nod...yet Screwdriver's lyrics have been described as sounding as if a "12 year old boy wrote them" while Peach's lyrics are not. There is nothing BUT "12 year old boy" lyrics in Peach lol...

But that's the thing: when it comes to rock & roll, "12 year old boy" lyrics are often a good thing, and has been throughout rock's history. Prince gets that. Simple songwriting is often a good thing, too. Anyone think Satisfaction by the Rolling Stones is complex, innovative songwriting? Anyone think the lyrics to Satisfaction are anything except the epitome of "basic"? Anyone think the song needs to be more than that? Not me.

*disclaimer for the logic-challenged: nowhere in my post did I claim Screwdriver is as good as Satisfaction, so don't embarrass yourselves by trying to claim I did lol. Thank yew.

I think there's a difference between immature and "animal" (though those two can overlap a bit) and that's the distinction between a) Satisfaction, Peach, and b) Screwdriver

There's nothing "animal" about "I was sure when her titties bounced" lol...Hell, there's nothing "animal" about the lyrics "I can't get no...no, no, no...hey, hey, hey...that's what I say." You might be thinking delivery moreso than lyrics. Besides, Screwdriver isn't about sex so there's no need to be "animal".

And outside of "I'm your driver, you're my screw", what's immature about the lyrics to Screwdriver?

well, you say "basic" I say "animal." True, those songs are not wordless grunts, but they are about basic animal desires.

And the immaturity of Screwdriver isn'tso much in the sentiment, it's in the execution. I don't really think the lyrics really fit together, and they're not terribly clever or interesting.

So I think they're all a bit immature, but in different ways

Ah, ok, so you mean "immature" as in "under-developed", so to speak...I can see that.

And yeah, Screwdriver isn't about animal desires so it wouldn't have any real reason to sound "animal". I always thought Screwdriver was about his relationship with his fans, to be honest.

Yes, exactly.

Actually, I was just thinking that second point. Screwdriver seems to be about a relationship in the beginning, then about playing shows, which seems disconnected. But maybe it's not. I have thought his love songs have been metaphors for his career before, such as Diamonds & Pearls

I don't think u get what makes a song great .. so you are a perfect fan for prince since neither does he anymore.

When Prince sings .. she's a peach .. you know exactly what he means ... and it's good .. all good .. she was pure ..every ounce .. i was sure .. when her titties bounced .. CLASSIC PERFECT LYRICS

When Prince screaches like nails on a chalkboard .. i'm your driver your my screw .. not only do listeners of good music want to stab their ears with a pencil .. but the words make no sense .. sound stupid and shrill .. but there is absolutely nothing about the song that makes anyone want to figure out what his stupid lyrics even mean.

Anyone who cannot hear the difference should be banned from speaking about music ever. You have NO TASTE at all. No ability to discuss music on even a basic lowest common denominator level. Screwdriver is one of the worst things prince has ever done. There is nothing forgivable about this song. It is blasphemy in the sphere of prince ability.

Prince needs to be locked up for abusing the drawing power of his name to cause ANYONE to listen to this utter SHIT of a song.

Defending Screwdriver is a deal breaker on credibiltiy. Next you will be telling me Jar Jar Binx is your favorite Star Wars character. Prince fans should know better. There are plenty of great prince songs for you to compare to this garbage and know that it is indeed garbage.

Ah, so let us all drink in the songwriting knowledge of Trevor so that we, too, may understand what good songwriting consists of:

When Prince sings .. she's a peach .. you know exactly what he means ... and it's good .. all good .. she was pure ..every ounce .. i was sure .. when her titties bounced .. CLASSIC PERFECT LYRICS

When Prince screaches like nails on a chalkboard .. i'm your driver your my screw .. not only do listeners of good music want to stab their ears with a pencil .. but the words make no sense .. sound stupid and shrill .. but there is absolutely nothing about the song that makes anyone want to figure out what his stupid lyrics even mean.

Ok, so...according to Trevor, good songwriting consists of liking how the person sings. That's it. Oh, and having lyrics so incredibly obvious that my dead grandmother would understand what he's singing about is the definition of "classic lyrics". Quick question to everyone: who here was confused when Prince sang "her hot pants can't hide her cheeks" or "When her titties bounced"? Nobody? Then it passes the test. Me? I personally think a grown-ass man talking about "bouncing titties" is embarassing. In my humble opinion, that is exactly what a 12 year old boy just entering puberty would write lol...along with his friends Beevis and Butthead giggling and saying "Heh heh...he said titties..."

By the way--and this is just for you, Trevor--that back and forth NDRU and I were having? It was about trying to figure out the meaning of Screwdriver's lyrics.

Is there a "Reading Comprehension For Dummies" book available? If so, I hope I get you for the next Org Secret Santa lol...cuz I know what I'm gonna get you. thumbs up!

For those of us who don't hyperventilate with excitement at the thought of being able to criticize Prince and those who don't do the same, we know I never said Screwdriver and Peach were equal in quality, enjoyment or delivery. But for you, I shall write this in bold magic marker: I was talking about the level of songwriting for each song...which you seem to arrogantly believe that your personal tastes is all that's needed to determine between good and bad songwriting. Most of the rest of us can analyze songwriting separate from our personal enjoyment of the song. We can talk about chord changes, note values, rhythmic ranges, lyric structures, etc, etc...even if we don't realize those are the terms to describe what we're talking about lol.

