranged records. Ogerman's string arrangement, and Evans playing the piano over it, is some of the most beautiful music I have ever heard.
The only thing that's ever came close to feeling as perfectly arranged in terms of the strings was on the Ruficized record. I just said, “Prince, why don't we get Clare to do the strings on our record?” He said, “Yeah.” I said, “My dad knows him.” I called my dad and said “Pop, you gotta call Clare and see if he's up for it.” He was.

Why do people need to mention her looks when they discuss how they don't like her role in the band?

If she hadn't chosen to shave her head would people comment? sad

you know I luv u chocolate wink but I have never been a shelby fan. im black so looks and color have nothing to do with my opinion of her. what i hate is the over the top vocals and costumes. I have always disliked that her performance distracts away from Prince. if i pay to see Prince then that's just who I wanna see. actually in the beginning I liked her. hell she sung the hell out of misty blue, but she just became too much to take.

I don't get the hate towards ShelbyJ that some are displaying here. It's not as though she did some terrible thing to anyone here, that they have to display that kind of hate, just because she is a member of Prince's band, in which he was the one that hired her/and they're friends. I just wonder how some here would feel with someone projecting that kind of ugly hate towards a female family member, a daughter, sister or mother, and happen to be a member of Prince's band. Thing is he controls the band, and apparently how she sings and displays her performance on stage with him, obviously seems to be okay with him or I doubt she'd be here. I say that because of many of his former band associates who have said he is a perfectionist when it comes to how his band members perform. I guess I just don't get it. shrug

Wasn't necessarily pointing you out nursev, it's quite a few who have expressed questionable hate towards someone they don't even know. I just find that as sad as someone disliking someone because of their weight, looks, hair, etc., and not knowing the individual on a personal basis.

I don't know shelby and really don't care to know her. my concern is her performance doesn't enhance Prince's performance. shes a performer so if she can't take criticism and improve that's a whole other thread. I choose who I spend my money on and I choose not to hear that loud kinda performance. some may like it, but I don't.

Yes nursev, you're right that it is your choice, your dollars too. I actually never said she couldn't take criticism since I don't know her personally, but I think if she couldn't take it, she wouldn't continue performing, and she seems very confident on stage as a performer, from what I've seen from her performance on stage. I like that she keeps going no matter what though, despite some ill words towards her from some Prince fans. When I met her after the City Winery show for a minute, she was very humble and displayed a warm embrace, not saying that means I know her as an individual, on a personal basis though. I do get that every person is not going to like the music styles of every artist, as you've expressed, but I guess I just don't get the unnecessary hate/namecalling that has nothing to do with her talent as an artist, displayed here from some Prince fans, and like I said, wasn't singling you out. It's all good though, I guess it is, what it is. smile

I just didn't understand what her looks had to do with not liking her on stage. She is constantly under attack. Someone recently said some really ugly things about her on a thread that wasn't even about her.

People hate Tony M, but they don't call him ugly or equate his looks to animals or aliens. They just clown his rapping.

Shelby's live duet with Prince of "Nothing Compares 2 U" is the best Eye've ever heard of that song! Also Elisa's solo in the remake of the last live per4mance of "The Sweeter She is" in Connecticut was AMAZING!!In fact all of them KILLED it. It was a spiritual per4mance and Prince got the "holy ghost". They just get better & better 2 me 2gether. Shelby isn't up front as much as she use 2 b. But Prince loves her & she makes him happy.. So its all good to me.....People just have a problem sharing Prince with other band members. Everybody has their role in that band.

Its reminiscent of the James Brown Revue, Plus i c what he is trying to do with the NPG. Eye TOTALLY get it!!!!

I had to think about this one... hmmm

I've been one of the main people who had no use for Andy in the NPG.
Then I went to see her in NYC. I really enjoyed her show. She showed us what she can really do.

After seeing her perform on her own, it became clear to me that she WAS useless in the NPG. Her role in the band was "standing there dressed like Prince looking cute holding a guitar."

I don't know on what alternate universe the NPG are even half as good as James Brown's Revue, but that must be the planet Shelby came from...let's also not discount her for some other talents...like Dual flag bearer during live shows! Without her, who carries the flag? Exactly.

Most useless? Tony M? Hell no! Mr Mosley the Deacon has to be Prince's finest and most appropriate artistic collaborator. To me, the Tony M/ Gameboyz era was the ZENITH and P really lost his way when Tony left. I mean, just imagine boring instrumental music like NEWS, C-NOTE and Xpectation, as well as dull stuff like most of his last 10 years worth of material made MUCH more cool and interesting by putting Tony on the mike all over those suckaz!

Word, if I were P, I'd bring Tony back to the NPG (WITH his brothas the Gameboyz of course, goes without sayin') TODAY! In fact, I wouldn't release remastered versions of the 80s albums until those records were improved by putting cool new overdubs and philosophisin' from Tony on those platters. IMAGINE Dorothy Parker, When Doves Cry, Sometimes It Snows in April or Sign o' the Times improved 100 x by having Tony layin' down the word about HIS experience in the hood and beyond.

Hell, MC Hammer must've got SCARED when he saw the Gameboyz at top of their game back in the day. cool

2Gether NEEDED those 'Huh's' at the end of every line, cuz without it Tony and P knew it wouldn't speak to the streets.

Bring back Tony, Prince, you know he's the Lennon to your McCartney cool wink

One reason I'm going to back you on Tony M was because he felt Prince was too white, He told some band member in his time that he was going make Prince 'blacker' "I'm going to shove black down that _ throat" He didn't accept Prince 4 who he was.

.

Prince is Prince, and it's his rainbow that makes him who he is. Superstars go beyond that limitation.

spit falloff I bet he did and I bet Prince loved it too. I sensed that all along from day one. I knew there was a good reason for Prince keeping him around.

Andy is a four letter word.
