Like many other fans, this is one of my all time favourite songs. I remember getting Charade on vinyl back in the late 80´s, and this along with Old Friends 4 Sale blew me away.

Where I work we have a pretty good sound system, and The Waterboys "Whole Of The Moon" is played on a regular basis. Although I know this song since the 80´s, it was only when listening to it loudly in the background (at work) that it occurred to me that it reminds me of "All My Dreams".

At first I assumed that Mike Scott from The Waterboys was influenced by Prince's "All My Dreams" when writing "Whole Of The Moon" but then after a bit of research realised this was impossible due to it being released in 1985. With that in mind the scenario is most likely the other way around. If you play the songs back to back there are similarities, in the arrangement, use of sound effects, the build up of the song, and the way the the final verses are delivered.

It has been suggested that the "Whole Of The Moon" was written about Prince and his rise to stardom. It is also a well known fact that Scott was a Prince fan back in the day, and The Waterboys often covered Purple Rain at their concerts.

If it were not for insanity, I would be sane.

Well, I am sure this is a coincidence but Prince covered "The Whole Of The Moon" last night at a small gig in London. Does anyone know if he has covered this before?

So does anyone know how All My Dreams sounds at double speed?

Yes...I have the "Charade" bootleg on vinyl. The music speeds up but Prince's voice sounds "normal". Fantastic song, criminal that it remains unreleased.

Make it so, Number One...