It takes no effort whatsoever to blurt out "He screeches like a monkey! Worst song of his career! If you don't agree you're an idiot!!"...which, I assume, is why you consistently do so. Takes no thought or knowledge, just an over-inflated opinion of yourself. The bonus of taking that type of stance is that it doesn't require you to actually comprehend what anyone else is saying (I'm definitely getting you that book! lol)

Prince needs to be locked up for abusing the drawing power of his name to cause ANYONE to listen to this utter SHIT of a song.

ok secret santa .. for my gift I would love one single new record by prince that does not suck .. aw shit guess I am not getting any gifts next year

songwriting

purple rain 10/10

peach 6/10

screwdriver -1,000,000/10

just saying

please wake up from your prince induced purple dung coma and stop defending prince most crappiest effort we call "Screwdriver" ..

ps .. prince changed "titties" to "bangs" in recent years .. still works .. still a great song .. screwdrive still blows fat hairy purple chunks

pps .. opinions are for people who don't know what the hell they are talking about .. i will stick to my facts thank you .. screwdrive sucks .. prince should be thrown in jail until he at very least stops ruining prince fans ears with this diarhea ..

now go listen to peach .. a song does not need to complex to work .. a song like "god" works way better than THE ENTIRE RAINBOW CHILLIN record .. get it? .. prolly not .. oh well

Prince has his faults but he's not lying with that statement. Yeah, you might find some real music by real musicians on a mainstream country/western station but who the hell wants to hear that shit. Just turn on R&B radio and all you'll hear is either shit hop or neo stool. Or maybe on the pop side of the fence somebody might sound a little "folksy" with an accoustical guitar or something but same applies as the country, who the hell wants to hear that shit? I want some ass shaking funk and there sure as hell been none of that on mainstream radio since the 1980s. As to whether or not, Prince will deliver it with his new project, we'll just have to wait and see. But as for his statement about music in general these days, he's telling the damn truth.....that is, unlelss you're looking for some boring real music by real musicians.

The hell with sugarcoating it honey. I'm a Prince fan so whether mainstream country, folk, or whatever mainstream genre may still have real music by real musicians, that doesn't concern me. If ain't some funk, it's some boring ass junk and that's the bottom line and just telling it like it T-I- Is.

Exactly. Not to mention there's the context: P refusing to play some of his best songs because his religious beliefs forbid it, yet here he returns to the old wink wink nudge nudge again -- except that it is imitation, it is him pretending. It simply sounds phony, because it is phony.

i've always been amused by the whole "real music by real musicians" given that:

1 - i hate all that muso nonsense, virtuosity for it's own sake is not interesting to me.

2 - my personal favourite Prince is the guy who threw away the standard 70s funk line up, replaced the horns with synths, and is arguably the best drum machine programmer ever.

Anyway - reality is not what it seems to be, nor is it otherwise! - as my old Granda' used to say....

If prince is a real musician and plays with real musicians .. how come they cant play prince songs the way they were intended .. I mean why cant they play THE DANCE ELECTRIC .. why does it turn into a pretty boring one note romp .. why was SOMETHING IN THE WATER a piano romp for so long .. why did renato have to put an elevator jazz solo in the middle of DELERIOUS .. why does prince need a SAMPLER to recreate his songs .. why cant his band of REAL MUSICIANS do it? ... pretty sure its cuz they are sucky ass musicians .. they probably have to practice 16 hours a day just to pull off bambi when a real musician could listen to the song once or twice and be able to play the full song just fine .. take a band like phish .. they cover a whole record for holloween every year and often cover tunes at their 4 hour concerts by listening to the record right before they go onstage to perform it .. yet 3eg plays the same 10 or so boring songs over and over and they still dont sound that good .. prince should have a band that can pull from any of his 10 classic records on a whim plus maybe a few of the later period gems .. they should be able to play them almost note for note and change up the setlist dramatically every night for each 3 hour show and do so with only prince songs and not cover songs .. this should not be hard to do if these are REAL MUSICIANS .. just look at that hack springsteen .. I cant stand his hallmark phoney sentimentality songwriting but at least his band can pull 4 hours a night .. mix up the set nightly and nail it .. prince band CANNOT HANG .. prince can only mix up the set if he does one of those lazy ass one chord romps where he chants the song name over a boring monotonous backdrop .. he should be able to pull out the full song in all its glory on a whim .. and kill it .. just consider his recent effort with ELECTRIC CHAIR .. omg .. not only did it not sound like the record .. it just sounded bad .. revamped into some jam with made up chords that did not really go with the song .. everyone says .. prince is so awesome he does a different version every time .. no .. its cuz he cant do it the right way .. he needs his sampler even tho he has a 28 piece band he cant manage to get it right

i totally agree.

I think the ''real music by real musicians!!!!!111'' is such a joke.

I mean there is indeed still loads of great music out there. also what is real music anyways? if he means music with real emotions and passion, then yes, i love that too. but that has nothing to with what instruments you use or anything like that.

he himself uses the sample set in shows.. what is that then?? lol. sorry but i never took it seriously, i always laughed inside when he says it. ''real music by real musicians!'' yep that's right.

Most of the big singles like Kiss, When Doves Cry etc etc etc (there' so many), plus a lot of favorites like Joy In Repetition, She's Always In My Hair etc..... all these are: 10/10

Peach is one of the very few weak songs on The Hits / B-sides...
No need to mention what Screwdriver is...

Let's make it simple: can 3EG play the Lovesexy concert? Hell to the no.

Can the lovesexy band play a 3EG gig? Yup, but they'd be bored to tears.

"When You Were Mine" from the Lovesexy gig is a kazillion times better than the combined output of 3EG, simple as that.

I don't quite think it's nonsense. It's one thing Prince rightly should be proud of, let's not take that away from him. I think having the right kind of balance is crucial in the music industry and we need people like Prince.

It's just that it sort of sucks Prince has to be that guy though, if you know what I mean. It could come off as a cocky statement and it certainly closes some potential collaborative opportunities for him. Not to mention that sort of mindset could also put a limit to his music as far as creativity is concerned...of course, it's just my opinion.
