Is it wrong to listen to other great artists & get really p'd off at Prince!

i can't stop listening to David Bowies album + remix album, likewise Boy Georges album & many others. I adore Prince, will b 1st in the queue for London tix etc BUT when I listen to other artists i get pissed off. Where others are writing great lyrics that actually mean something we get Pretzlebodylogic!, where others produce great albums with tracks that compare to their best work we get throwaways that will get 2 or 3 listens & then be put away.

Can't help feeling that I am being so unfair to P after all the endless albums / tours & frankly endless great memories BUT damn I wish he'd just deliver 1 fuckin' great album - a keeper - a classic-one with credibilty, artful packaging etc.

Does anyone else feel like this...or should I just STFU & be gratefu & accept that he has earned the right to do what he wants when he wants!!!

yeah, i hear you smile but we have to keep in mind that a lot of those other great artists

often haven't released an album -or a good album- in a long time. and then all of a

sudden they emerge again with a great artistic statement. prince just keeps releasing

stuff all the time (rather less in the last 3 years, but still).

/

i also have this hunch that prince probably already recorded 1 or 2 albums that will

serve him just fine as those 'late carreer highlights' that other artists have released

over the years.

/

the thing is, prince probably doesn't feel like he's about to dwindle to a stop and just

keeps on going on, having fun (at least it seems like he's having fun) and doing stuff

in the moment.

/

granted, many people don't like that stuff lol but i'm sure that if he really wanted to

he could release one or two more absolutely astonishing albums. he just seems way

too distracted from that the last few years, running around helping others and getting

fresh input from all over the place, concentrating more on THEM than HIM.

/

who knows what he might come up with once he shuts himself away in the studio all

by himself again after he's grown tired of all these folks hanging around now. but i'm

sure he's got some tunes filed away the last 10 years or so for that last great album.

and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

If he would release 1 fucking great album, in a few years you´ll be asking again for just 1 fucking great album...

I get the point about other older artists writing great lyrics and Prince putting out a song titled "Pretzelbodylogic" lol ...

... but there's a song titled "Atomica" on the special edition of Bowie's "The Next Day" album. The lyrics are completely silly, if you ask me.

I don't really get "p'd off" at Prince, because I realized when Lotusflow3r came out that it's about as good an album as he's able to pull off as an older artist. Not because he wouldn't be able to write good songs anymore, or come up with creative arrangements and great guitar parts, but because he's just lost his ability to stay as focused on his projects as he once was. Maybe if he just released the best ones from the new songs and then rerecord some outtakes from the 80s / 90s he could still make a "great album" (not sure if that would function as an "artistic statement" though).

I'm sorry but u're 2 late: Tittypants has already created the "Prince is over and done" thread for this week: http://prince.org/msg/7/404746

Please ask a mod to delete your thread and start it again on Maonday morning. We can't have more than one a week, it looks messy.

Proving that more is less, especially since there really are no gems amongst that vast output. People have been saying for years, nay decades that Prince needs an editor and his output of the past 15+ years is proof of that.

He hasn't done a single thing WRT other artists that is impressive or worthwhile.

It's strange joining a Prince forum and just get all of this negativity....but Really "Lotus Flower" is a classic so is "The Rainbow Children" and the singles that have been released over the last couple of years were pretty good to decent. I wonder if you go to a Springteen or a U2 forum you get negative feedback on their work? Probbly not

As someone wrote above, it really IS good to take a break from Prince now and then. Step back, then re-visit every few years and see what's out there. It's just that we're so afraid of missing something that we pay attention 24/7.

.

Normal artists' music does not become unavailable at the rate that Prince's music does.

.

Note: this is not about the quality of Prince's music. That's up to the individual to decide for themself. This is about how fans are treated, how and music is presented/promoted/distributed/etc.

Yes. It's wrong, ludicrous and somewhat deranged. Can't you just enjoy the music of any artist you like? There's no need to compare them at all, let alone get angry about a perception that one is not as good as another (whatever that means and however you are quantifying it).

You must be a nightmare at Christmas and birthdays! Woe betide anyone who gets you a present you don't like. "I know you bought me loads of great gifts over the years, but this one is shit - just look at all the much better stuff all these other people bought me"

This place is so horrid with all the complaining. It would trick any new fan into think all of Princes music is garbage except for a handful of his mid 80s albums. Seriously, get out of pop and the 80s.

i do agree & that's why I stayed away for a while..it can be a negative place BUT all opinions are valid! I also think that many share my sheer frustration that a genuine genius chooses to put out average at best tracks.

I no longer get p'd off at Prince's music output, as I rarely listen to it.

What DOES pee me off though is his live shows. mad

For ONCE I ask that he play all his songs IN FULL instead of these f***ing melodies throughout the shows.

Even if it means listening to 20 songs instead of 40!!!

Watching other bands play, really makes me appreciate listening to a whole song when done live.

Im sick of all the razzamatazz and Las Vegas shit we get nowaday.

And also........ change the farken setlist!!!!

mad

Hopefully the 3rd Eye Girl shows changes all that.

The validity of opinions around here is questionable at best. If you're going to compare everything and everyone to Prince then people will write off your opinions as complaining.

The frustrating part is that he does have another career album or two in him, but that would involve too much compromise on his part. A producer, giving a record label some control over distribution and licensing, collaborating with older and more established artists rather than the younger ones he flirts with. I don't hate him for it. As a new fan, I like quite a bit of Prince's latest releases so by no means see them as a failure.

BUT, when you see the likes of David Bowie, David Byrne, Paul McCartney, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Diamond, Tom Waits, Nine Inch Nails releasing work that not only is commercially applauded but getting outstanding critical reception too, you can't help it wonder what could be. It pains me to say this, but if even Santana was able to enjoy renewed success in the late 1990s and early to mid 2000s with the releases of then, for Prince it should be a cakewalk. I'm not saying Santana deserved the acclaim he got, but imagine the storm Prince could bring to the industry with a bit more of a give and take approach to his recording.

Ditto.

It can prevent a lot of people from even checking out stuff, or already have an implanted idea that something is terrible.

A lot of us dont even come from a pop background. I certainly didnt, so a lot of other aspects in Princes catalogue are appealing.

The way so many fans are obssessed about Prince making another hit and being played on the radio again, while I don't see what difference it could make in THEIR lives, says either how much they've been brainwashed by the media about good music being successful music and successful music being good music, or how much they're craving social recognition from their peers, having them admitting how cool they are because their favorite artist is successful rolleyes

This is pathetic. I don't give a damn whether the music I listen to is popular or not. If I dig it I dig it and if it's gonna be my little private joy because only a happy few know such band/artist/album, then so be it. What difference could it make in my life if Prince was #1 in the top 100 again? Well... none rolleyes
